No Man's Sky: Foundation Update (v1.1)

Is basebuilding in creative mode only or is it available in survival/regular modes too?

No idea about Survival mode as that's not my thing but in my normal mode continued save i can hire aliens in space stations to work in my base when i build certain terminals but i have no idea how to start a base as i haven't looked into it yet.

Looks good, great even. Ill definitely check it out. Regardless of what NMS failed to deliver, I still felt the game was a decent foundation for something that could grow and improve. Looks like they are taking the right steps. They won't be able to escape the fact that some people will never give the game another chance, but I'd like to see it grow.

This patch is a perfect example of why the game should have been early access at half the price or delayed all together. Not saying it resolves any of the underlying issues, but it is evidence that nms could have been alot more then what it ended up being had it been handled properly.

this update broke my game. So I loaded my old save on normal mode, and now I'm on a space station (in the original save file I was on the first planet of my second galaxy); after loading, I received a message saying that i was spawned in a different location because of changes in the algorithm. I thought ok. But no matter what I do, I can't take off with my ship. I recharged it with fuel, but it just doesn't take off. I also tried buying a different ship on the space station and nothing happens.

If instead I try to load a new save on creative mode, the game always crashes when I exit the atmosphere of my first planet. I already tried 3 times and it always crashes, only in creative mode, every time I try to exit the atmosphere. No error message or anything, it just returns to my desktop and my game closes by itself.

Out of desperation I tried survival mode, I ended up on a highly radioactive planet, with little resources, about 10 minutes from my ship, I never make in time, because I die before I can reach it (no resources to charge my exosuit during the trip from my fixed spawn point to the ship).

Do I have to delete all my saves and start again? I don't have any mods installed.

Furthermore the initial loading screen has nearly doubled in time (and it also stutters a lot more). I have to wait 5-6 minutes during the "loading shaders" screen, when instead before the update it was much shorter.

Now a question that I'm not sure can be answered yet. Will it continue to be hard to survive in survival as you get more and more upgrades? It would be nice if it kept getting hard and harder as you got closer to the core or whatever you're suppose to be heading toward.

Lol, just tried to play (PC) and it took like 5 minutes for it to load in (on the galaxy loading screen thing, just said "loading shaders" at the bottom" and the moment it loaded you could hear the suit booting up and then it just crashes. And on reboot it just crashes when it loads (though much quicker this time).

Removed my mods and it works fine except my ship was a nice white one and now it's red. It looks the same from what I remember except it's now red and not white :(

I'm surprised at the scope of the update, it's pretty big. But I'm also surprised at the direction - they are expanding the game on a tangent with base building, while not addressing the core exploration game. Really weird.

Still, I'm glad they're continuing to work on the game, and I'm assuming that means they'll get to addressing exploration and other issues. I'll keep watching.

They did start to touch on some of my main issues with the game, such as the UI, so that's promising.

Survival mode looks fantastic. This should have been in the game to begin with. I wouldn't advise anybody on the fence to jump in yet though. The sale price is probably tempting you but it will be on sale again in the future and they've still got a long way to go before this game is remotely what was promised in my opinion. It's definitely a step in the right direction.

Damn, Survival is no joke, scrambling to keep my life support and temperature protection is keeping me on my toes, and I haven't even reached my ship yet.

I'm currently hiding under an arch of aluminium, recharging my thermal shield for the 7 minute journey to my ship.

Well according to Sean Murray, they have been working on the base building and freighter stuff since before the game was released, so it might just be a situation where they decided to finish that and then move on to the core stuff as opposed to just scrapping it or putting that work on hold.

Oh god that tone of the tweet.. Holy shit. How about an apology to all those that you sold a pretty much broken game that was more a early access title than a full £50 release?

This should of been a £20 early access title from the start. It's good they are finally fixing their game but that tone LOL!

I hope they add a simulation mode that can be selected on top of whatever mode you're playing, where they put back the planet rotation. Biggest thing missing for me personally.

Getting death threats on the daily from tools that feel they overpaid $40 would emotionally impact anyone.

Of course death threats are way, way beyond a joke.

But most of the criticism was justified.

And some of these posts from members here are making me laugh just as much.

He stole millions of pounds from consumers. He doesn't deserve death threats but I have a very hard time feeling sorry for him.

NV users, make sure that you have Triple Buffering enabled in No Man's Sky driver application profile. Makes a world of difference for smoothness and performance in general.

All in all I'd say that the game is in a very good shape technically now. The new TAA could use some improvement though as it introduced some minor flickering and I don't really like how it blurs the image on camera movements. Still, it's a huge step up from FXAA and helps with AAing shaders a lot.

I feel like the major problem here is the lack of communication. The fact that they went silent was the worst outcome. It's great that they brought out a pretty big update to the game, but it doesn't excuse staying silent. They could have put out a lot of fires.

Not gonna lie, that looks really good. That's a pretty hefty update. It doesn't change the base gameplay at all, but it does add a lot of nice diversion with some useful QOL improvements. Trepidatiously bullish on where they are going from here.

Will download and try this sometime this week.

I'm back. This base building sounds like a great add-on, but I hope it is easier to find stuff on the ground now with waypoints.

Option A: They communicate non-stop while working on patch. Community response: "Why aren't you guys working on the patch instead of talking here!" I've seen gamers actually tell a game studio's Twitter PR team to 'get the hell off the internet and go patch the game', as if the Twitter team has anything to do with it.

Option B: They go silent, and work on the patch. Community: "Why aren't they talking to us!"

Let's face it, there was no right or wrong here, any choice would have resulted in a bitter community lashback. It was a no-win situation. Now that the patch is out, the lack of comms is rendered moot - the patch speaks for itself. Hindsight is easy to use to make an argument, but it doesn't change the now. Inconsolable gamers are inconsolable no matter what.

Yeah, criticize the game and the work, but the personal attacks are too far, imo.

Class action for false advertising, sure.

Calling him a thief, eh.

Feels like it should have at launch. Ugh. But this is so much better. Just goofing off building a base is a lot of fun. Feels like it would significantly add to some of the tedious nature of the normal game mode, though. Absolutely every aspect of the game is improved.

The game will never not be divisive as hell, but it "feels" a lot more like the experience we were anticipating now.
Does creative let you just travel to any planet at will?
You still have to fly there and what systems you can warp to are limited by what hyperdrive you have installed, but you otherwise have total freedom and unlimited resources.

Indeed, died three times in the span of half an hour just trying to reach my ship.

The way I see it, they launched a game that was not what people were promised from interviews and previews of the game from Sean Murray. Them going silent is the worst thing they could have done. People felt cheated, conned, lied to. It's awesome they are supporting this game still, it REALLY is but the fact they refused to address people's complaints or anything just made them seem even worse.

They had no problem telling tall tales about the game before launch and conveniently went silent once they had people's money. They should have just been more transparent post-release. I'm sure there are plenty of people who would have appreciated that.

The lack of comm isn't considered moot to me just because they put out an update. It doesn't even fix the issues with the core game. It's cool that they put it out and showed how dedicated they are to it, but I can't see in what universe it's all good that they lied to consumers and ignored them for months because they put out an update.

Unfortunately they broke SLI and without SLI the framerate tanks when I look at water. Guess I'll wait for a fix.

What are impressions of the inventory size changes? That's was one of my biggest complaints.

It's swings and roundabouts really. You cannot have stacks of 100 items in your ship inventory only stacks of 5 items but a wider variety of items can be stacked now so eh...

You can have a Freighter with 13 or 15 slots and a base but i have no idea how inventory works with bases at the moment.

If they overhaul creature generation, I'll be all over this game. I might just grab it to reward such an ambitious group of people.

When you pull a single quote and attack it out of context - what did you expect would happen? That I would praise you for trying to spin one sentence from the whole? No, I'm going to think you don't understand what you've read or are purposefully trolling. I gave you the benefit of the doubt on not being a troll.

And what convenience? I'm a developer and a consumer and speak as both. What is convenient for me to bring up either advocating as a developer for the consumer or speaking as a consumer being tossed PR bullshit that never came to fruition? Again, fairly certain you are cherry picking.

Now I'm leaning towards you being a troll instead of being unable to understand context.

Is this how you deal with people that don't agree with your perspective on a topic? Try to segment them into shitty groups in some hope to belittle their stance? It is a terrible tactic to take.

I don't have an issue with mentioning that their approach has been poor. I have an issue that even after this time we still need to beat this dead horse.

Feel free to claim I can't read your content and that Im trolling if that helps.

Drop it. Let's just talk about the patch. The whining and shit is getting old.

Looking forward to reinstalling the game and checking the new features out. I more want to test the generation changes.

Yeah I'm most interested in how much of an improvement went into the outer space to atmosphere lod changes. From the streams it looks greatly improved.

I'd love to talk about the patch if I could get past the CTD...

Planet algorithms being changed to be more diverse is promising. Nobody posting images, though.

Deleted my save to start with a clean slate. I'll give this a shot. I like the idea of surviving and building on a dead world.

So in percentage terms, how much does this update make good on all of their proposed features leading up to the game's original release? 10%? 20%? I haven't been following this stuff but have wanted to try it at least.

I'm entirely happy after reinstalling it a bit ago and having messed around the past couple hours. On the generation stuff, everything is more broad. The color palette is much larger on planets, in space and with lighting. Plant life is more varied and can be larger. Fauna seems to have more options, too, but only a few planets worth of experience so far.

This isn't a new/different game, but it feels a ton like going from how late early access to full retail is "supposed" to work. Saying that every imaginable thing is improved in at least some minor way is not an understatement. Well no, the GUI is exactly the same, but that was already entirely fine. Any and everything else, though!

It's not a percentage thing, and that would be impossible to pin down anyway with the constantly moving goalposts during development. There's no multiplayer obviously, but beyond that the smell test of "does this feel like proper space exploration?" is much closer. Much more depth now.

I traded the game in after 6 days, but may give it a look again after another update or two. I've appreciated the ambition of the team, but it does seem like they bit off more than they could chew. Hopefully this doesn't discourage them from creating another game with a more reigned in scope.

Early Access would have done this game wonders.

I'm in full agreement. There's no forgiveness without contrition. All I want to see is an acknowledgment that they made mistakes. I'm ready to forgive them, but they don't seem ready to apologize. For anything.

I think this will be a game that three or four years out will have alot of defenders who like what the game will eventually become. It's clear this game should have had a bigger team behind it and more development before launching.
