No Man's Sky: Foundation Update (v1.1)

"If you could have lived our lives"

oh get it over it you overselling shrill. Next time don't run a prerelease campaign of pure chaff and then release what was a relatively polished indie early access title at $60.

You lied your way to a fortune. No one will make the same mistake with one of your titles again.

right, that comment is so whiny. Awful

What is the point of having the same argument about the misrepresentation of this game when it is so clearly factual in every thread about this game?

That's the bit that bugs me, the repetition of the argument. It doesn't add anything to the discussion that hasn't been hashed over a thousand times already. At this point they're either preaching to the converted or engaged in a futile endeavor of trying to sway somebody who has already decided they will play the game anyway.

Maybe these comments were seen Friday and today, but I had missed them, so putting them back into the thread here in case others missed them too:

Hello,
This week Hello Games will be releasing an update to No Man’s Sky. We’re calling it The Foundation Update, because we have added the foundations of base building, and also because this is putting in place a foundation for things to come.
Detailed patch notes will follow, and release will be soon.
Coming from five years of intense development, immediately after No Man’s Sky released the team spent six weeks updating the game with 7 patches across both platforms (the last of these was 1.09 on Sept 24th which you can read about here http://www.no-mans-sky.com/log/). These fixed many of the most common or critical bugs and issues post-release.
In the nine weeks since then our small team has been hard at work on development, testing and certification for the Foundation Update. It won’t be our biggest update, but it is the start of something.
The discussion around No Man’s Sky since release has been intense and dramatic. We have been quiet, but we are listening and focusing on improving the game that our team loves and feels so passionately about.
Positive or negative feedback, you have been heard and that will truly help to make this a better game for everyone.
This update will be the first small step in a longer journey. We hope you can join us.
Thank you,
Hello Games

We're getting better as quickly as we can for the players who invested in us. Thank you for sticking with us.

We hope you enjoy this first proper update. We didn't want to talk about anything in it until it was 100% certain.

Maybe if they didn't lie and rip people off they wouldn't be acting like assholes.

You're advocating a pretty low threshold of assholery here.

Buy videogame -> Feel ripped off -> Asshole.

One of those steps is a pretty big leap which speaks to more than just a single game and how it was marketed.

What is it about this game that has turned some people into raging crazy people?

As someone who a) did not follow development of the game and b) has never played it (only bought it on Friday), I think it's obvious Murray misrepresented the game. That's not acceptable and they have a lot of work to do in rebuilding the trust they had with their community.

But that's it. If you don't like the game or them, just move on already. What is the point of having the same argument about the misrepresentation of this game when it is so clearly factual in every thread about this game? They can basically never repair the trust they destroyed through patches (or rather it would take a lot more than six months, and even then people will still not be satisfied). I don't understand what people want besides Murray to go on twitter and beg for forgiveness.

Right, as someone who never followed this game during development but checked it out on release I thought it was quite interesting. It has always been (at least since late 80s when I started reading reviews) that you need to wait for reviews to see if the previews live up to your expectations, so the vitriol this game has received seemed way over the top, especially as many who were too naive to wait for the reviews were entitled to refunds.

Anyway, this update seems quite interesting, I'll jump back in.

Pretty much.
As someone that followed the game a bit before and leading to release, then preordered it digitally and played it day one... I enjoyed what I played.

That there were aspects that needed to be better, of course. But didn't felt betrayed or backstabbed.

But the way some people act around this game, some despite not playing it is a bit... obsessive and worrisome. Is not surprising, since quite a good amount of people even in here play games they don't like and consider to be horrible, to earn trophies.

Usually , if I don't like a game and I got it day one I just stop playing it, warn myself to keep an eye out next time and move on.

Yet, some just don't want to let this game go. Some even got refunds for their purchase and still go to threads about it to complain. I mean, what else can be done? Not even Murray asking forgiveness will do much, outside getting the laugh of this same people, call vindication... but will continue doing the same.

Seems like they added large fleets (from reddit)
Yes, that's in the patch notes. For the original release they had larger ships than in the trailers, but fewer of them; now it seems they have both.

Terrain is way improved. Found a planet with actual canyons and rivers.
There were actual canyons and rivers before the patch.

There is nothing actually happening in NMS's universe to give the player a reason to play the game apart from gathering resources (which isn't fun) and now building stuff....
This is a very narrow and exclusionary definition of why people might play games. Just being somewhere else and seeing novel things is plenty for some folks. They're no less "real gamers" than people who want stuff like you.

Its sounds like you're absolving hello games of straight up lying in their media hype.

If this is the foundation, what is the part called that people paid $60 for on release? Just sayin.
Is right in the beginning of the patch notes. Is the foundation for the new updates. :p
Welcome to the Foundation Update. It adds the foundations of base building, and is a foundation for things to come. This is the first of many free updates.
Doesn't mean anything else... just sayin'.

Finally get out of the 2nd system and the next planet I land on has "Nuclear emission" atmo. WAT. Why? Why not give me a heads up before I land?

As I said, I didn't follow their media hype, so I can't comment on that. I can however comment on pre order culture, and how that's especially naive to do with a new IP. My other pet hate is media organisations complaining that they don't get get free review copies ahead of release date (or are embargoed). Don't be beholden to these massive publishers! Buy your own games (preferably from a retail contact who can supply them ahead of release), and tell your readers to wait for the review instead of buying day one!

So yeah, for people who buy day one without reading reviews, I have little sympathy ... personal responsibility ... for a $60 purchase, which they could probably still sell for $30+ ... what's the big deal?

Can you give an example of a media outlet doing that?

I mean a company literally lied about their product, its kind of alarming how easily you toss that aside and put it on the buyer.

Anyone have pics?

Do they flow?
Down hill over terrain or just a flat plain?
They don't flow or anything like that, same water just the terrain generation carves out shapes of rivers now. Terrain overall is much better than before.

I just wish they would make multiple versions of the common plants like Thamium9 plants and Platinum plants, so that we don't see the same exact looking plants on every planet...

I've been wondering this for a long time now.

I work on projects worth millions, and have unfortunately seen some of those millions lost. Even then, I've seen people maintain far more calm and composure than what I've seen on NMS threads on GAF and elsewhere.

Yeah, it sucks that you wasted 60 bucks on a game that was nowhere near as good as you were led to believe. But why is that enough to send you into a rage? Shit don't make sense to me

What you're suggesting works in a perfect world, but this ain't it. Gamers can also preorder whatever they want. It's their money, but that doesn't excuse outright lying and this weird persecution complex Sean is displaying.

Can we swap mode on the fly? Or does it require a whole new save/game? I was max level before i stopped playing so I'm tempted by Survival Mode to pick it back up.

I can understand the POV of people like Jacksinthe who don't want to let problematic industry practices continue in silence, but yes, this is the first new info we've had in months.

What's more, development like that is a hike not a sprint. It can take a long time for these things to happen but people show up crying for info every minute in an NMS thread.

People have been scammed and openly lied to by a developer. It's not exactly rocket science, trying to understand why no one will trust Hello Games ever again.

I mean a company literally lied about their product, its kind of alarming how easily you toss that aside and put it on the buyer.

I didn't toss it aside, I stated that I didn't even read their "lies", so it's not something that I'm knowledgable about enouh to comment on. I'm someone that's interested in unreleased prototype games, they're often quite different to the released product, that's a normal part of game development. So yeah, buyer beware, don't base your purchase on beta code and wait for reviews before you buy a game.

Well I only read the first page of this sorry I didn't read all 19 but all I have to say is, damn GAF is quick to forget. Always.

I'm sorry but I don't have any sympathy nor praise for Hello Games. They (Sean Murray) lied through their teeth the entire development process and sold people a hugely misadvertised product.
The fact that they can take everyone's money with false promises, then MONTHS later release the product KINDA SORTA similar to what they promised to deliver the first time, and get praise for it from GAF and probably other gaming communities does not sit well with me.

We are allowing this kind of behavior to be ok. It's NOT.
And more and more companies continue to do shit like this and at the same time slowly see how much further than can push practices like this. And they keep getting away with it.

If you bought the game I guess I'm happy that maybe it was worth the money now, but don't give them praise for it. They all lied to you for quite some time.

Also that comment about "oh poor us the last few months" give me a break

I mean a company literally lied about their product, its kind of alarming how easily you toss that aside and put it on the buyer.

This happens literally every day. Hell, compare the Final Fantasy XV that's being sold to us to the 2013 trailers and see how much of that made it into the final game. Here's a hint: Barely any of it. Hello Games definitely didn't play it straight, but "buyer beware" isn't just some kind of empty aphorism. Anyone who waited a few days for reviews and online impressions on NMS would have known exactly what they were getting into. The lesson of this game should be "preorder culture is anti-consumer and you shouldn't do it" but most seem to think it's "Sean Murray should be lynched in the town square."

What you're suggesting works in a perfect world, but this ain't it. Gamers can also preorder whatever they want. It's their money, but that doesn't excuse outright lying and this weird persecution complex Sean is displaying.

I'm not excusing anything, it's not a perfect world, gamers can pre order whatever they want, and it's their own fault when what they pre order isn't what they wanted. Sure, they can complain that what they got isn't what they were promised, but at the end of the day they only have themselves to blame for buying before they saw what the product was.

Yeah, I'm not saying HG deserves your trust. It's rational to take everything they say henceforth with a massive grain of salt. What I'm saying is that the anger inspired makes no sense given that in the end, all NMS is a videogame

What you're suggesting works in a perfect world, but this ain't it. Gamers can also preorder whatever they want. It's their money, but that doesn't excuse outright lying and this weird persecution complex Sean is displaying.

Persecution complex? He received death threats.

Anyway his comment about what they've been through is almost certainly referring to the fact they've been crunching for months on end rather than any internet drama.

Difference being that Square has been quite open about the changes they've made. What you're equating is if we play FFXV and discover you don't get to drive the car around. Or use summons. Or cast spells. Hello Games lied about intricate, important game mechanics that just disappeared.

Can anyone let me know if they fixed the stutter when turning the camera with a controller? All the videos they release look around really slowly as if they're purposely trying to cover it up.

I mean a company literally lied about their product, its kind of alarming how easily you toss that aside and put it on the buyer.

And it'll fade into obscurity like everything else. Stop harping on about it already. Nothing is going to change and you're not on some noble crusade to let everyone know that they lied. Pretty much everyone already knows they did.

It's getting tiring to see it in every NMS topic. Give it a rest. Maybe they'll turn it around with updates.

Does Thamium9 even have a specific use anymore? Pulse Thrusters run on Iron now.

All these new base building recipes being added is annoying, since I haven't discovered them to use them. :(

That burden shouldn't be shouldered by the gamers. They'really perfectly within their rights to preorder or get hyped based off pre-release information. The industry has worked like that for decades. It does not excuse a literal bait and switch from the developers.

"Fucking Sean Murray" is the new "Thanks, Obama!".

I don't see anything about pro support.

And I wish this was 20 on PSN, as it is on Amazon, as I'd like to have it digital and available without disc swap.
