Step 2: Buy No Man's Sky
I pulled the No Man's Sky trigger, and it's downloading now on Steam

Do you need to "learn" the recipe for doing that or is it just automatically available now? And how do you bring up the crafting menu? I figured I'd need to find a pre-fab unit and start from there, but if I can just plop down a base anywhere I please that would be a lot easier.
I'm still looking for some rivers though! The new Photo Mode is nice, but I wish there was a faster way to access it. It'd be great if they maybe add it to the quick menu or something. I wish there was a button press to do it, or a combination (like down and triangle or some shit). I hate having to constantly go back and forth in the menus when I want to take a HUDless screenshot then pop the HUD back on.
The planets look better since the update. I'm hoping though that the flora and stuff like rocks get a bit more varied with future updates. The weather and clouds need a huge upgrade as well. It's pouring rain but you look up and see a starry sky.
Decided to check this out briefly and it's definitely a big improvement. The base building seems like it isn't for me until I get the money to buy a freighter but I guess some people will like it. The image quality and QOL improvements make up for a lot though.
One minor thing the game desperately needs is an FOV slider. Especially after the Titanfall 2 update, it took awhile to get used to how zoomed in the camera is.
Wasn't cloud tech one of those things that would get a boost? I thought Sean mentioned it before they went silent.
No. I know very few console games have FOV sliders but NMS has it so low compared to everything else that it's jarring. The PC version includes a FOV slider. Does the PS4 version not?

Can't post a screenshot right now but I just found a Night Crystal. Description: "Used in the creation of technological devices and starship manufacture."
Bring it.
That's a foundation. If you build a room off the ground, you can put a foundation under it to make it have supports or pillar of legs under.So... I have kind of a strange bug... I used to be able to build very tiny pillars in the infrastructure section, that were just as high as the other walls and so on. But when I just tried to continue building my base I couldn't build those tiny pillars any more.
Anybody know what's going on and how I can fix it? I need the pillars :/
not nearly on the scale of what weve seen from the trailers, rather just a really long neck on a build of one of the larger creatures, but its a start
I have definitely found creatures as big as the ones in the trailers. If there was a bear-body-type beast the size of the one in that person's screenshots it would be taller.
Okay, let's see what No Man's Sky can show us. Note that everything I'm about to post is from the unmodded game, prior to the Foundation Update.I've seen some rivers but they aren't very pronounced or cool looking and when I talk about mountains I really haven't seen any cliffs with sharp drop offs. I want forests to be so dense that you can't see anything when you're in them so that you can just get lost.
Still think there needs to be a better way to travel on the ground.. walking sucks and flying I feel like you miss stuff.
TL;DR - The amount of variation that can be found in No Man's Sky is really much, much greater than most folks think. Its gigantic universe has always been filled with surprises.
Is there a way to turn off the survival aspects in the PC version somehow?
Haven't bought it but starting to get interested.
You're right, thanks. I will take a look at this come the steam holiday sale.Creative mode would be your answer.
Okay, let's see what No Man's Sky can show us. .
Yo you might want to quote those images dude.
I pretty much agree, but not on the rivers. Rivers are moving water and those don't move. NMS just applies a water level to a planet at a random value on the z-axis and fills up whatever empty space it can fill up. I'd love to have true rivers and waterfalls, but let's be real.
p.s. those pre-Foundation ground textures were ugly as sin. Much improved from what I've seen so far now.
Some one already pointed out the water doesn't work that way in the subreddit. They posted a picture of a pond on top of a hill/mountain that was higher than the water level below. Also apparently the engine won't support running water so I personally am happy to suspend disbelief and see them as rivers and take for granted they are supposed to be flowing (maybe it's cause when I was a kid games require you have a lot of suspension of disbelief cause game engines and computers couldn't make things look even close to realistic.
Edit: apparently it was here a few posts up that some one posted proof.

Reddit user confirmed that the player message feature works as advertised. Can't see the other player's base though.
It would be pretty neat to have the universe slowly dotted with player-built bases that we could find. There are enough planets that finding them would still be pretty rare. Base building doesn't appeal to me in this game at all, but it would be neat to find others while exploring. So the other player can build his base in the exact same spot (looking at that base home in the background?).l? So per planet it will always pick the same spot? The weird thing is that so far for me the base was always very close. If it would be one per planet you would think sometimes you would need to circle around the planet to reach it.
Neat. The message thing is the first time people could interact in this game though. Wouldn't be hard to show the whole base now I would think. Not live maybe but in general there is no difference tech-wise from leaving data in form of a message.
Maybe pretend you are neighbors and constantly leave messages for each other at the base haha
Nope, it's automatically available. Press up on the d-pad and you'll get a few tech items you can build anywhere on the planet. Once you start building a base you'll access that stuff from there also, and you go up and down on the d-pad to cycle through the different categories.
To be clear, I don't know if there's a way to build a base on an "empty lot", the Signal Booster just points you to an empty base with a starting room you can expand from. I think it's probably fixed to pre-defined sites because the proc gen has to clear out flat areas for buildings to sit on.
Yeah, adding it to the quick menu is a great idea. I don't know what they were thinking putting it on the Options menu with a warning every time, it's like they think people who have never played a videogame before are playing NMS.

Yeah, I don't get it. I should tweet Innes McKendrick and suggest it. He likes my tweets every once in a while. It just boggles my mind that it doesn't work like other games. Just let me click a button and remove the HUD!!
This is the exact reason why the gain from adding realtime multiplayer would never justify the time put into its development. I don't ever expect it to arrive and I'm fine with it, I'd rather they put effort into improving the single player aspect of it instead of wasting time adding something only a handful of players would ever be able to use.You don't understand the math involved at all. At most, bases double the chance of encountering evidence of another player. In a possibility space this enormous, that's asymptotically no change at all. Unless you use metacommunication outside the game to coordinate, chances are still vanishingly small.
It makes me wonder how NMS's worlds are so vibrant and the likes of Elite are so spartan.

I don't know if it's the same pic, but the last one in my post above is definitely not an optical illusion. The lake is clearly at a different level than the ocean below.Yeah we talked about that picture a few months ago in the OT and I think most of us decided it was just an optical illusion. I've never seen a lake up by itself on a mountain....
Dear Hello Games. Please add Rigogen to the planet scans. Please. Or make it spawn more often.
Traveller's Log Day 3. The hunt for the mythical Rigogen continues. Despite landing on several wet and one oceanic world, this critical substance continues to elude me. All base construction has ground to a halt as a result of this, and I am beginning to wonder if my employees are pranking me. Though I am not sure if the Korvac have a word for prank. I am sure the Vy'keen word for it is the same as for "blood feud".I'm beginning to write self-inset fanfiction about it.
The local space pirates keep me mildly entertained in their feeble attempt to harass me or a freighter. It would be funny if it wasn't so sad. Their engine parts now fill my vaults.
I carry the parts for a Beacon, which I will construct on the first planet I find the legendary Rigogen on. There will be mild celebration and then I will strip the planet clean. By hand. Leaving with less than 2000 units will be considered a failure.
I desperately need a freighter but I'm holding off because I want this one. Anyone seen it? It was there in 1.09 but I haven't found it as of late.
Apparently I got lucky and found it pretty quickly. You do know what it looks like right?

There is only one habitable base per system or each planet has one or more? I build a signal booster, but only show the base in the other planet I don´t wanna build.
