Old? Contrary to what was reported a while back, there is no online battle mode.

Puissance Nintendo: Will the Battle mode be playable in Wifi?

Hideki Konno: Unfortunately, the Battle mode will not be accessible in Wifi. It will be thus only one mode of race to 4 players.(local wireless)

You can only play online through match-making (random?) and games initiated through buddy invites.
No Server browsing or anything like that.

PN: How will people who are distant be able to find themselves if there is no authentification?

HK: It will be relatively simple. For example, if you only will play with your friends, you will have what one will call a buddy-list. And if you want to play with the perfect unknown ones, one will find you on the network. It is thought that two types of adversaries against will be played: those which correspond to certain criteria, and those for which you do not want any filter like nationality. People find themselves then in a cyberspace, finding themselves all together. Our mechanism, automatically, carries out associations of players per level.
seeing as how they've never addressed how players will communicate online I'm guessing there won't be any voice chat.

Well, that's retarded, even though I've always had more fun with the 2p grand prix mode... Oh well, I know a lot of people love the battle mode. Stupid nintendo, stupid.

That's disappointing. Online battle mode would have been great. They're implementing the Halo 2 matchmaking style it seems. That has its advantages and disadvantages. It's quick and effect, but I wish they would have allowed server browsing. This way you'll be able to find the specific type of matches you want to play.

Shuri officially announces that MK:DS was downgraded from "must buy" to "no interest at all" with this post.

what hell.. would it really have been that difficult to make the battle mode online since the gp mode is already online? ? ?DF

I don't see the problem with a online battle mode if you already got it for gp...maybe it's because of time constraints and that they need the game done for the holidays.

It just isn't the same if you can't taunt or punch the other persons.
Hope there will at least be some kind of chat room associated with each online game.

Battle mode was the worst part of MK, seriosuly. I could care less if it were online or not.

well the snes mario kart battle mode is awesome. It's not been as good since, but still. I wanted battle mode online as well.

I've never liked battle mode in MK, and only played it when other players whined about me CRUSHING them when racing.

CRUSHING THEM.

Just as I'll crush each, and everyone of you. CRUSH. :D

I hope that's not the case, cause no online in Advance Wars either.

FOR FUCKS SAKE, we even used those annoying fucking link cables to do 4-player linkup battles in Mario Kart GBA! I WANT TO CHALLENGE THE WORLD

Why did anyone think that Nintendo WiFi would be this awesomly huge infrastructure?

It's gonna be two things and two things only:

Playing a game with your friends.
Playing a game with random people.

There's not gonna be voice chat, there's not gonna be setting up rooms (a stupid concept if matchmaking is done properly), etc.

This won't be Xbox Live, so don't expect it.

hey yo. thats what halo2 is like.

by the way, i dont think people have an issue with how the online is set up.. the issue is that the battle mode is not online.

I can't understand why battle mode wouldnt be online...
Even if it's just 2 player, it SHOULD be online.

Nintendo hates feature-rich games unless it's Pikmin or Zelda.

someone needs to advise nintendo that battle mode is the whole point of mario kart. judging from double dash and this news, they seem to have forgotten.

Well, the "Halo 2" style of matchmaking can be extremely frustrating if you want to play a particular map or mode against a random group of people.

Nintendo's strategy: Got to leave something for the sequel. :lol

dont worry, the banana controler will show up soon again :lol

True. :lol :lol

All we need to see is Sony keeping the banana-rang controller for the PS3 and announce a cut in features and things will sort of even itself out.

Ehhh. That sucks.

Not too big of a deal I guess though, but it would have been great to have. MK64's battle mode was the best in the series.

no big deal? this is a big deal. most of my multiplayer mario kart action is battle mode. racing sucks.

whew! wasn't planning on buying this because it looked a lot like the N64 mario kart and now this is the final nail in the coffin. $35 saved.
