No Rest for the Wicked may be skipping Xbox due to "market conditions" [Update: Dev reply added to OP]

Folks, can we drop the conspiracy theory insanity? If NeoGAF becomes more and more like the purple forum, don't be surprised if people stop posting here as well.

So no, it's not a shakedown, it's called common fucking sense.

What our community has been wanting the most is Co-Op and Console support, so we want fulfill those wishes as soon as humanly possible. We're already hard at work on Co-Op so people can play Wicked in Multiplayer pretty soon. And after that the idea is that we'll release 1.0 sooner than initially expected so that we don't have to deal with the hassle of being an Early Access Game on Consoles. Wicked is already in a pretty great state, so by the time we exit Early Access, we'll be golden.

And in order to get there fast, we'll first support the platform that has the most users purely out of resource reasons. We're a comparatively small indie studio, so doing a console port at the quality level we want is not a small task. Porting to Xbox means porting to Xbox Series X and Series S and that'll take more time to optimize compared to porting to PS5 and PS5Pro. So we're most likely going to do PS5/PS5Pro first and launch there in order to make fans happy and supply other ports later.

That's literally all there is to it. And yes, we'll need to discuss with Xbox and Nintendo what the best strategies are to support their platforms and their features in the best way possible and that'll be an ongoing discussion.

So there's nothing to see here, it's just common sense with us having to make the right moves given the resources we have while making sure we give players what they want as fast as possible.
Thanks for the confirmation.

It's makes almost as much sense to make a Dreamast port as it does an Xbox port at this point.

Does that mean your initial scope of 1.0 is limited due to wanting to get it on console sooner?

It's fine either way, one of my favorites games already but hopefully with a 1.0 release and ps5 sales you can keep putting out the content you intended or dreamt of. I could see this being a really fun PVP game when that's finally added.

Sounds like a shakedown. They obviously, want Microsoft to foot the porting bill.
This theory has been debunked by the dev but,

1- Why would anyone release games on Xbox if its not on Gamepass? We all know how well games sell on Xbox ( they dont ). Ports costs money, and the juice isn't worth the squeeze, especially for new IP.
2- Why release their game on Gamepass for free? of course they're going to get paid to release games on that service. Where else would they get their return on investment on the Xbox platform?

Its obvious that MS should foot the bill regardless by default. No shakedowns necessary.

Don't know if I misunderstood your post but the Xbox console won't have Steam OS.
At best it'll have Steam big picture mode, on Windows, alt+tabbed from Xbox App through the Xbox button.
But the more likely scenario is that it'll just launch Steam games through the Xbox App.

Yeah, I should have been more clear. PC now has a subdivision of users running games through SteamOS thats steadily growing. I myself have a Lenovo Legion Go SteamOS version, as well a Windows PC. It is in Moon Studios best interest on to have their game running exquisite on both operating systems upon release.

News like this just makes it weirder and weirder that Helldivers 2 is coming to Xbox
Honestly, I feel like Helldivers is just something Sony is doing so they can point to it and say, "Hey, we tried releasing on Xbox and didn't get many sales, so there's no point and trying it, again." Kinda like they did with Horizon Forbidden West and putting it on PS Plus early.

The choice to convert the Xbox platform into primarily being driven by the PC Windows Xbox SKU is motivated in significant part by the loss of 3rd party support in the future.

Every year will get exponentially worse on the 3rd party front for the traditional Xbox SKU in terms of support going forward.

OK Sneakers. We'll come back to this post in 2027.

Nope, don't worry, 1.0 will have the finished campaign and so on. And obviously we'll still be supporting Wicked with tons of updates after 1.0 and also release Expansions afterwards, etc. - The main goal here is to finally allow console players to also hop in and we just want to avoid having to ship an Early Access title on consoles, which would open up a whole new can of worms that we just don't want to deal with.

Wicked is already in a pretty great state and with this strategy we can just focus on polish and optimization and don't have to worry about supporting all kinds of platforms all at once, which will make our lives significantly easier. It just also goes straight to our DNA. If we do something, we want to shoot for super high quality and doing a really good console port that actually squeezes the most out of the hardware just takes quite a bit of time. We've been there with the Ori Switch Ports where we had to optimize like mad in order to get a game that initially made the Xbox sweat run at 60fps on Switch - that's a really fun challenge for our Tech guys, but doing that requires a ton of focus and time.

But will they update the main character to stop looking like a super deformed uber retarded version of Phil Spencer before he lost all the weight?

That's what really matters.

I've always thought that once you get a game running fine on consoles, it would just make sense to ship it on whatever consoles that can run them. That doesn't seem to be the case it seems. In any case, I've been wanting to experience this game for a very long time, hopefully that's soon-ish.

Some of the posts in this thread.. the Devs are doing this to blackmail ms for gamepass money? Come on.
And that page 3 lmao.

Gave me some inspiration.

adamsapple adamsapple too on the nose?
This is also Phil Spencer´s Xbox Strike Team:

Phil Spencer's Xbox S.T.R.I.K.E. Team™

Definition:
Short for Strategic Triage & Reputation Insurance Kommando Elite, the Xbox S.T.R.I.K.E. Team™ is an elite, highly classified unit of narrative engineers, optics tacticians, and build triage specialists — all handpicked from Phil Spencer's most intimate inner circle (reportedly headquartered behind a false panel in his Game Pass-scented sex room).

This shadow force operates beyond the org chart, summoned only when disaster looms large: a beloved studio shuttered, a blockbuster game crashes at launch, or Twitter begins trending with "What's even the point of Xbox?" With the tap of a controller-shaped medallion, the S.T.R.I.K.E. Team is deployed — armed with NDAs, pivot decks, and just enough gameplay footage to generate a week of goodwill.

But their true power? Game Pass. Everything — the damage control, the vaporized promises, the artful reframing of delays into player-first polish — is funneled into a single, all-consuming mantra:
"It's coming to Game Pass, day one."
That's the sedative. That's the solution. That's the spell.

Untraceable. Unaccountable. Unrelenting.
They don't fix the problem. They package it — in Dolby Atmos, 4K, 60fps (performance mode available post-launch patch).

Unofficial motto: "Stability. Optics. Spin. In Phil We Trust."
Leaked codename: "Operation Afterglow: All Roads Lead to Game Pass."

If the AI says it, it must be true.

I have bought and gifted this game to friends and family. Not only because of the little I played the game is awesome (waiting to play the full game once is out of ea) but hoping that one day Moon Studios can buy the rights for Ori from MS and make a third entry.

Well it sucks you have to be put in such place to make those decisions. Personally I am eagerly waiting for the ps5 version and will absolutely be there day 1
