Got mine yesterday and as a first time smartphone user I have to say I'm very impressed. Even just using it as a media player sans sim card it has a ton of functionality, besides all the wifi uses like checking email and internet browsing, it has other useful apps that work without a sim- nokia maps, which can even pinpoint your location, the yellow pages app, media streaming, etc. For $50 this was an absolute steal. I wish I had bought a second one.

amazon just emailed me that they'll refund me the $10 difference. yay!
Thats awesome they did that, Amazon never lets me down with stuff like this. Alternatively if Amazon didn't honor the price match request, depending on which credit card you used (assuming you did use a credit card), you could have contacted the lender. Most cards offer price protection within the first 30 days.

Yeah either get a SIM cutter cheap off eBay, or cut it yourself using a PDF template. I've known phone shops to even cut the SIM for you if you just go in and ask them to.

How do we unlock this? For any other mobile company?

from what i've read, it's pretty difficult to unlock the phone.

Currently my options are to either go to my local chinese mall and see if any of the shops there would be able to successfully unlock it or find a friend in the US with an AT&T contract and get them to call AT&T customer service and get it unlocked.

that, or I keep it as a wifi device. If anyone else in canada has figured out a proper way to unlock their 520, do let the rest of us know.

Does the phone require a screen protector? I don't have one on my s3 and it has no scratches.

My brother has his naked and there is light scratching over the glass if look closely at it. Not really an issue when the screen is turned on but if it's the sort of thing that'd annoy you regardless I'd recommend one.

Man I'm loving this phone. Using the AT&T GoPhone 10 cents/minute plan with a $5/month 200 texts package, I'm basically paying $9/month for 200 texts/ 100 minutes, with all the advantages of a smartphone as long as I'm have wifi. Talk about smartphoning on the ultra-cheap. Beats the shit out of a dumb phone.

BTW, I picked up THIS CASE and THESE SCREEN PROTECTORS, which I'd recommend if you're looking.

So if I'm already on AT&T is this a pretty straightforward process? Do I just install my current sim? And without a doubt, there's no contract renewal, correct?

You may need a new sim if it is not the right size but it was as simple as going to an AT&T store to get one. The guy even installed it for me.

Yep just pop your current SIM in. If you don't have a Micro SIM just get it cut down to size.

And no there is no contract with the phone. All you're paying for is the device and that's it.

May just buy this as a dev phone.

Edit: Oh, its not crazy cheap any more :(

If you were going to buy it for $50, then surely you could grab it for the extra $10 it is now, no(?)

I'm actually going to be doing the same thing though, I'm going to buy it for $60 just for the dev phone aspects of it. I have my WP7 unlocked as a dev phone, but that thing is practically ancient by now.

What if my current plan is not for a smartphone? It does have unlim data and some minutes and text. I just don't want to go there and have them wanting to switch me to a full blown smartphone plan.

As in it's coming from a dumb phone to a smartphone? It'll still work.

I've the same offer through Giffgaff bar unlimited texts. Hard to beat although Three's £12.90 a month rolling contract tempts me with no roaming charges where they operate. Plus free 4G where they have it.

Correct.

yes, three are pretty great

i got the £9.90 a month contract for a yr... because realistically, im not really going to change anything within the yr, then after that im assuming it just rolls on per month to month at £9.90

I have a 520 and was wondering now that at&t's unlocking policy changed do I have to use the phone for 6 months to get it unlocked or just activate it and pop out the sim and put it back to my other phone and wait 6 months.

Yep you can buy it, use it and never stick a SIM into it.

Keep it as a sat nav, music player or a spare phone/drunk phone.

It's what I do.

Hell I use it with a water proof blue tooth speaker and take it with me pretty much everywhere. Still warns me everytime it powers up from a reboot that it doesn't have a SIM card and can only dial 911, which is frankly a bonus.

This thing has great battery life. I wish the music player had some better/smarter playlist options but other than that it's a great bluetooth MP3 player. It's pretty dang loud with headphones on.

GPS works fine too, the camera is shitty as all hell but better than no camera.
