Tonight I witnessed for the first time the Aurora Borealis. I've seen it once before when I was much younger, but it was limited to a postage stamp on the sky, and even that filled me with awe. But tonight... I didn't get the multicoloured fire described in the northern regions of the Earth, but tonight was a visual splendor I've never experienced before. I've always had a fascination with the Northern Lights and was one of my goals in life to travel up north to view them in full. Tonight I feel my dreams satisfied. It is truly incredible, awe-inspiring, and a million other words that don't even exist yet to describe the sheer immensity.

It happened quite by surprise too, through turn of events I ended up staying out quite late, much later than I originally intended to when heading out. And upon coming home I noticed something different about the sky, and looked up, and just... my mind just melted. I called my friend and we just stood there for 20 minutes in the freezing cold taking it in. He went inside and I went home, put on some winter clothes, took my lawn chair out, sleeping bag, and got my iPod and just sat on my driveway laying back taking it all in to some sweet music. It was one of the most incredible moments in my life.

As for the lights themselves, while watching them for so long they seemed to have phases. At first they started from the horizon in 360 degrees and shot like fire up into a dome shape, and the top of the dome was the concentration of light and it was just on fire. This phase lasted for quite a while and after getting my chair setup going I saw the light start to stabilize and coalesce. This huge arc formed with two huge arms going out in either direction, before the fire was blinking and any patch could be on or off, but these arms were SOLID never flickering and the middle was this mass concentration of light that started to SPIRAL. The center kept on spiraling and eventually the arms started getting sucked inwards with the center constantly getting brighter and more concentrated. Then the patches came again except this time that started on the outside of the center part and moved inwards and looked liked they formed a tube into the depths of the heavens. Then it was concentrated in the center again but getting fainter as clouds QUICKLY moved in and covered it like curtain as the light was dying out.

God... it was just so incredible. I don't even know what universe I'm in anymore.

Yes, they are very beautiful even though I haven't seen them personally. Where are you located?

Actually its cool to hear about this, two things that I want to see in my life are the northern lights and the sahara desert.

When I was about 10 years old I was sailing with my family on our boat and we saw a meteor shower one night that lasted for a good twenty minuites. Fantastic, better than any fireworks...

Welcome beautful toddler, Madison Elizabeth, to the horde!
I remember when I was in 7th grade. I was outside playing football at night and we look up and shit all this crazy shit in the sky. We thought the world was going to end or something. The sky was fuckin technicolor. I couldn't comprehend that shit at all.

Having spent several years in the north, I've seen my fair share of northern lights. Fantastic... although I've got to say in the more recent years, I seemed to see less of them than in the past. It took over a year for my wife to see them for the first time (my first stay up north was not with her).

It's a fantastic sight to see.

ProTip: If you'd like to ever "look out" for the Northern Lights, keep track of news reports about things like heavy sunspot activity and such. When the sun goes wild, the likelihood of good northern lights is much better.

Of course, I've also been told "the lights should be great tonight" and seen nothing, so it's not what I would call a guarantee.
