Nostalgia time: Simgolf

I've never heard of this game but it really looks like something I'd enjoy so:
It was a Maxis/Firaxis collaboration published by EA, so I dunno how an official remake/update would work. Best hope would be if Sid decides to make a spiritual successor at Firaxis.

I'm tempted to pick up a copy since there's confirmation of the game working on Win7 but $30 is kinda steep for such an old game. Guess I could look for a used copy or something. Shame I missed this back in '02, guess I was still mostly a console gamer back then (I had never even heard of Sid Meier until Civ4 :p).

The game is worth full price even now. Seriously!

eBay seems to be $10-14 for the game + shipping, so you could easily get it under $20.

Thanks. I've notice an Amazon seller has it for 14.99 as well so I'll probably pick it up in a couple weeks.

Also, I can't believe how dated the game's website looks. It's surprising to see just how much the internet has evolved, 2002 feels like yesterday.

How have I never heard of this game?!?

I've played most of the sim cities, railroad tycoon, theme parks/hospitals, etc... but I have seriously never heard of Sim Golf.

I feel like I missed a gem.

I think I just mentioned this in the GOG thread. Amazing game, came out when the Tycoon craze was in. GOG really needs to get this game.

My only gripe in this game is that they don't show you the directions the AI will pick once you've opened a hole.

What do you mean? You mean where they'll aim their shots? See my posts above regarding the shot analyzer and the example screens. It'll work as long as there's a tee and a hole it can reference. It's pretty much essential in getting Classic rated holes. You'll have to be methodical in using it to check out every possible spot golfers may end up on a hole and make sure they won't take weird crazy shot paths from any of them. It's why all my holes end up with quite a bit of tree lines on the sides to prevent golfers from using other fairways or even rough to avoid a tough shot (which is what I'm trying to force them to do).

What have you done?? my backlog is to big to start playing this again.

I have probably put over 100 hours into this over the years.

Only 100? Light-weight. ;)

Though now you've reminded me that I should add SimGolf to Steam as a non-Steam game just to get some sort of time played tracking going.

Ah yeah that. I tend to forget opening that up XD

Sometimes I use houses for walling. Is it a good idea?

It can help redirect golfers from shooting in that direction, the main issue with houses is that if they're too close to the course and a ball ends up close to one, it can get really hard for a golfer to get back on to the fairway from there and they may end up getting stuck.

I mainly rely on trees (scenic trees if you can afford them) and water. The main thing I always end up fighting is golfers trying to use neighboring fairways from other holes.

Yeah, especially if you leave a single open path towards another hole.

On a related note, I take it that there are no flat links type maps eh?

From the default set, I think Scotland's the only one if you want flat links.

Your other option would be to go to Sandbox mode and make your own map using the terrain tools without having to worry about money.

Doesn't need one. There's nothing there that makes it feel too outdated now, it's aged very well.
The main thing it can use is a resolution bump, it doesn't go higher than 800x600.

I need to try one of these sim___ games, it seems like everytime someone makes a thread about it, everyone says how amazing it is.

Unfortunately not, at least no way to do so without using some sort of hacked executable or something.

I'm sure that's a case of "easier said than done', but that doesn't sound too hard to do.... so someone get on that.

Noone's bothered so far. :/

The most anyone's really done are no-cd executables.

That they are. And say what you will about EA, their The Sims are actually entertaining.

Theme Hospital
SimCity (4)
RollerCoaster Tycoon

The holy trinity of Sim/Tycoon/Theme games.

The first game, including both expansions, is pretty much perfect.
If you like it, or better, mastered it, get the sequel.

Avoid everything else. Especially the expansions of the sequel, which were made by a different, incompetent developer.

RollerCoaster Tycoon is way better than the other games in the franchise. Stick with that one. 3 was a big let down for me personally.

I'd almost agree with you but I put so much time into SimTower it wouldn't make sense to leave it off my list.

I want this for my iPad. Never played but it looks like it would work great with touch controls

This actually. EA need to get this done now that the ipad has enough headroom to run a full map. Really very much want this, loved the game and the demo was terribly addictive when it came out.

Main issue here is since this game was a collaboration between multiple dev studios, one of which is no longer using EA as a publisher, it could make such a proposal much harder to pull off.

Bumping the necrotic primarily due to my return to Sim Golf inspired by the Humble Sid Meier Bundle. It runs like shit, 800x600, no windowed mode, etc, BUT I just installed it in a winXP virtualbox, and shazam! Windowed mode and smooth sailing. Been rocking Sim Golf on the iPad now thanks to Splashtop and my windowed virtualization.

just repicked this up and trying to get it to run on my win 7 machine is a pain ive tried running it in all the different compatibility modes and ive even added it to the data execution prevention tab in the advanced system settings and the furthest ive gotten this thing to run is to the main options screen then it crashes to desk top

I'm with you on Sim Earth (or am I thinking of SimLife?), but I thought that Sim Ant kinda played itself once you got past a certain point.
