NPCB - Nintendo Pennant Chase Baseball

Take Two forced Nintendo's hand. Without EA, they really had no choice but to make their own game otherwise they would have an incomplete sports lineup.

I've never touched a baseball game in my entire life nor do i know what the hell baseball is but i will definitely pick this one up.

Its by Nintendo therefore I'm SOLD.

I hope they create an entire sports section that caters to socccer fans and other sports genres.

This is what Nintendo needs to do.

such a big N fan and you've never played the Griffey baseball games :P

I would check it out, I have a feeling it could be good.

Hmmm, it seems Nintendo are really on the ball here. They've suffered horrible because they suck at sports. With all the exclusivity deals raging it is becoming much less of an issue now. All they need to do is ensure whichever 3rd party has an exclusive releases their game on the Nintendo system, and then where possible make their own game. Rather than competing with 3rd parties they just have to compete with the other first parties. MS who have gotten rid of their sports division and Sony who have struggled.

This new first party game has been in development before Take Two announced their deal with the MLB players union. Especially since this game is due out this spring. Unless they were privy to Take Two's dealings before hand I don't buy your explanation.

Hey the N64 was doing alright back then and was ruling the charts on a daily basis.

right now in their state, its hurts me to see the greatest company in the world go down like this, therefore i'm in full support for any Title Nintendo brings out.

:lol

Good point.

I hope this isn't a knee jerk reaction coming from Nintendo. The fact that there isn't any images or gameplay details released...It could lead one to believe that this game will be WSB2k3 in disguise. Only difference is a new name and updated rosters.

Being sarcastic? The T2 announcement was a just 1-2 weeks ago, you really think Nintendo made a baseball game within that time?

First, I hope this game doesn't suck. Two, it would be an instant purchase if I didn't HAVE to play a franchise mode just so I could play a season. I'm tired of playing with franchise modes in all sports games, I don't care how much I should charge for hot dogs, I don't care if a player is sad or happy, I don't care if you're not getting enough playing time! I just want to play a full season, half a season, or what ever without worring about all that other mess. Give me an option! What happened with that?!

Hey, regardless of consumer backlash for non support of sports titles I think Nintendo should stick to their guns from here on out. They need to consistently keep releasing games like these so consumers can count on them year after year. It just doesnt make good business sence to start something like this and not plan on nurturing it into a franchise.

Well...their previous games always offered that, so I hope they make your dreams come true. Seriously, their a top flight baseball game developer, look at the reviews for WSB2k3.

Ah! Big Papi gets his own game! Very nice surprise, the biggest clutch hitter in playoff history.

You must be looking at the All-Star Baseball boxart. ;)

So who wants to bet we can unlock "Team Mushroom Kingdom" somewhere on this disc? I mean hell, they're already making a Mario Baseball, it wouldn't be too hard to throw him in there.

FUCKING RIGHTS.

I remember when Nintendo used to make some pretty good sports games circa the NES and SNES...and even N64. If this one is good, this'll help get more people thinking sports games on Nintendo systems.

...sadly, I won't buy this. At least, not initially. I think I'd have to commit seppuku if I was playing seasons with my beloved Yanks on a game with The Great Satan on the cover. :(

Since this is an exclusive game I am excited to see what kind of graphics Exile Interactive(2k series developer) can sqeeze out of the GCN. The 2k series looked great on Xbox after all.

A fully licensed MVP is still coming out this year. The Take Two deal doesn't start until 2006. Thanks for the crazy and entertaining idea that Nintendo are reacting to an agreement announced three days ago and getting Exile to develop a game in a matter of weeks!

Hey, I remember when Baseball was a pretty big deal on a Nintendo console. Look at this sales announcement from Acclaim back in the N64 days.

All-Star Outsells Griffey
Latest TRST data put All-Star ahead of the competition in July sales
By IGN Staff
August 12, 1998 - According to the latest TRST data, Acclaim's All-Star Baseball '99 outsold all other baseball games in the first half of July, including Nintendo's Major League Baseball Featuring Ken Griffey Jr., and Triple Play '99 and MLB `99 on PlayStation.

"With its cutting-edge graphics and outstanding gameplay, All-Star Baseball `99 is one of the best baseball simulations we've ever seen," said Chris Armstrong, buyer for Toys 'R Us. "It has pulled ahead in sales despite being slightly more expensive than the competition."
Despite its high sales in the first half of July, All-Star Baseball was not able to break into the Top 10 of best selling console titles.

Take Two's exlusive rights to MLB Players Association take affect in 2006. So I expect Nintendo to keep taking advantage of this by releasing this franchise year after year. Surely they can get solid sales out of this title by sticking to their guns. I mean Exile Interactive is a very capable development team. They deserve great sales and great hype by Nintendo. Advertise the heck out of this Nintendo.

Btw, how much did the WSB2K series sell on the Xbox before it went multiconsole with Sony? Heck someone throw in the mulitconsole sales in there too just for comparisons sake.

Man, how fucking long have people been saying that Nintendo needed an exclusive Baseball game? I'm glad that they are listening or coming to a realization over how these things really do help you.

I beginning to think that Nintendo is going to more competitve with the Revolution than what meets the eye.

Nintendo's off to a good start getting people outside their normal fanbase to pay attention to their system with Resident Evil 4 and Pennant Chase Baseball.

Now all they need is 1) a great exclusive multiplayer online first-person shooter, 2) an exclusive racing sim, 3) an exclusive football sim that's better than Madden, 4) and a game where all you do is go around an break laws and shit. Then they'll be all set for console dominance. :lol

This releases in two months, so let's see some screenshots, stat!

Oh, and a $30 price point would be nice too. I love me some baseball action, but am hoping to see a cheaper price on this game. I don't think I'll feel like spending $60 Canadian for a baseball title, no matter my enjoyment of the sport.

F-Zero has the potential! You've got a character who could garner mainstream appeal in Captain Falcon. Now place him in an environment a la Grand Theft Auto. Parade around mute city in you're racer, beat up/kill baddies to collect a reward. Use cash to upgrade racer and buy new weapons. A action/adventure racer with an rpg twist. Teh Mature!

Oh, and to stay on topic...I pray to God PCB doesn't play anything like Griffey because that series was a whole lotta ass.

I do appologise.

I think it's a very good move to put the Nintendo name into the actual game title. Might seem subtle, but if it turns out to be a quality game, then people will directly associate the Nintendo brand with a quality sports game, which can only help their credibility among those who may not previously been too keen on "Nintendo games". They should do the same with any and all sports games they make going forward (and hopefully there are more).

I wonder how Nintendo is going to handle the release of Mario Baseball(perhaps a Japanese exclusive, or has it been confirmed for a US release?), because I don't see Nintendo releasing 2 baseball games within the same month. Maybe they will release NPCB first and then Mario Baseball later in the early summer.

Yes and no. Yes, because it may sell the title to Nintendo faithfuls. No, because it may alienate those who don't think too highly of Nintendo. Of course, considering how GameCube is doing at the moment I doubt it matters much either way.

Good work by Nintendo for finally getting an exclusive sports game, if only if it was online. Now they should make an NBA game, an NHL game and a FIFA game.

Also, I think they should just buyout exile for baseball games.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Mario Baseball will be a mid-summer to early fall release.

I am definitely picking up both games then. Exile has a good track record so I have alot of faith in them.

That's true, but I'm thinking Nintendo has to stick at it, and come out with future iterations. If the titles are quality, word about them will spread as more people try it out (over multiple iterations) and people will overcome their aversion to the Nintendo name (if they have one). I'm not saying it'll build that confidence on day one, but if they stick with it, and have complementary games of similar quality in other sports, after some time they should become "established" and gain credibility among people who don't usually buy Nintendo games.

The trick is, doing it for the long term. They've had isolated success in the past with sports games, but they've never made a regular franchise ala EA's sports games etc. or built up consistent recognition or momentum. I'm not saying they should directly compete with EA in terms of having a yearly franchise for ALL sports, but in the sports they do choose to go with, they need to be consistent and regular.

I don't see how Nintendo can't be confindent enough to put their name in the title. The developer has proven track record in this genre--this isn't a Geist type of situation IMO.

I was just over at IGN looking at the WSB2K reviews on the Xbox channel. It says the developers for both games are Exile/Blue Shift. So where does Blue shift fit into all this? Are they one and the same with Exile? Also the newer ESPN baseball games are developed by Kush. Both the WSB2k games released on the Xbox got a 9.0 and 9.1 respectively.

Yeah, F-Zero has that appeal, but I think I have a much better franchise that could be Nintendo's "Grand Theft Auto":

Hogan's Alley!!

Imagine playing from two sides, good and bad. Good could be a Max Payne style game, the bad side could be the GTA style game.

OMG, Nintendo is actually trying. Its about time.

Is there any posibility that Nintendo could publish games like NFL2K6?

For one thing Take Two now owns the rights to the 2k namesake and another EA has the rights to the NFL brand. So this is highly unlikely.

Ha, you might be on to something here.

For those who don't understand that title...
The MLB is split into 2 leagues, the National and American, with 3 divisions in both, East, West and Central. So when two teams play in one area, they are usually split between the two leages, for example the Mets, Dodgers, and Cubs are in the National league, while the Yankees, Angels, and White Sox are in the American for their respective cities. The Pennant is the award for winning the league. The winners of each pennant then play eachother in the World Series. As someone has already stated, the title is similar to "The Road to the World Cup."

Nintendo doesn't have to release this and Mario Baseball at the same time. While it best to have a game ready for opening day, there is still the All-Star break and then the play-off that make for decent windows. I see this game coming out around opening day, but Mario Baseball could be released at anytime they wanted. My guess would be late August or September, since Mario will also sell for the holidays.

Yean but if I'm not wrong first party publishers can still... err... publish NFL and MLB games in both deals. Meaning that Nintendo and T2 could make a deal and allow Nintendo to publish NFL2K6. But off course I don't think Nintendo wants to get on EA's bad side.

Edit: I'm not sure if the NFL deal excludes 1st parties or not.

Not the NFL. EA owns the rights to the NFL for the next five years and I believe it excludes all competition (1st and 3rd parties.)

No I think that only applies to baseball with Take Twos deal.

Again... this is why I bet Nintendo had some part in that 1st party loophole.

On another note...Am I the only one surprised that Nintendo didn't seak out Ichiro Suzuki to endorse this game? Maybe it'll see a release in Japan with Ichiro gracing the cover.
Ortiz has actually gotten a lot of publicity in Japan this off-season because he played on the U.S. All-Stars team that went over there for some exhibition games against the Japanese All-Stars, where he stood out more than any other player, largely thanks to a 500+ foot homerun (think it was 545) that left everyone in the stadium amazed.

He seems like a great choice to me, growing star in U.S. baseball who's name will also be recognizable to Japanese baseball fans.

Nice to see the 2k3 guys get to make more baseball games, 2k3 was damn good. Here's hoping they deliver the same quality for Nintendo.
