Microsoft provided GamesBeat with the following statement.

"As the best-selling console in the U.S. in April, fans set record April sales and engagement for Xbox One last month,” Xbox marketing boss Mike Nichols said. “Xbox One console sales in the U.S. increased 63 percent in April 2015 compared to April 2014 and Xbox Live comparisons showed the number of active global users [Xbox One and Xbox 360] grew 24 percent. We are grateful to our fans for their passion and support and are looking forward to sharing more on the best game lineup in Xbox history at E3.”

We also reached out to Sony for a comment.

“We would like to thank fans around the world for their continued support of the PS4,” a Sony spokesperson said. “According to NPD, PlayStation continues to lead software sales for April 2015 and PS4 remains the cumulative sales leader in the US. We are looking forward to an amazing E3.”

Analyst comments:

“April 2015 hardware sales decreased by 4 percent due to the 55 percent decline in sales of [Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii] hardware,” NPD analyst Liam Callahan said in a statement provided to GamesBeat. “[Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Wii U] hardware sales were stable, and portable hardware increased by 36 percent.”

“Declines in hardware dollar sales were due to a decrease in average price of 4 percent, due to a drop in console hardware pricing,” said Callahan.

“For new physical console software, eighth-generation consoles sales grew by 200 percent in revenue, which offset declines from seventh-generation consoles of 62 percent, and portable declines of 32 percent,” said Callahan. “Overall, console software increased by 20 percent, leading to overall video game software growth of 13 percent.”

“If the top 10 software list was ranked on a SKU basis rather than a title basis, PS4’s Bloodborne, 3DS’s Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, and Wii U’s Mario Party 10 would make the list.”

“One possible reason for the soft April accessory sales is the shift in the Easter holiday in 2015. Most of this year’s Easter sales were likely to occur in March, while sales may have fallen into April last year, making for a poor comparison. (Easter occurred on April 5th in 2015 and on April 20th in 2014).”

“Gamepad sales increased by 27 percent due to the 83 percent increase in sales from eighth-generation gamepads. The best-selling gamepad SKU in April 2015 was the XBO WIRELESS CONTROLLER, with sales up by 56 percent.”

“Video game point & subscription cards had the highest sales within the accessories category; sales, however, declined from last April.”

Microsoft’s home gaming console finally outdid the PlayStation 4 last month.

The publisher has confirmed its Xbox One was the top-selling console in the United States. This comes from industry-tracking firm The NPD Group, which will release its full report for April later today. Since launching in November 2013, PlayStation 4 has continually dominated the sales charts, and so this is a big win for the Xbox One.

Microsoft provided GamesBeat with the following statement.

“As the best-selling console in the U.S. in April, fans set record April sales and engagement for Xbox One last month,” Xbox marketing boss Mike Nichols said. “Xbox One console sales in the U.S. increased 63 percent in April 2015 compared to April 2014 and Xbox Live comparisons showed the number of active global users (Xbox One and Xbox 360) grew 24 percent. Xbox One came in first in November/December 2014, too, right?

Like I said in the other thread, honestly surprised that Xbox pulled this off so close to the bloodborne release. That game should have had more sales momentum imo. No idea what happened there.

Somewhat interesting, although good for MS of course.

Was there anything that predicated this happening? I don't remember any special offers or games coming out that would have randomly boosted XB1 sales.

Huh, I wonder what caused Xbox to come ahead. I figured PS4 would be a shoe-in given that Bloodborne launched in late March.

Interesting. Did anything happen last month that would account for this? Price drops, bundles etc

Edit: almost word for word anti matter!

Believes Dragon Quest is a franchise managed by Sony
I wonder what caused this upset? Did any notable games come out last month for X1?

Somewhat of a head scratcher, did Microsoft drop something last month in order to garner this victory?

Bundles? Last game I purchased on there was Ori?

Never winter? Goat simulator?

Good stuff, I'm wondering what attributed the success. Was it pricing, games or simply marketing?

Well regardless!
