NPD Sales Results for March 2016

snip.

In 2 months the whole product itself could change! So it's obviously not rock and roll good times.

People keep saying last year's E3 can't be beat. But from a state of the industry, what is the future of console gaming, this is the most important and meaningful E3 perhaps in history. Cannot wait to see what insanity comes out of it.
Is "nothing happens" even still an option? Or are we through with this?

I am not fully convinced yet that XboxOne.5 will happen. They did not seem to be motivated to spend a lot of money in this division. And now over sudden a complete rework? That's truely expensive.
Spencer Phlip-Phlopping on his personal opinion about incremental consoles doesn't help either.

It's one hell of a prisoner's dilemma, isn't it?

PS4 graph is ok with the 3rd year after launch being the peak (I count 2013 like the launch year).

But Xbone lol it had the peak in the first year after launch... that is the definition of front loaded.

only really surprised to see that the division sold more on ps4, especially with xbox getting the expansions a month before ps4

Would it make a difference, are they going to turn the tables against PS4 and outsell PS4K as well. To me it's a why bother now, come out stronger later. Sony will still beat them and Microsoft are still relying on the Xbox One brand with bad memories for consumers. Make the best out of Xbox One at cheaper prices, get features up to scratch/Win10, support BC and come out stronger with a new Xbox brand later. Wouldn't they get nicer hardware next year rather than this year too.

i think its like the cod dlc where most ppl don't care at all. waiting 3 months or waiting 4 months, no difference. thats also why its so stupid some sony ppl made it seem like a big deal to celebrate over lol..

That rang a bell. Thank you and wikipedia.
Spencer really is deserving his salary. Should be hard defending corporate policies that might be against your own opinion or the good of your own division.

We'll see. It still is unknown who had the idea first, who has bigger interest (maybe the one who wants to sell 4k TVs) and who is faster and more concentrated in development.

Going by the straw man version of the logic, sure.

There are lots of factors that influence how well something sells. Why people, particularly WiiU fans, try to pretend competition isn't one of them I wish I knew.

But weren't the original posters that started the whole thing trying to pretend that "lack of competition" is the only reason?

While ignoring thngs like this:
This really has nothing to do with it.

- Splatoon is a new IP, so content expectations were different than an almost 30 year old franchise
- Splatoon had a solid single player component
- Nintendo started rolling out new content two days after the game launched
- Nintendo released a 30 minute Nintendo Direct specifically laying out, in great detail, the game's short and long term release strategy
- Amiibo
- Three Global Testfire demos for people to play before the game released (I think it might have actually been more, I can't recall).

Nintendo nailed Splatoon's launch and its success doesn't simply boil down to a light Wii U release schedule. If it did, every first party WiI U game of high quality would have sold millions of units.

Hence I said, going by this logic that lack of competiition is the end all be all.

PS4 is gonna peak next year in my opinion. Lower pricetag + psvr and a killer line-up and ps4k.

No way 2016 is the peak.

Not much flip flopping, if he goes incremental he's going big and not a small upgrade

Caught up ~ I was wrong! Thanks Cream (and Cosmic for the initial drops)

- Poor MLB constantly being forgotten in this thread. "Did Sony release an exclusive this month?" "Nintendo is the only one with exclusives this month!" over and over.

- Minecraft PS4 ahead of XBO. Is that the first time this happened?

- Happy for Twilight Princess. My second favorite Zelda. Sorry, Abdiel but not sorry :p

It happens every year, yet it charts every year, no matter the day it lands on. Truly phenomenal franchise.

What are you predicting?
New XboxOne upgrade, huge one, this E3?
Or small one? Or just a slim? Or nothing? Or completely new console in, let's say, 18 months?

Sounds like a slim and an upgrade, I dont see the need to mention incremental this year and so early if it wasnt coming this year, although if you had asked me day before he said it I wouldnt be expecting an upgrade this year. If there is a new Xbox console (upgrade) i'd think they will go big on power though

The Xbox One's performance in the US is a disaster to what it could have been if MS didn't fuck up.

The XB1 would be doing much more than what the PS4 is doing now.

MS were very aggressive with pricing the first year hence sales being pushed forward. Sony held off on their price cutting and the better sales this year reflect the fact that it is the cheapest PS4 in a Q1 period.

It isn't really surprising though since that bundle had no indication of really moving the needle.

A similar level debut in Destiny moved a ton of consoles. Maybe a Division themed console would have moved more than 40k, maybe the two franchises share an audience that stayed on PS4, and maybe we just are at a different point in the life of the consoles. What does seem clear is that 40k is a rough number.

For those of you who care about this sort of thing the 2016 investor meeting info from GameStop is pretty damn enlightening. Almost the entire thing focuses on selling phones and phone plans, selling collectibles / loot, expanding digital in their stores, and driving non gaming businesses.

Digital is taking over in a big way, and from everything I've heard / seen that really started sometime mid to late last year. I'm really curious where that will be in say 3 more years.

No, the Xbox One sold plenty well last fall despite the fact they were throwing a new bundle every week last fall and are still adding bundles like they just did with 500 GB White XBO Quantum Break bundle.

It didn't sell as well as the PS4 last fall but both consoles did well I just don't understand what the hell MS has been doing with all these unnecessary and confusing bundles.

One week it was a Gears of War: UE bundle, the next it was a stupid Kinect bundle, then a Fallout 4 bundle all with far varying price points from $300 to $500 which will confuse the shit out of a casual consumer.

And possibly add an Xbox 1,5 to that...
