NPD Sales Results for May 2013 [Up2: 360, 3DS Est, Software lowest since May 2000]

I just wanted some context on how bad this is so I looked up May 2007 numbers to see how the industry was doing 6 years ago. There were major releases but it still makes today's numbers look awful. I mean the DS did 423,000 units and even the PSP did 221,000. Crazy how far the market (especially handhelds) has crashed since then.
I don't know about the PS4's future. The Wii was selling 71,000 units this time last year and it's successor didn't light the world on fire. The PS3 is selling a little more but it also has lower overall sales. I know there's more to it then that but I'm starting to doubt that next gen will revitalise anything.

Microsoft has the potential to completely dominate the U.S. with the Xbox One and they are letting that slip.

Though what's the point of upgrading to Xbox One when it's not even BC with all 360 disc games & XBLA games? You might as well jump to PS4 on that front, especially when it's $100 cheaper than XBO & is more powerful than it.

Inflation adjusted, $400 is a fine price. Even $500 isn't crazy (that's about the same as the launch price of the Xbox 360).

No, the launch price of the Xbox 360 was $400.

Wasn't PS2 selling quite a bit better than this even after PS3 launched?

What happens when the one console future becomes a no console future? At this point, are all of console's hopes for the future riding on a one machine that is pretty much just a souped-up version of what's out there now?

Japan and China uses a unit system different than the west, they have a standard unit for ten-thousand, that's why they can use 8.4 to denote 84,000.

What's the incentive for retailers to keep stocking the hardware though? Not a big margin on that.

My local Best Buys just reorganized and the Vita is next to the PS3 accessories. There's always some space next to the headphones and remotes. :p

There's no market interest because there are no games. If they wanted sales, they would get their big IPs on the system. IPs like GoW and GT.

Also, if they'd rather not lose money on the system, why did they just announce Freedom Wars? Surely, development of new Vita games would have stopped by now if they planned to drop the system.

It's fair to say that Sony is letting the vita die on its own. All of their efforts are towards making the PS4 a success.

Personally I don't think they ever gave the system a chance. Amazing little system but flawed in the worst areas for a handheld.

Not that I'm defending Sony, but most of the hyped indie titles haven't released yet and won't until late summer.

Indie games will not push any hardware, sorry to burst your bubble. Sony deserves to sell 15k Vitas a month with the pathetic software support they give it, and that's not looking to change anytime soon. Put a fork in it.

This thread is moving unusually slow for NPD. I realize this is a shitty month but we're usually at like 10/20 pages by now I think. This is the first time I can keep up with the thread

No one wants to share info since it's terrible across the board, so not really much to talk/speculate with.

The PS2 was $129 though.

Good grief at Vita. And some people still think the system is viable. lol.

Colleagues are trying to convince me that Vita is going to make a comeback, but I personally don't buy it. Nobody wants it... at least, not in the US.

Any significant third-party publisher who supports this platform does so with the knowledge that it's a waste of money and resources. Unless Sony strikes a deal and compensates them, I'd be angered as a shareholder if my money was wasted on creating or even porting games for such negligible sales potential.

We hear publishers talk about not wanting to support Wii U because nobody is buying them, and I am okay with that... but Vita has been worse for a longer stretch of time. That's the platform to avoid.

Honestly the way things are looking my gut tells me the industry is going to continue to under perform substantially even with the ps4 and x1. Sure will see solid sales 1-4 months after their initial release but something don't smell right at the core of the industry...

My best buy doesn't have a vita section anymore either. the few games and hardware they have are just mixed in with PS3 accessories. Same with my local target.

Man oh man, I was also maybe thinking about picking up a Vita this summer to compliment my PS3 and future PS4, but with it putting out pitiful numbers like this doesn't give me much confidence for future big releases on the system outside of various Indie titles.

Wii U ain't doing too hot either, surprise surprise.

Assuming Wii U is ~33,000.

The rift between the GameCube and the Wii U continues to increase.

I'm seriously starting to wonder if the Wii U will ever have one month that sells better than the Gamecube. The difference grows every month. It will only get worse once the PS4/XB1 are out.

Something on a CoD level has to come out and shake up the industry.

Well, they are still announcing games for the Vita so they're not letting it die but I think they just don't care for the handheld segment all that much as long as it brings in sufficient revenue to be sustainable.

I have a gut feeling there's a revisioned Vita in the works. The current Vita is dead. But they wouldn't be hyping up the remote play so much if they knew it was going to be a dead system by the time PS4 comes out.

$149 slimmer packaged memory card is my bet. Not going to do wonders, but with the potential mega pS4 success it might pick up it up to at least the 60k-80k range.
