NPD Sales Results for May 2013 [Up2: 360, 3DS Est, Software lowest since May 2000]

Thanks, thats a pretty god damn good explanation for why more Gaffers aren't dropping hints.
Yes, but the NPD Group sucks anyway.

Look at Japan, we have three! trackers who post weekly data (lol) and they still run their business.

And US gets... a monthly All SKU Top10 ranking, that's a joke.

We will see but I fear that the PS4 and X1 will both sell like shit. $400 and $500 console surely are not the answer to what is happening right now.

What's happening right now is that everyone who wants a PS3/360 has one. You should be more worried about software than hardware. PS4 at least will sell fine at 399. You can't expect 8 year old tech to continually sell well forever. That's why the idea that this generation would last until 2015 before new consoles was ludicrous at best.

Would that really be downplaying though? If anything 34k would be "Good" since it would show something resembling stabilization.
Considering we already know it's > 30k, slotting it in at under 34 in a month where more games came out than last month could be considered downplaying, yes. That said I doubt he's that far off.. :(

Inflation adjusted, $400 is a fine price. Even $500 isn't crazy (that's about the same as the launch price of the Xbox 360).

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.

You must be new to this whole console generation sales thing. New console generations inject new hype and life back into the market, drive software sales back up, seize the minds of the public again. An 8 year gen has created something of total ambivalence for the current crop of games that are straining at the seams and require next-gen to shine.

It happens across absolutely every console gen we have sales for on record, and yes, the new consoles always cost quite a bit. PS4 though is coming in at quite a bargain price for being the most powerful box. Just $50 off the current WiiU sku that actually sells!

Pretty sure Americans at least have less purchasing power than in 2006 so inflation isn't the best measure of how to price something. That being said I think 399 is the price to be at and Sony did a really good job hitting it. MS will get their core fanbase at 499, but I expect PS3 like numbers once the holidays wear off.

I disagree. Everyone who wants a PS3/360 at the current price point in the US has one.

While I think a price cut should happen how much exactly do you think these consoles can sell? They are both approaching 80 million units sold and with the proliferation of smartphones, tablets, etc. taking away casual gamers you can't expect much more out of these 8 and 7 year old systems.

Well considering we haven't had a price drop for either console in a long time, it is kinda hard to say where there isn't any more potential customers for the consoles.

So when DS started it's run, how often was it beat by PS3 or 360?

EDIT: I said not #1 at first but then remembered a little thing called Wii.

Gamasutra.
Software revenue figure in GI.biz article is wrong.

Hardware: $96.0mm
Software: $175.1mm (this one was wrong)
Accessories: $115.3mm

I realize I'm probably the only one who regularly pays attention to those, but anyway. :)

I'm going to say this again after saying it in the pachter thread.... One bad month doesn't mean shit.

May was a relatively lean month, with June having many of the huge titles you'd expect to pull big numbers (AC, LoU, etc).

If NPD numbers look terrible for June, then it's time to be a bit more worried...

Thanks for the correction. :)

I wasn't aware of this. Jesus..I wondered why I came away from the demo preferring the old 'tank' style controls.

Yep, the aim is busted in all the versions of the remake. Ironically it's fine on the 3DS but that's because the 3DS's stick is more "digital" than "analog" like the console/PC versions analog is.

Not sure if this was posted already, but there was a Lego Batman DVD that came out last month. The marketing for that and the release of the Wii U version probably helped cause the slight bump needed to place 10th on the slow month sales list.

The ASP of the 360 suggests more people are still buying the higher end model over the 200 one. I don't think a 50 dollar price cut will do much to stop the downward trend. Maybe at 99 dollars because its more of an impulse buy but I don' think there is a huge barrier with the 360 at least. The PS3 need to be 199 a while ago but let's not forget that these machines are bringing in massive profits at this point. Like i said worry about software sales not hardware.

well microsoft did keep their console $300 for eight goddamn years, and sony kept it that price or more for slightly less time.

$300 was a good price for a ps3 back in 2008 or so. now it's just ridiculous.

Yea we need $100 consoles like last year. $150 maybe lol. They'll never drop them now. If they do they'll destroy the one and PS4.

Sucks when you need to replace a system too. My launch PS3 went finally in May and I had to drop 300 on a new PS3. FUCK that is a lot on a 7 yr old system. Why did I have to play last of us so bad.

Inflation only works well as an argument when wages increase to reflect it. $500 eliminates mass market from the equation and $400 is pushing the upper range of acceptable price points.

$300 continues to be the sweet spot for mass market adoption of video game consoles, regardless of their additional feature sets. Transition will slow after initial push from typical early adopter demographic ends.

I remember trying the demo out on my PC, I did not like the way it felt at all. And no laser sight? Come on now. I had no incentive to buy it for $50, when I already have the 3DS version.

Imagine is MS does that ISP subsidy thing $199 ppl where commenting on in another thread. Not that i think it will come to fruition.

There's likely demand for both boxes at a sub-$200 price point (for the premium 360 SKUs, i.e. with Kinect or with HDD).

The PS3 should see a lift or at least a stemming of decline with an eventual 32GB SKU I imagine - as has been the case with the 16GB SKU in Europe iirc.

My guess is that Sony rides out 399 for at least the first year and half of the PS4 gathering as many core gamers as they can and then price drops to 300 in 2015. Microsofts terrible decisions also probably have Sony breathing a sigh of relief as they probably thought MS would undercut them.

Enough so that they make up the money they lose? This is the real issue. I don't think that either console wouldn't get boost from a price drop, but demand is probably not so heavy as to make up for the big loss in profit here and at least with Sony probably losing a bit on the PS4 they needed all they can get. Having a PS3 closer to the PS4 price also probably helps PS4 adoption.

$187.6 million.

That's quite the mistake lol. Thanks.

I think it is safe to say with any console more people are buying the higher end model than the lower end. I'm talking about a $70-$100 price slash, that can definitely spur more sales than a $50 one which one can find easily with promotions/sales.

I believe Sony decided on the price before the conference. Well that was what I remember being posted on here.

Both systems can easily add 20M by the time they reach the $99 price point if they start go for a mainstream price soon. The PS2 is still well because in a lot of countries, the HD systems are way too expensive.

Well lets hope since both of these consoles aren't using anything groundbreaking when it comes to tech that we see the consoles lower their prices accordingly over time.

These parts will no doubt get cheaper much faster and we'll see both consoles turn a profit in 2014. Hopefully they price drop to match. The way in which price drops happened this console cycle was much too slow.

I agree they are too expensive, but I was just trying to explain the logic and why it made some sense to keep prices as high as they have been the past few years.

Yes, Yes, No.

Did you come to this conclusion from these rumors?

http://nsider2.com/forums/index.php/topic/601431-npd-may-the-king-is-dethroned/

Hardware:
3DS
360: 114k
PS3 < 100k
Wii U > 30k
Vita < 30k

Yes 3DS outsold 360, but we currently don't have numbers,

Notes of Interest:
RE: Revelations bombed on all consoles combined.
Software sales are the lowest since Mat 2000
All other systems sold below 100k
Injustice was the best selling game at ~100k

I still think that is $100 too high for mass market. Yes, the 4GB 360 is $199 but even people with half a brain know to avoid that like the plague.

This month was pretty bad in terms of releases and I'm curious as t whether next gen will get people who IMO just seem burnt out back into buying games.

3DS should be on top next month as well thanks to AC and maybe even the games coming out week lol.

I can see a scenario where the 360 actually falls to 3rd place for June, behind both 3DS and PS3. Then all streaks for MSFT will have ended.

That's not going to happen this time. These consoles aren't bringing anything new to the table.
