That's not going to happen this time. These consoles aren't bringing anything new to the table.

While I firmly believe the "best of times" for the console sector are long since over, I do think that there will be some sign of life once new hardware hits the market. I think that the core demographic is ready for new hardware and will jump at it. The bigger question is whether the mass market will follow in some/any capacity; I think there will be some transition there but with so many gaming choices for that demo, consoles are no longer the "must have" thing that they were last generation.

Terrible sales. Not sure what MS should do with the 360. Cutting to $149 may help sales, but I doubt by how much. Price cutting the Kinect bundle could move some units.
Sony, on the other hand, should cut to $249 at Gamescom and ride the exclusive wave until the end of the year and then focus on delivering great value over PS+ as an additional revenue stream.

I think Nintendo should just sell handhelds and get them to output to 1080p someday. That is the one console future I want. Their hardware is already not on par why not make a PSV style handheld designed to do TV gaming too.

yikes all around.

I wonder if this is the bottom falling out on current gen stuff.

Would REALLY hurt Sony since they're ramping up PS3 software wise right now.

Yup. There's going to be a huge contraction this gen. I'm thinking no more than 50 million combined for ps4/xbone.

You could be right, but I don't think the dip will be that large (that everyone does basically gamecube/og xbox numbers at best). There will be a pretty substantial dip, though, as the whole market is contracting (software makers/publishers development portfolios behind the scenes are also contracting)

You must be new to this whole console generation sales thing. New console generations inject new hype and life back into the market, drive software sales back up, seize the minds of the public again. An 8 year gen has created something of total ambivalence for the current crop of games that are straining at the seams and require next-gen to shine.

It happens across absolutely every console gen we have sales for on record, and yes, the new consoles always cost quite a bit. PS4 though is coming in at quite a bargain price for being the most powerful box. Just $50 off the current WiiU sku that actually sells!

people still call the vita a value for what it offers at $250, but no one's buying it. i don't think it's the memory card prices either.

the ps4 might have some strong initial hype, but i wonder if it will fizzle like the 3ds did. it would help if something like final fantasy xv hits year one (even end of 2014). i think the first year will be full of ps3/360 games and people wondering why they should upgrade, especially if they have to pay extra to enjoy something like destiny instead of you know, not doing that.

Vita has no games the market wants and neither does the Wii u for that matter. The industry will force at least one of the PS4/Xbone to be a success because their businesses will fail if not. Will there be a contraction this gen? Almost certainly, but predicting the death of the console industry off of overpriced almost decade old consoles seems far fetched

There are definitely folks that will buy a PS3 and 360 if they dropped the prices. I know people at work who just bought 360 in last couple years. Some people are trained to not buy a console until it's $200 or under.

Go Metro! Hoping they have a good deal on that during the Steam Summer sale so it sells like mad, that game deserves it.

And BF3 charting? What in the absolute hell is that all about? There wasn't a DLC or marketing push last month. Very out of the blue.

lol come on

People really need to take a step back on some of this stuff, yeah. Sales like that would place these systems at the pre-Nintendo levels of the Atari era, which is before worldwide mass production in all markets became a "Thing" (Atari didn't launch in Japan until after the Famicom). 150-200 million would represent a more realistic but still unlikely and very large contraction.

So far the ps4's hype only exists within the echo chamber of gaming forums. Xbone at most only gets negative hype in the mainstream media.

Compare that to the lead up to the current consoles. It was a frenzy back then. Even the 360 was the must have item when it came out. The 360. Successor to the failed Xbox. Think about that for a moment. I'm just not sensing any buzz for any of these new consoles.

This gen was the biggest one ever in terms of hardware sales. When all is said and done we will be talking about ~300m home consoles sold.We are six months away from launching. It's way too early to say anything.

By the way, we are also probably not getting price drops this year.Ridiculous!

i'm not predicting the death of the market. i'm just calling into question the wisdom of the ps4 being an insta-success because '$400 is pretty good for whatcha get!'

Yeah, the PS4 will probably outsell the X1 and WiiU (and maybe by a decent margin as well), but I have to wonder how successful it's really going to be. People seem a bit sick of the same old games but that's all anyone is putting out other than these new kind of an MMO but kind of not games (like Destiny and The Division) that I'm not sure are going to see a ton of success.

I think you're looking at it far too pessimistically. 50 million combined is far too low. Lowest combined sales I would say is likely to be 90 million.

I completely agree both need a big time price cut. They should do it now and not be forced after retail forces them to. The PS3 should be 179.99 or less by now and the base 360 with out hard drive 99 dollars,149.99 with harddrive and kinect bundle 199.99. The prices are just way to high for 7-8 year old machines we have seen it since Xmas. It is only going to get worse as the months go on.

Wow at DKCR 3D! None of my friends (and I) are interested in the game, yet it's #3 last month. Makes me want to get DKC:TF.

It depends. Sales have collapsed before the new consoles are out which iirc is unprecedented. Normally the old console still sells well when the new console comes out giving a seamless transition between the two gens. It all depends whether people will find a new outlet for the experience or the visceral violence and gore will bring them back.

Yeah, I'm getting kind of anxious because the last time there was this much hype for, well, anything... was the Vita after they revealed the price.

It'll be funny if things don't look much better next June after the two new consoles and all the new games launch. Funny in a sad way that is.

But again, you are forgetting that the PS2 was priced at $129 in the year where the PS3 was released. So, you cannot compare the PS2 sales to the 360/PS3 sales. Even less so when you consider that sales are divided between these 2 systems during this generation.

In addition to that, the PS3 + PS2 sold 16.5M during FY2012. So, the PS3 is still selling well.

This will make for a long, hot, barren summer for consoles. Any bump that PS3 gets from The Last of Us will be short-lived, 360 has little in the way of significant sellers til August, and WiiU can't get out of its own way.

No price drops means few will jump in on the hardware side and many will spend their disposable incomes elsewhere. It's a missed opportunity where a band-aid like a price cut could have done a lot of good.

We are more than likely going to get a repeat of the PS2 generation but witha lot less total sales.

What are the chances that State of Decay is the number one seller in June? lol

It's digital...so I'm guessing it won't be in the report? Right?

We could add it in...is it over 500k already? Nearing it/passed it??

Price drops not going to do much for software in this market. Some bumps in hardware but not seeing a lot of return for software at this rate. MS waited way too long for that next price drop.

Yeah...I totally disagree. I'm surprised how much buzz there is so far before the marketing machines for Sony and ms have started.

-Lol @ Fuse. Everyone called that shit. I expect Insomniac games to go F2P after Sunset Overdrive bombs as well. Ted Price is slowly burning that company to the ground.

-The more surprising bomb was Resident Evil:Revelations. Wow, i thought it was a sure bet for #1. Capcom killed the franchise with the shittastic RE6/ORC combo. Anyways, cant' wait to pick it up for $10 in the upcoming months :).

-Console sales are horrible, but that has to do with the shitty prices. $300-$350 in their 6th and 7th year in the market, are you kidding me. As someone was arguing in the previous page, they might lose some profit overall by lowering the selling price, but they can't complain since they took that into consideration. NPD never takes that into account when writing their shitty PR's. I believe a $150 PS3/Xbox 360 combo could do wonders this holiday season. It makes a lot of sense but it won't happen, cause companies are greedy.

-Wow @ Injustice. Sure, it might had sold enough units to land in the top spot in a slow month, but it's a fighting game. We barely see one top the charts for 2 months in a row. Grats to Netherrealm. They deserve all the success they can get.

Sales of video game console hardware and software were down 20 percent and 4 percent in terms of dollar sales, but the portable category showed significant growth in 2000. Portable software sales rose 26 percent in dollar terms and 28 percent in unit terms. Portable accessories were also a stromg performer in 2000, up 56 percent in dollars and 76 percent in units compared to 1999. According to NPD, the continued growth of the portable category was driven in part by the popularity of the Pokemon games, illustrated by the fact that four of the top 10 selling game titles for the year 2000 were Pokemon Game Boy and Game Boy Color.

And this is AFTER the PS2 launched. People need to stop claiming that the sky is falling. I've been following game sales discussion for well over a decade now and we see the same thing every generation, and the same predictions of some sort of massive contraction due to whatever the latest buzz word is.

Where is your proof? I'm not sure what we can glean from your spider sense not tingling. PS4 hype only exists within the echo chamber of forums? The Xbox 360 moved units at a similar clip to the PS3. It wasn't a must have until well into its cycle as sales continued to improve. How much frenzy can there be for a system if the Wii blew by your lead? There were brief shortages and I don't recall the 360 exceeding Microsoft's internal expectations. You're painting a rosy picture for last-gen's early days.

theres months and months straight of articles about declining sales in the year after 360 launched aswell

Yup, exactly. And after the PS3's initial failings we had even more, and yet this generation saw growth, continuing the trend which we've seen ever since video game consoles came into existence in the 1970's.

I'm not saying we will see growth by the way, just that if there is a decline, it will be a very modest one.

i think a lower bound for the ps4 will be how the 360 did in its early days where it had a rather average numbers of units sold but still pushed a bunch of software and had a crazy high attach rate

500K WW, NPD is only NA.

Technically it didn't and hasn't made it out everywhere, the majority of the front loaded sales were NA when I last checked...but it's been a few days.

Has it finally made it out everywhere? I know it's only been out what 2 1/2-3 weeks...right.

I need to check in on that thread.
