I thought the story was thread worthy because I feel that Ted Cruz, deep in my heart, will end up with the Republican nomination.

This guy scares me far more than Trump because he can take an argument, like saying the sky is green, and actually convince otherwise smart people that the sky is green.

Anyway, this is a part of a series of interview topics NPR has done with Ted Cruz. This one is about climate change and I just finished listening with my jaw dropped. Had to post this here as a way to vent, lol.

The story:

Cruz is the most deeply cynical, exploitative politician I've ever seen.

He manipulates the fuck out of our nation's dumbest people and they're too goddamn stupid to realize it.

Pretty much all Republicans think that the science doesn't support climate change. It doesn't matter if you tell them that 98% of scientists have come to a consensus on it. They basically just say "nuh uh" and "back in the whatevers they used to say there was global cooling like we were gonna have a massive ice age and that never happened" or whatever to shrug it off.

Over Thanksgiving I heard a relative say that NASA was "done" because they had new evidence that the ice caps were actually expanding. Like boom, discussion over. Finally we have proof that global warming is a lie.

Nevermind that they suddenly believe NASA now that it "supports" (lol) their opinion.

Just like that google search sketch on vaccines.

Google: There are one billion well researched, unbiased articles and papers that says Climate Change does exist, but there's this one that was clearly biased, manipulated, and poorly researched that says it doesn't.

Cruz: I knew it. (Takes the poorly researched paper)

He has a preacher-like quality to him that makes him seem even slimier. Like, it almost seems like he knows what he's saying is bullshit and he's deviously misleading people, which would be ridiculous.

Like, he has to have the conscience of an ant, because he parades about to Evangelicals and then says blatantly slimey things to appeal to people. He can't believe his own lies, you know?

That's an insult to ants everywhere. Ted Cruz is a God damned monster.

I suggest everyone actually listen to the clip in the OP to see how far gone he is. Cruz thinks global warming is a liberal conspiracy and that liberal politicians have bought off 98% of scientists so that they can have money and power. Then he acts incredulous that someone could even think that there's moneyed interests in denying global warming. What a sack of shit.

Jesus christ I don't understand Ted Cruz. He's a very, very smart person, but the stances he takes, the opinions he has. I don't fucking get it.

Is he just some self-serving egomaniac willing to say whatever it takes to be popular? Would he watch the country burn so long as he was the one in the lime-light? Is he just plain evil?

The whole realm of science issues - it's why I couldn't bring myself to vote GOP, even if all issues of human rights were resolved.

When a party can't acknowledge basic scientific realities of the world we're operating in, it has a fundamental problem. I actually have older Republican relatives who work in science and engineering fields, and if there's one issue set that makes them squirm when I mock them, this is it.

But we have to keep those tax cuts comin'..

The worst part is, he's actually pretty good at dancing around questions and avoiding certain words so he sounds smarter.

Notice he avoids ever saying the word conspiracy himself, although he creeps right up to the edge of it (directly asked, he is careful to never say he believes it's a conspiracy). He over-states the global cooling thing to make it sound like it was scientific consensus once, but drops it as soon as he realizes Inskeep was already aware (it was only a few papers). When quizzed on the topic of evolution, he avoids saying he denies evolution happened, but also says that he questions all science "like any good scientist should" - avoiding saying anything that might counter his base, while also coming off as intelligent.

Despite having no more substance than others who share his views, he gives the impression of someone who is intelligent and cares deeply about the impact on the common person.

In a real debate, hopefully, he would lose horribly because he's avoiding any engagement on topics he doesn't want to talk about. In an interview, he comes off as self-assured and even intelligent without ever talking about the issues in the same sense Inskeep does - it's like he's from a parallel universe.

He's a puppet. Unfortunately the industries at large have a lot of puppets on their side

The very first time I saw Cruz, maybe in the late 2000s, I thought "wow he looks like a McCarthy impersonator!"

That first impression has proven pretty prescient.

Ted Cruz funds a way to make himself even more unappealing. It's almost like he's trying to out Trump, Trump. Who can lie the most. The base doesn't even care, they just want to be told what they believe is right. These two have the perfect strategy for the crazies.

Ted Cruz comes across as very slimy to just about everyone I ask about him so hopefully that would translate to rejection in a general election. I hope...

Elmer Gantry isn't such a enduring stereotype for nothing.

My assessment as well. It's really insidious, especially given he's gone 100% tin foil on the conspiracy angle. He ducked mightily when Inskeep suggested that this means many other nations have joined in on the US liberal "approach" (avoiding saying conspiracy as Cruz has just pointedly done).

Still don't understand how a Canadian born man can run for president. I hope that's brought up and it brings him down.

Also he sounds like a dick.

Cruz has based his entire political career around manipulating and taking advantage of the crazies. The man is an evil genius that wants to use the fears of the nations dumbest to take control.

What the fuck is Cruz talking about with ad hominem? Does he even know what that phrase means? Could tell that Inskeep was frustrated with that, but I suppose thought that it wasn't the time (or he didn't have the time) to get into it.

I listen to this on the way to work this morning. It made me so angry that I drafted Facebook posts in my head while driving to post later so I can show how angry I was. About ruined my morning.

For real. The misuse of "ad hominem" is at a peak. It's getting tossed around like confetti at the most minor, non-personal arguments. It's treated like a "get out of rational debate free" card.

I heard it this morning, as I was getting up, but I was too groggy.

He mentioned something about the little people and how his mother was poor. Did he explain the relationship between this and the issue of climate change? Is there a relationship at all?

I read a post, I believe on GAF even, that Ted Cruz looks like he's wearing another person's face as a mask, and I could not agree more. Dude is just creepy.

I want to high-five Inskeep for his admirable restraint and patience.

So many conservatives fancy themselves as tough realists, yet go silent when you ask them about their party's stance on climate change.

So glad people are starting to see these things in him. Ever since he rose to an elected official, I've seen him as a manipulating, cynical, slimy, pandering, "good politician. I guess it bothers me even more that he is one of my senators. He gets his presence from his Dad, who was a pastor.
