Nvidia’s RTX 5050 GPU starts at $249

Yeah, it's too bad no one wants to make a cheap gpu that's only powered by the PCIe slot. I have an old office PC sitting on my bench that I'd put a 5050 in if it was lower power.

I think what happened with that is that IGPs are very suitable for everything but gaming... and the OEMs are comfortable putting the power connectors in so going over 75 W was fine.

That's exactly what I mean. This card exists strictly for iBUYPOWER to rip people off with it.

It's better than an IGP...

Dell, btw, offers these options currently in their "Dell Tower Plus"

3050 6 GB (+ $200)
4060 (+ $350)
4060 Ti 8 GB (+ $450)
5070 (+ $550)
5080 (+ $1050)

I mean, you could demand that they only offer the 5070 and 5080... but they aren't gonna do that.

I think the leading 3 and 4 make it less bad. At least they don't think they're getting the newest generation stuff. Which yeah I know, technically or whatever. But cmon. Everyone knows this is where the majority of these cards will go. At a higher ratio than the upper trims.

Damn, that's the kind of card I'd buy just to have a dedicated gpu and a hdmi output in htpcs I used to build for myself/family for like 100$ CAD. Crazy times.

I paid $110 for a 750ti. That wasn't THAT long ago and that card would play anything you wanted at the time.

slower than 4060

I was expecting it to be only as fast as a 3060. So almost matching a 4060 is not bad.
But I bet that in games that use more vram, this 5050 will crumble, while the 3060 will do a lot better.

Pretty much the norm now.

4060 slower than 3070
4070 slower than 3080 12GB
5070 Ti slower than 4080
5070 slower than 4070 Ti
5080 slower than 4090
5050 slower than 4060

And so on.

It used to be you could always expect series to jump up a full tier. Not anymore.

PC game devs need to accept that they have to make games that work well with 8 GB of VRAM for the foreseeable future. It is not going away anytime soon if ever
the problem is that there aren't many "PC game devs"

They develop for consoles as the baseline and scale up (or down) appropriately

If the majority of PC cards are running 8gb and consoles are running 12-16 gb, the game will just run like shit.

We should have dumped 8gb of VRAM years ago, Nvidia just keeps it around like a diseased dog for reasons instead of taking it out back

We really need gaming APU's to fix this mess. If they were like $100 more than the equivalent 8-core with small graphics, it could fill this huge gap in the budget range. Plus it could be on integrated boards and get prices a little cheaper, even.
AMD the only one trying that shit, and right now their performance isn't as good as it could be. performance is equivalent to a 6500xt which is a bad card putting it lightly, esp considering what they came up with on ps5 pro comparatively

Another bad card for this line-up. Even with Nvidia you'd be better off with the 5060ti, at least that has an option you can get with 16gb of vram.

Intel B580 ($50 more, 12gb vram) and AMD 9060xt ($100 more for 16gb vram) aren't much more, and significantly better value than this.

The consoles have 12-16 GB of RAM which is shared for all uses though

PC's have separate memory pools for system RAM and VRAM

It really shouldn't be an issue if the dev isn't terrible or lazy

It doesn't bother me that the 5050 exists, something like this should exist, it bothers me that it's $250.

I know GAF isn't a fan of the second hand market but I can (and already have) get a RTX 2080Ti for around the same price and get a 2080 Super for cheaper.

The market prices are just terrible right now.

Yeah, 5050 8GB should be a $200/€200 card, period.
