Report: Nvidia is cancelling RTX 50 Super Series because of AI demand

Damn it, i was waiting for these to upgrade. There's been some decent deals on the 5080 lately, but the amount of RAM gives me serious pause. I'm upgrading my 3070 because not hitting the VRAM limit is a pain. The last thing i want is to spend a bunch of money on a new card that is going to potentially cause me the same headache. If it just had 18GB....

Glad that AMD backtracked on driver updates and FSR4 Int8 injection is a thing. Should keep my 6900XT chugging along until consoles get decent RT hardware.

I'd honestly consider a Linux system using Bazzite or CachyOS with that GPU.
The HDMI 2.1 issues have had me return to Windows every time I have tried. Plus gamepass.
On my fanless Intel miniPC based 16" 'portable' where it should be even more of a no brainer I have never been able to get Moonlight to stream smoothly under Linux unfortunately.

yeah, I hear ya. I have living room Windows 11 IoT LTSC PC setup as close to a bazzite like experience with my 5070 Ti, and it's fine. I've gotten used to the bullshit, but I still hate it.

The HDMI issue is easy to solve, just get a Displayport to HDMI adapter and use that.

Or use an Nvidia card. They work pretty damn well on Linux these days.

I thought they were cancelling or delaying it due to the crazy price hike for 3g ram modules which would make the product to expensive for minimum gains. Either way, AI is still the issue.

A DP to HDMI adapter isn't good enough. You lose necessities like VRR and sometimes HDR. I was able to get it to work from time to time, but it never stayed working.

As long as you're not playing DX12 games. nvidia still hasn't gotten the DX to Vulkan translation at anything great.

I wish all developers would exclusively use vulkan and ditch DX12.

All the gamers in the world both PC and Console need to get together and build our own chip factory, for games hardware only.
Everyone buy a share and everyone gets chips, AI servers will get shipped all the defective chips to mix into their normal stock forcing them to waste time sorting it out.
Something like a socialist chips manufacturing system, amiright? Next thing you'll tell me, we need to take Nvidia's factories to supply the cards for ourselves :pie_roffles:

Same here. The 5070 Ti super seems like finally a decent option to get more than 16gb of vram (24gb there) without spending the price of a 90 GPU.
I'm still with a GTX 1080, don't know what I will do... :messenger_grinning_sweat: :messenger_loudly_crying:

My 3080 10GB seemed to hit the VRAM limit at 4K in STALKER 2, Alan Wake, and Indiana Jones. Where it would run ~60fps but then walking into certain areas would lead to massive stutters--down to single FPS in STALKER 2's case.

This info is from AI, so take it with a grain of salt:

In an RTX 5080, the estimated NVIDIA cost of 16GB of VRAM is $40-80. Adding 8GB of VRAM (via 3GB modules instead of 2GB) would cost them an additional $40-80, turning into ~$100-200 additional MSRP. That's WAY lower than I thought. I am once again persuaded to think NVIDIA is intentionally hamstringing their VRAM to pull out as a last resort when they can no longer find performance gains via GPU die/DLSS improvements.

Why don't we just start our own country too that does this. We'll call it The Republic of Gamers.

Okay take the $3000 you were going to spend on a graphics card and invest in nvda and by the time the 6090 comes out you can pay for it with the profits.

The problem is that when the bubble bursts everyone who invested on NVDA will lose copious amounts of money and if unlucky enough it might never recover

Does SteamOS not work on nVidia? Doesn't work because of the closed source driver?

Compatibility issues, Linux doesnt run games well on Nvidia cards.

This is why we needed High End competition from Intel and AMD

I was parroting this same talking point up until a week ago.

Then I installed CachyOS on a whim.

I have a 5090. I see very little difference between performance on Windows and Linux in every game I've tried.

Granted, if you want to play games that use kernel-level anti-cheat (Battlefield, etc) you won't have a good time on Linux, but for everything else, it's just fine with an Nvidia card.

Still haven't found a game that makes me really want to upgrade from my 6900XT at this point... I refuse to buy UE5 trash at this though so that definitely helps.

So you will spend close to a fortune for an fps increase in single digits? Bruh, you are part of the problem. You monitor your gf's orgasm time as much as you do with your pixel counters?

He's part of the problem because he decided to skip a gen and a half until something with enough RAM to be a legit upgrade comes out for a decent price? If you have a 3070 and you rushed out for a 40 or even 50 series with hardly more RAM, sounds like a bigger problem to me. Or if you just fell for the squeeze of the bad cards and teched directly to 5090

It doesn't run DX12 games well yet. Vulkan and DX11 (or below) run reasonably well actually. In some cases better on Linux. DX12 games still are about a tier lower, but Vulkan and nvidia are supposedly making progress.

At least according to this:

If the Super series actually is cancelled and AMD release a upgrade with 5080 performance and a significant VRAM boost next year, i'll probably sell my 5090 and get that new Radeon instead.
I love the 5090, but it's a bit overkill for gaming only. I don't dabble in AI-stuff, so could easily sell it and get another nice card (and a bit of cash).

If this is really a problem with the 3 GB chips, AMD's going to have a problem too.

Yeah either that or Bazzite. Still it will take some time until I move to Linux.

I'm going to research a little more than that but I'm going to move to Linux eventually anyways

Also I'm assuming Kernel level also includes Denuvo?

I also have a 5090, and would like to have a SteamOS-experience on my desktop, but have avvoided it because of the "Nvidia sucks on Linux"-rapports. I don't play any multiplayer stuff, so this sounds good.
That being said, I have zero issues on Windows 11 after disabling all bloat, background apps/services, game bar, copilot +++ using winUtil.

I didn't have any issues on Windows 11 either but decided to install Cachy on my HTPC (the one with the 5090) because I had heard that the Nvidia experience was much improved.

I wasn't disappointed and decided to keep it.

That said, I do have another m.2 drive in that PC that I could reinstall Windows on, if needed for dual boot.

You got any perceivable increase in game performance after debloating?
