Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

I'm interested to know the power wattage difference between the 970 and the 8800GT that i already have. Also how about the performance difference?

Don't ask why i have this card in a 4670 PC, i just do :P

Third times the charm. One more time asking :)

Now with all the information we've got (do we have good benchmarks?) and prices, I'll again pose the question, which card would be best to go with?

I was originally looking at the 980 but the 970 has seemingly come out with very surprisingly good performance for its value. I was even thinking of looking at the 780Ti if it came down in price, but from some charts I've seen that really doesn't seem to be a good option.

So yeah, coming from the 560Ti, which card would be best to go with? (or I suppose, what would justify the extra $250 for the 980?) Again, I'm not thinking of SLI and I'd probably be running most games at 1080p max.

Thanks!

EDIT: Oh, and where's the best place to buy these things anyway? Newegg? Or are there better suppliers?

I'm in the market to build my first PC in years. Seems like the 970 is the way to go? I have to admit, hearing all of you talk about buying two of them sounds enticing, especially at that price, but then I realize I'm going to be gaming at 1080/60 and I talk myself down.

The 970 uses about 40% more power, but delivers like 10x the performance of the 8800GT. It would be a decent upgrade. lol

The 970 seems like a good bet with your requirements. It's going to smoke every game at 1080p. The 980 isn't really worth it unless you've got money to blow. I buy most things from Amazon these days. They have amazing customer service.

Curious, any idea of an exact release date for these cards?

Andy from Nvidia said either midnight PST or 6AM tomorrow morning.

If you have a stock clocked 4670K, shame on you.;P

I've been publicly shamed several times and my family wants nothing to do with me :< in my defense I've been waiting for THE time to overclock, not even Dolphin + SMG made my 3.8 Ghz sweat, besides, my 750 ti will be a bottleneck.

Shame about my Seasonic 550w tho :(, maybe I'll upgrade to a CM V750 or a Rosewill Hive

970 looks extra-tasty. But I'm not playing any PC games that need this kind of power.

Hmmm.

edit: oh wait, I'm going to get Star Citizen. Never mind. Any benchmarks showing results for that game?

Thank you so much for your input! :)

I'm still amazed at the shockingly low TDP of the 970 at only 145 W. I was expecting to have to go up since the 560Ti didn't run too much consumption at 170 (I didn't push mine hard like total OC).

At the very least, the 970 would make a great card to hopefully do good until those fabled next generation of chipsets come out.

Damn, I was blown away by the 970 when I read reviews, building my new PC (gonna go with Gigabyte Windforce) with that and I'll leave room to SLI if I feel the need to.

One thing I'm confused about is "HDMI 2.0", do I just use the same cable I have now? By plugging into the 2.0 slot on the 970 I get access to it? Uneducated question I know haha, I'm not super tech saavy.

$329. $329 For a GPU that matches or exceeds the GTX 780 or a R9 290?? I can hardly believe it. That is such a amazing price on the 970.

That 145W TDP would be perfect for me too. I'd never have to worry about a thing power wise with my mere 520W PSU. Seems like a 970 would be a great card for using an Oculus Rift as well with that 4 GB VRAM and "VR Direct" (curious to see just what that does!).

Definitely looking forward to picking one up someday.

SSJ2 to SSJ4.

Honestly the 980 is a decent upgrade, but I'm looking at that 970, that one is a killer at that price.

Nice, sounds like I know what to do when I have some money then.

I'll probably get this and upgrade my memory from 4GB to 16GB, leave everything else in my rig alone.

Some 980 custom cards are out in Oct, 970 customs and 980 reference today/tomorrow.

Hmm, I'll probably end up waiting for the custom cards then.

Anyone think my i7 2600k , could handle a GTX970? I don't want my cpu to be a bottleneck.

I currently have a GTX670 and its starting to show its age in some of the new games @ 1080p

Aye, depends on the webstore. Some are going live at midnight, some at 6am. Set up that Reload Every plugin :)

I have a 2500k and I'm probably gonna upgrade to 970 from 6950 xfire setup. I'm not really concerned about a cpu bottlekneck personally.

There's not much better to even upgrade to if you wanted to, lol. Your 2600K is golden (but look into overclocking it if you haven't yet)... or everyone's CPUs are screwed.

So these are the drivers that cut support for older cards right? Are we going to get some more info on this? People seemed hyped that this would bring some performance improvements.

Bottlenecks aren't an either/or thing, and can exist on multiple parts for different reasons.

In very very loose terms, your GPU creates an average. The CPU determines how consistent that is. There's lots of exceptions to that, but it's a good start to at least breaking the usual notions of these things.

So for this, what should I get? 970 or 980? I don't plan to go to 4K, so I'm sticking with 1200p for at least a couple of more years.
I want to be able to play every game on native 1200p with all the bells and whistles (expect maybe The Witcher 3 ubersampling).
Is 970 enough?

I know it's bad to wait for upgrades but these cards are kinda underwhelming to me and with no games I want on the horizon that are graphically intensive, I think I'm going to hold out for the 16nm generation of GPU's.

Since your monitor is only 60hz, a 970 should do just fine. It's also cheap enough so you SLI it down the line for future games or higher res monitor, although you would also have to upgrade your PSU at that point.

This thing is going to go on sale as soon as I go to bed, isn't it...

What card are you going for, 980? What are you running now, a 780 6GB or Titan?

Can we expect another line of cards next year when the consumer version of the occulus rift comes out? Or is that completely unpredictable?

If I have to stay up all night, I stay up all night. Not that I'm overly happy about it, but I missed out on having a ROG Swift monitor already because they went on sale when I was asleep, and I don't want to repeat that whole affair (the monitor remains on back order).

There will definitely be a Maxwell refresh "Ti" or other high end variant by the time Oculus CV1 comes out.

Love the installation bit :D

My body is weak and although I got my 2GB EVGA GTX770 SC for super cheap I'm probably gonna upgrade to similar 4GB GTX970 setup.

I currently have i5-2500k non-overclocked, but I'm currently looking at a new mobo with i7-2600k on it at an auction and if I'm lucky I'll get it for cheap. If not I'll finally overlock the 2500k and wait for the Broadwells to come out.

Big Maxwell might launch, yes. Think Titan 2, 1080, 1080Ti and 100x refresh for the 90x series. If they're going with that naming scheme.

Yeah, 970 is plenty for that res at 60Hz.

Wasn't going to upgrade my 670 for another year but I don't know now. 970 is more powerful but uses less electricity. I'll have to see € price before deiciding though.

Why are the new cards 900 series and not 800? Weren't last years models the 700 series?

Ok, thanks. I think I will hold out til then (I'm trying to get this vr thing to work flawlessly when it's here... if that is even possible)
