Nvidia says they’re not a gaming company anymore as AI drives record-breaking revenue

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

NVIDIA has evolved from gaming

In its earnings call, the company said it has "evolved over the past twenty-five years from a gaming GPU company to now an AI data center infrastructure company."

This should be a good time for AMD to come in and take marketshare. The 9070XT is a great GPU. They need to build off that momentum. At least have something comparable to a 5090 or better next generation.

Some people hasn't been following AMD's movements lately it seems.

Haven't checked but i'd be surprised if AI doesnt make them more money than gaming GPU's already

High-end GPU market is messed up.

I keep seeing talks about 5090 in context of AI, but who even buys it for such a use case... 72GB VRAM rig (three 3090's) costs less than a single 5090.

Didn't they say almost the same thing two years ago?

Except that AMD really wants that sweet AI $$$ as well, so they are going to be doing everything possible to go Nvidia route.

Meanwhile Intel may become one. Intel next GPU, Celestial, will be made with their own foundry instead of TSMC. Prices will be competitive.
Didn't Nvidia invest $5 billion into Intel and they are planning to do projects together?

Edit: And AI is priority for Intel as well.

Edit: Personally I think customized ASIC for training/inference from likes of Google, MS, Amazon, etc… is what is going to start eating into Nvidia's market share.

Bingo

AMD will throw gaming under the bus for the kind of AI contracts that Nvidia is scoring.

Just in 2026 Nvidia is expected to make more in revenue than AMD's entire evaluation

Fuck man.

Me too.

Goddammit me too. I think I'm starting to actively dislike many aspects of gaming culture and the gaming industry, to the extent that it's affecting my enthusiasm for the hobby in general.
You can always stick to emulation, older games, indies, etc…. There is a ton of amazing games you probably never played and a whole lot of cool retro hardware to get into, even if it's through FPGA or emulation.

AAA is not the entirety of gaming. And hell, you can play vast majority of AAA games on something like 9060XT or 9070/9070XT very well.

Hell yeah, I've got a good retro setup for just that purpose my friend. The industry as it is now is just so goddamn unappealing.

Lines being drawn in the sand, agendas everywhere, biases, manipulation, conflict, dishonesty, greed......

Over virtual toys. Let's be honest here, that's what our hobby essentially is. Yes, we have some ascendant experiences in this medium, and it's pure joy to experience these journeys, but these are virtual toys at the end of the day. I just don't see how it got to this point.

I remember getting beaten up and thrown in lockers when I was a kid for always having the latest Gamepro on my person for reading material, and I remember wishing other people could see what I loved about gaming so much and stop bullying me over it.....I'd honestly love to go back to it being obscure like that. I didn't realize at the time that, bringing the awful people who constantly made fun of me and hurt me into the hobby would eventually result in the hobby being unrecognizable from what it was, and what made it so great, at least in the AAA scene and quite a lot of the AA and indie scenes as well.

Eh, just kind of venting into the ether, ignore my thoughts.

Hot take: I don't care. And neither should you. The AI bubble will likely burst, flooding the markets with used GPUs and bringing things back into equilibrium. And even if that doesn't happen then the high cost of entry will hopefully be a good deterrent for the industry to calm the fuck down with the stupid meaningless chasing of graphics over gameplay.

Is AI silently killing gaming?
Money rules and if there is more money in AI for both Nvidia and AMD, then who's going to be focused on improving gaming hardware? ARM? Intel?

I totally get it, the gaming hobby is now a huge business bringing in many $billions so big Corpos are involved, private equity is involved and more. So enshitification hits a lot of things around gaming.

Throw in current political climate, culture wars and everything in between and it's a bit of a shit show.

But on the other hand, there are more great games than ever, retro community is huge, and backlogs are tremendous.

You just need to step away a bit, f it, and just chill and enjoy your hobby and try not to overthink.

I mean just this year there have been a ton of cool games released. KCD2 is one of my favorite "immersive" RPGs of all time. Claire Obscure is showing SE how to do JRPGs. EU V is an awesome strategy game. And there are a lot more I didn't list.

Im still hoping to buy new gpu upgrade sometime in 2027, 6070ti to 6090 depending on how good performance and value proposition is there, hell i dont even exclude possible amd card if its good enough(on 6080 lvl or very close), after that i will have plenty performance for another 5-6years anyways :P

With AMD drivers being better on Linux, I think it's time to say fuck you to MS, Nvidia and Intel combined.
If only System76 had Coreboot AMD laptops. Apparently Coreboot simply can't work with AMD motherboards.

Saying this as a hypocrite with a 9800X3D + 5090, but I don't necessarily think it'd be the worst thing if the gaming industry made the most out of the hardware we have for a few years. We are far past the point where power is really limiting what type of games can get made.

Why optimize when you can grab some off the shelf middleware on top of UE 5.x, shit out a port and then maaaybe patch out the worst issues after launch (a big maybe here)? DLSS/FSR will take care of most problems after all!

Hell, I feel we have gone backwards in environment design, destruction, NPC behavior and more. Physics is kind of shit in most games.
