I can't think of anything less "nintendo" than replacing buttons, considering how their games are designed around consistent inputs. If this is real it means they basically have no idea what the fuck is going on.

This is where I am right now.

I just can't fathom why they would do this. If this is real and there's nothing that connects to the controller to offer traditional buttons, I can honestly say this will be the first Nintendo system I pass on. I just can't do it.

I have no problem with Nintendo being radically different...but I draw the line at something like this.

Not sure how expensive that would be or how well it works but if they can do this and it feels good, I would be fine with no traditional buttons. Otherwise, buttons are needed.

I mean, all the info in these rumors points to it being exactly this, so it once again comes down to exactly how good it feels and how well it works and possibly cost of a controller, durability, and other issues not related to explicit gameplay

Alternately, not that I ever minded them moving to Nintendo systems, but maybe this could push capcom to move Monster Hunter back to Playstation devices. I certainly don't want to see that series get gimped in gameplay.

This thread's a lot of fun but I can't pass judgment until I see this "controller" in action.

I will say that one of the main reasons I don't play mobile games is because I'm not really a fan of capacitive touch controls, especially in more traditional games.

I guess if there's one company that could get me to change my tune, it's Nintendo. But the controller would have to be brilliantly designed in terms of "feel."

We'll see.

2. The bottom of the unit looks like it curves upward. Possibly for grip?
3. The screen looks filthy (smudges everywhere)

Even implimenting iPhone 6 haptic feedback touchscreen controls.

Nintendo know that kids born today most likely have never played any games apart from their smartphones.

So in order to tap into this market they need to have a controller that is dumbed down for these kids else they will not know how to play a game with buttons. They are used to touchscreen only input. The barrier Nintendo feels is too high.

Also by having no buttons they can easily import games onto their smartphones rather then develop for two different control inputs. Nintendo doesn't care about the man child fans of the NES days. They want to recapture the kids market again.

Aside from the part about kids not knowing how to play a game with buttons, this is a pretty solid post.

Again if this is real, it'll come down to how well the haptic responses work at simulating real buttons. I think it's theoretically possible to create a haptic button that has no real disadvantages vs a physical one, but I have no idea how close the technology is to actually being there

The pro controller is almost certainly going to be supported or there will be a new pro variant. Most games will likely support both. There will be games specifically designed for the pad that really only work on it, similar to how Splatoon was on Wii U, but those games will likely be fine on their own and anything else can be covered by the alternative.

According to some past posters, pretty damn close. We've had someone talk about the MacBook touch pad, and someone commented that the steam controller is the best controller they've ever owned, thanks to the haptic buttons.

I have a MacBook with haptic touchpad. It does feel exactly like a mechanical mouse "click". I was shocked to learn that it was all one solid piece after the fact. Even double clicks feel exactly the same as a mouse.

But still, controller buttons feel very different from mouse clicks. They have more give and are more raised. They have a particular feel when not being pressed that is impossible to emulate. I would be shocked if Nintendo figured out how to make a flat surface feel like a raised button.
