NX Controller Rumor [Up5: Original was fake, and thus this is too]

I can't think of anything less "nintendo" than replacing buttons, considering how their games are designed around consistent inputs. If this is real it means they basically have no idea what the fuck is going on.

This is where I am right now.

I just can't fathom why they would do this. If this is real and there's nothing that connects to the controller to offer traditional buttons, I can honestly say this will be the first Nintendo system I pass on. I just can't do it.

I have no problem with Nintendo being radically different...but I draw the line at something like this.

Am I too late?

Subtle.

If that's actually the controller then jesus fuck I hope they fix the ergonomics. I can't imagine trying to get leverage to use the thumsticks without some kind of handles.

Fuck

Throw in the towel boys and strap in for one hell of a ride

He could just be really unhappy that people or leaking fakes. Or maybe prototype designs that aren't going to be anything like the final controller. Or he may not know all that much. Lots of options here.

I wouldn't mind this so much if it was the design for their handheld console and not a controller for a home console.

Not sure how expensive that would be or how well it works but if they can do this and it feels good, I would be fine with no traditional buttons. Otherwise, buttons are needed.

I mean, all the info in these rumors points to it being exactly this, so it once again comes down to exactly how good it feels and how well it works and possibly cost of a controller, durability, and other issues not related to explicit gameplay

I hate touchscreen controls. That controller's going to get real disgusting, real fast.

Here's hoping for a button-y alternative. I know it's unlikely, but I can't imagine playing, say, Smash with that thing.

Looks cool for a handheld. It will need an adapter with physical buttons to work for the console. I actually like it but I insist that screen is going to unnecessarily inflate the price like the Wii U pad did
Unless the handheld is a controller as well.

I'm starting to think this plugs into a grip and that has the buttons on it

If this is real, you've got to have faith in Nintendo's ability to make a decent controller.

I can't see touchscreen replacing the major input without any far out tech like the button gif earlier in the thread. Maybe the back has triggers as well?

Still thinking this is the portable.

I love how Nintendo's continued silence on NX has ultimately meant nothing now the controller's leaked.

It looks pretty slick and stylish, but practically I'm not sure how it's going to work.

I wonder, when shit like this happens, you think people at Nintendo are freaking the fuck out? Are heads rolling?

I feel no happiness about this whatsoever.

What re your 2 cents? As in this leak is bad because of painting Nintendo in a negative light? Or that these leaks show maybe not everyone including developers are happy with this decision?

Or just that it's confusing Nintendo's intent, since they haven't made a comment/reveal yet?

Alternately, not that I ever minded them moving to Nintendo systems, but maybe this could push capcom to move Monster Hunter back to Playstation devices. I certainly don't want to see that series get gimped in gameplay.

This thread's a lot of fun but I can't pass judgment until I see this "controller" in action.

I will say that one of the main reasons I don't play mobile games is because I'm not really a fan of capacitive touch controls, especially in more traditional games.

I guess if there's one company that could get me to change my tune, it's Nintendo. But the controller would have to be brilliantly designed in terms of "feel."

We'll see.

A couple of observations:

1. There is a sticker on the bottom left that reads unit 2
2. The bottom of the unit looks like it curves upward. Possibly for grip?
3. The screen looks filthy (smudges everywhere)

You guys do realize why they chose not to have any buttons right?

Even implimenting iPhone 6 haptic feedback touchscreen controls.

Nintendo know that kids born today most likely have never played any games apart from their smartphones.

So in order to tap into this market they need to have a controller that is dumbed down for these kids else they will not know how to play a game with buttons. They are used to touchscreen only input. The barrier Nintendo feels is too high.

Also by having no buttons they can easily import games onto their smartphones rather then develop for two different control inputs. Nintendo doesn't care about the man child fans of the NES days. They want to recapture the kids market again.

Aside from the part about kids not knowing how to play a game with buttons, this is a pretty solid post.

The previous image was too good to be a fake, I'm going to believe this.

I'm hyped Nintendo, now it's your turn to make me buy a console at D1 for the first time

Looks nightmarishly uncomfortable to hold, and while it could be my limited imagination, cannot conceive of an enjoyable way of playing the games I most enjoy on that thing. Hopefully fake.

Again if this is real, it'll come down to how well the haptic responses work at simulating real buttons. I think it's theoretically possible to create a haptic button that has no real disadvantages vs a physical one, but I have no idea how close the technology is to actually being there

AGAIN, the person on reddit who posted these pictures said THIS WAS THE CONSOLE CONTROLLER

It'd actually be a terrible handheld. Shape, size, lack of buttons... I hope this is not Nintendo's next handheld and it's just a controller :(

The pro controller is almost certainly going to be supported or there will be a new pro variant. Most games will likely support both. There will be games specifically designed for the pad that really only work on it, similar to how Splatoon was on Wii U, but those games will likely be fine on their own and anything else can be covered by the alternative.

According to some past posters, pretty damn close. We've had someone talk about the MacBook touch pad, and someone commented that the steam controller is the best controller they've ever owned, thanks to the haptic buttons.
I have a MacBook with haptic touchpad. It does feel exactly like a mechanical mouse "click". I was shocked to learn that it was all one solid piece after the fact. Even double clicks feel exactly the same as a mouse.

But still, controller buttons feel very different from mouse clicks. They have more give and are more raised. They have a particular feel when not being pressed that is impossible to emulate. I would be shocked if Nintendo figured out how to make a flat surface feel like a raised button.

If this is true (and it probably is) it'll be fun to go back to this thread in a couple of years. As far as I'm concerned this could just as well be a smash hit as a complete failure. We'll see.

12 years and Nintendo still doesn't get it.

What happened in 2004 (apart from Nintendo releasing the second best selling gaming machine ever)?
