Ah Nintendo pre hardware reveal thread, unlimited fun.
Only Skyward has that feature, every other Zelda you had to pause. Of course I think the shoulder wheel makes even more sense. It's interesting because there are a lot of possibilities here, each with certain drawbacks.

Better idea: don't require the touch screen for the inventory at all. Use the scroll wheels instead. One scroll wheel for weapon-type items (bombs, bow, boomerang, swords), one for pouch-type items (bottles, etc.).
A touch option in addition would be fine, but scroll wheels would be just as intuitive and probably actually less intrusive. Save the touch interface for stuff that's more context sensitive: e.g. tap an enemy on the screen to shoot them, instead of aiming the old-fashioned way; tap something to throw a bomb directly at it; etc.
Combine with a map on the screen and this could eliminate the requirement to dive into a menu to do basic gameplay things entirely.

- Greater peripheral vision = more immersive
- Area for context sensitive buttons
- Area for HUD elements which might otherwise clutter the screen

Next to the use of scroll-wheel or other suggestions, why is this even an issue? Take any other game where you have to let go of the left stick to select a different weapon. Dark Souls for instance.

I'm not familiar with the staff of Nintendo. I'm only talking about that particular mockup and the idea that any part of the viewable screen would be covered whether it's a thumb, hand, or even an analog stick is just poor. Assuming it's a capacitive screen I really don't think you can have any on screen buttons anywhere near the analogs.

As for this in practice though...it would be absolutely terrible. For those actually entertaining the idea, try playing one of the iOS or Android games that have been doing this for years now. It feels terrible.
And that's with the action all taking place on one screen. Imagine if you were trying to play using that control setup but looking up at a TV screen or monitor. It would be a nightmare to control.

Your point was on taking the thumb of the analog nub, no? In this case, how is moving your thumb up/down/left/right of the central nub worse than moving it to a Dpad on a controller? You take your finger off (and have to stop moving for a second) in both cases, and in fact with this controller, the movement is less distant (and there's more alternate methods to do it real-time, without having to stop running).
And if your concern is instead "I don't know where the items are", why are you assuming the main TV screen will have no HUD at all? Disregarding also that without question you will quickly know that touching above the nub is for the Bombs, below for the Bow, etc.
Another interesting flaw with this.
Undoubtedly your palm/base of your thumb will be touching said screen in at least one location, possibly it would register as multiple locations.
How does that affect the performance of touch buttons? There is typical some sort of multitouch limit beyond which the device can't register more inputs.
How are you supposed to jump in Halo if you are turning?

This is also why I'm leaning toward this being real, or at least a very similar concept being what the NX is. Nintendo is all about accessibility and the balance between newer or younger gamers and more experienced ones. This really is a great solution to bring in new gamers or even more of the casual audience that the Wii remote did well on by not intimidating the users with a very complex control scheme and offer something more familiar and simple. Anything control related to that specific game can be explained and shown on the controller without needed to memorize various button mappings from game to game.

For anyone who wants to preview how second screen buttonless gaming feels, there's a Chromecast-enabled SNES emulator that you can control using soft buttons on your phone. It's not a popular feature.
So I expect the primary method of playing will be looking at the controller itself. That's different from the Wii U's 'second screen gaming' at least.

As for this, I think for Zelda, clicking in the stick to pull up the items at the top of the screen and using the scroll wheel shoulder pad things to select would be better since you're not blocking that part of the screen with your thumbs.
It's still worse. When you are looking at a tv screen to press touchscreen buttons on a controller is not a good idea. There is literally nothing wrong with the old fashion buttons. Nowadays there are button prompts on the TV screen if you forgot what each button does. The only benefit for this is for seriously dumb people who have no idea where a button is or where b button is. I'm sure most gaffers here no where these buttons are and can get used to bottom configuration in a game within minutes. The only benefit this is to the super dumb casuals however they are not worth chasing for the cost of hardcore market as they will still end up playing their free games on iPhone. This will just drive the cost of the console up as well as alienate the hardcore market after they realise the initial cool factor is not enough to stick with it.

Totally agree with you on that, this works best on a portable console, you'd have to look down at the screen all the time to know what you're doing, simply guessing where touch input "buttons" are is a nightmare. On a console I'd guess that the usual stuff like maps and inventory works best. Not sure how they plan to wow us with that though but I'm sure they have some cool ideas up their sleeves as usual.

Also, while Nintendo has chosen a standard look for Mario and his world, people overplay how similar they look and how different the old games look. Most of it comes from advances in technology and diminishing returns. When they remade the older games for SNES they put in polkadot hills and such in the background and they continued to do so going forward. What's important is that the games continued to improve off the old games and each other. NSMBWii has much better level design and gameplay than NSMB and NSMBU improved everything further while making everything look even better. Only real sticking point is the music.

I like these but there are a couple of issues that if this is real, I hope the patent about interchangeable physical buttons is real too. Virtual console very much would require physical buttons imo, and I could easily see the two sticks here replaced with a D-pad and ABXY for that.
Probably just quicker to use the scroll wheel to activate and scroll the list and then click the scroll wheel again to activate. Never 100% happy with thumb-stick clicks. Always feels a bit off to me.

One of the staff at Nintendo World Report says this is all fake. If I take into account Rosti's comment that was full of jargon a little while ago I think I've come to the conclusion that yes these devices are faked. BUT! But they are actually close enough to the actual development tools that Nintendo and other developers wouldn't even want this fake to be seen by the public.
I imagine the patent was all that was needed to create this.
Still that one comment on twitter about no buttons or something concerns me. At least this thing looks modern and fairly sleek(in my eyes anyway). I'm optimistic!

The problem with lots of mock-ups here is that they are trying to transfer Wii U experience into this controller. On of the reasons why Nintendo, making dual-screen games since early 2000s, failed to make universally appealing dual-screen experiences for Wii U, is because the screen of Wii U GamePad was too big to just throw a bunch of icons and HUD elements on it, so developers (both first- and third-party) have to develop quite complicated schemes if they want to make use of GamePad.
Nintendo 3DS touch screen is just too small to clutter it with maps, icons, sliders etc., so it's often used just for a bunch of buttons and UI elements (and it works!). When someone tries to make minimalistic UI for Wii U GamePad's screen, it looks awful and impractical and is ridiculed a lot (Mario Kart 8's horn).
This controller is obviously smaller that the Wii U GamePad. Even if the screen is roughly the same size, its main active zone is obviously smaller, so let's imagine developers are translating laconic Nintendo 3DS touch screen experiences rather than grotesque Wii U ones. Basically, let's make mock-ups using screenshots and footage from 3DS games.

It should be pointed out that the space between the sticks would create a 16:9 screen on its own, not a 4:3 screen. We'd still have the normal view space there, and the stuff beyond that would be even more view.
I mean those screens do have stuff like palm rejection for tablets and capacitive screens support like 10 fingers...hell even the first iPad had that type of support. I don't care what type of vibration they have built into that tiny device...moving your finger down onto a smooth piece of glass is never going to be as good as simply moving down to a d-pad. If it's going to be another generation of extra controllers and accessories just to play traditional games, count me out.

Come on! I thought we were past this hardcore/casusal stuff. The Wii's appeal to casual was one of the best things to happen to our industry. It legitimised gaming. It meant that i could talk to friends, parents, work colleagues about gaming who previously had no experience or interest in gaming before. They understood what gaming was about. And most of them still play them now.
