To people saying 'How can you criticise them, the games need to be there', well of course they do, but the criticism is that they should have been ready to go now. And it appears that they wanted to be. That's the criticism. (Now being E3 reveal -> Holiday launch)
The 'no leaks' thing certainly makes sense now, though.
I don't think there will be much - if any - third party support at launch. We're less than a year away from launch and, in spite of what various 'insiders' have said, I don't think dev kits have been made available outside of Nintendo's close circle of trusted partners, simply because no information has leaked from them.
I hope this isn't some PR talk though. It would make sense though and goes in line with what Emily Rogers said. Hopefully great first and third party titles.

It might not be, but there are differences this time. New president, a delay admitting games won't be ready for the holiday, a potential hybrid console that shares both console and handheld games.
The cycle could very well be broken. Or maybe it won't be.
So Zelda, maybe some Wii U ports, and 2 or 3 new games? That's not bad, but hopefully they have a few 3rd party games as well that aren't months by the time they release it.
Awesome. I'm in day one then. Zelda NX and Smash Bros will be enough for me.
But they've never needed to "get it right" more than they need to this time. Shit happens and games get delayed all the time. There's no way they wouldn't have preferred to launch this November. That they were willing to push it back a few months gives me more confidence than concern, honestly.Delaying the console is admitting that software output pace is as problematic as before.
Even more because they never did this before.
As someone who is much more bummed out today about Zelda Wii U's delay than the NX 2017 release window, I'm shuddering at the thought of that happening. Think happy thoughts...Hold your horses, by the time being the only confirmed game for NX is Zelda, and even then it might not be a launch title, at least it wasn't confirmed as that.
this is a good thing. shit launches have plauged them for a while. At least they know this much.
Zelda, Mario , Smash and Mario Maker ports (perhaps Splatoon), and hopefully some actual 3rd party support that isn't just ports...and its the best launch since the 64 imo.
They're not. The audience for those games is elsewhere. Launching mid-stream against two other established consoles, Nintendo needs to differentiate itself as much as possible. If their goal is to get multi-platform ports, day-and-date or six months later, it doesn't really matter, things aren't going to go well for the NX.
Tegra was out by at least Jan 2010 when 3rd party kits were going out. That wasn't why launch was pushed out to Q1 2011, it was because of the games.3DS had a bad pre-launch hardware fiasco due to the shortcoming of Tegra. I'd not consider that a good example.
I have to imagine that Epic, the Unity guys, EA the other big boys have them at least. Well...Ubisoft might not cuz they leak EVERYTHING.

Iwata says Wii will avoid major droughts that plagued GameCube. (March 2007)
When we launched GameCube, the initial sales were good, and all the hardware we manufactured at that time were sold through. However, after this period, we could not provide the market with strong software titles in a timely fashion. As a result we could not leverage the initial launch time momentum, and sales of GameCube slowed down. To avoid repeating this with Wii, we have been intensifying the software development, both internally at Nintendo and at developers outside the company, in order to prepare aggressive software lineup for Wii at and after the launch. says Iwata. He then says, We believe it is important to provide the market with strong software without a long interval in order to keep the launch time momentum."

Iwata promises that 3DS will avoid major droughts that plagued Wii and DS.
Its important that you be able to supply software with no pause, said Iwata. With the DS and Wii, following the titles that were released at launch, the momentum dropped when there was a gap in software releases. Were making plans so that this type of thing wont happen.

Iwata promises that Wii U will avoid major droughts that plagued 3DS and Wii.
As we learned a bitter lesson with the launch of the Nintendo 3DS, we are trying to take every possible measure so that the Wii U will have a successful launch.
The company was unable to launch much-anticipated first-party titles for the Wii nor for the Nintendo 3DS in a timely fashion in the first half of the term. In the game platform business, creating momentum is very important, but the momentum was once lost, and it has had a large negative effect on our sales and profits.

I apologize to those supporting Wii U about the lack of titles in January and February.

This will be quite forgivable if there's a Mario (3D), Zelda, and Metroid out when the system launches.Having a bevy of intriguing launch titles is essential for this platform, especially since it probably won't be competitive on other fronts.
So, is Nintendo making this on purpose to bother the fans.... And yes in 3 months a game can be ready. So games that wouldn't have been ready for the holiday season will somehow be ready 3 months later for launch?
OK

Kimishima for the combo breaker. Let's be honest, Iwata was a likeable person. But his ability to actually learn, adapt, and execute was horrible/non-existent.
Kimishima being more of an actual business man, is probably the CEO Nintendo really needs/needed.
Yeah, Mario Kart should be their 2018 big title but I think Retro's game is 2017.
By what standard can a person who does not make games dictate to someone who does make games when those games "should" be ready?

NX launching in March to make sure there are games to go along with it
When asked why Nintendo wasn’t launching the NX in time for this year’s big holiday season, Kimishima explained that Nintendo wanted to make sure there were games to go along with the NX.

And the games will be ready a couple of months later by March..?.
I totally understand the reasoning, but it baffles me that they didn't have the games ready for the end of this year, that should've been the priority.
Wat? The 64 launched with like, three to five games or something stupid tiny like that?
Nintendo's best launch was Wii because of Wii Sports. That's never coming back again. lol
They say this every time.
They should be throwing money into making it for holiday 2016. They are insane for missing this year.
Yeah but the NX is Iwata's work, if he can break this cycle of droughts it will be with the next console/handheld to release after the nx
The thing is by the time NX launches it will have been more than 3 years since the last time Retro Studios released a game, and who knows if it's even going to feature during the launch window and not saved as a H2 title. I worry that Nintendo has mismanaged their dev teams because many of their studios should be ready to release a game very soon.
The other possibility is them deliberately holding onto finished games for schedule/momentum reasons.
Absolutely nothing wrong with it, but they aren't going to do it.Not all of them have audiences elsewhere. There's no excuse for Nintendo not trying to get stuff like FFXV, KH3, or other 3rd party games that could sell decently for them. Heck, with Japan, I'd expect stuff like Kh3 to sell better on a potential NX than Xbox.
And what's wrong with getting some of those games and doing your own thing?
Doing so would over-saturate the NX's launch year which would result in 2018 being a little bit dry. It seems like Nintendo is aiming to have a solid and steady stream of first party titles. Unless Nintendo plans to rely on third party releases in 2018 to make up for the slight drought. I suppose it would make logical sense to do that since third parties will have had plenty of time to develop games by then. Hopefully.
I'm sure it's a blend of the two.
Switching platforms mid-development also increases the dev cycle in the case of Retro.
There's probably very small, individually-vetted teams within those companies with early access to technical material, but I think as soon as full-scale development begins, it's impractical to keep so many people sworn to secrecy.
I meant the change from Tegra to Pica, Tegra was out (of 3DS) by Jan 2010. The press didn't catch wind of it until around E3 2010 though.Tegra chip for the 3DS fell through, not the market Tegra chip. If had to have its hardware changed to the current chip, and that definitely fucked with their dev tools in the short term back then.
Kimishima for the combo breaker. Let's be honest, Iwata was a likeable person. But his ability to actually learn, adapt, and execute was horrible/non-existent.

I mean.....if you are a Nintendo gamer how can you not be upset with the Wii U's software lineup over 2015 and 2016? It has had absolutely awful support from Nintendo. Hell 2016 as of now looks like they've all but abandoned it
To be fair, pretty much every platform lacks games in the launch window. PS4 had mostly cross gen games and remasters.
One this isn't solely a Nintendo thing, most platforms struggle in their first year. Two Nintendos whole restructuring which started during Iwata has been aimed at solving this problem. Integrating the handheld and console division, making a unified development environment for handheld and home consoles, integrating the architectures are all aimed at making it easier to support two platforms at once and avoid droughts.
...games they cant showcase at E3 despite the console coming out 9 months later? Forgive me for being a wee bit skeptical, especially after seeing the droughts that plagued the WiiU.
