O.K. so how accurate is Fraps?

OMFG HOLY MOTHER OF MARY IN HEAVEN I CANT BELIEVE IT WTF WHERE ARE MY SEDATIVES AAAAHHH
I just downloaded Fraps. Used it on Trackmania Sunrise and I'm getting in the neighborhood of 88-95 fps on my Sager(aka Dark10x) Laptop(P4 3.6Ghz w/2Gig DDR Ram and Ati X800 Mobility)

Here are my settings:

Resolution = 1024x768

Texture quality = high

Anisotropic filtering x2

Antialiasing x4

Texture quality = "high"

Shader quality =PC1

Shadows = none

Maximum depth = far

I dunno...it's certainly pretty smooth but it seems slightly smoother at lower settings. Therefore I'm curious how well results in Fraps can be trusted? Is it as accurate as say, a counter that's already built in the game?

It's accurate. I've forgotten that it was sitting in my system tray from time to time, then played a game with an in-game FPS counter, and fraps has always basically agreed with what the game said.

So you're getting 30 frames over perfect and you're worried about smooth?

V-Synch on, man, lock that shit to 60. Chances are you are getting worried over screen tearing.

Yeah, maybe its just updating at an odd framerate that doesn't tie in well with the refresh rate of your LCD screen.

I don't think there's a V-sync option in TMS though...

does Fraps have a V-sync option?

Agreed. V-sync at 75 or above is a must.

If you're uncertain how to do it, use Tray Tools. http://www.guru3d.com/article/atitraytools/189/ Best tweaker for ATI cards IMO as it lets you get rid of ATI's control center while providing you with more functions.

Edit: It also does in-game overlays for fps and gpu temp.

Thanks I'll give that a try!

you shouldn't even HAVE your refresh rate at 60hz. 75hz at the LEAST.
Not on LCDs (he's using a Laptop). 75 is pretty much the fastest refresh you'll see, and vast majority of LCD panels don't go over 60 (and they don't need to anyhow).

There's always a V-synch override in the ATI control panel.

Dark sez 75hz lock causes slight ghosting. His eyes are infallible, so I'd take his word for it.

I'd download 5.6 without the CCC (http://www2.ati.com/drivers/5-6_xp-2k_dd_cp_wdm_23864.exe) and then:

start/control panel/display/settings/advanced/options/ and kill "taskbar icon application"

While your there it, never hurts to visit the SmartGart tab and ensure that the settings there are correct. I'd also disable VPU recovery.

Also, I'd make sure that ATI tray tools has triple buffering (under OpenGL/Additional Options) and geometry Instancing (Tweaks/Standard Tweaks) enabled.

What do you gain by doing this? just asking

Nothing, really. Still, I have had no instances where it has saved the day but one where it caused a crash. Anecdotal evidence is parallel to my own so I kill the process just to remove one (potentially crash-causing) variable and make PC gaming a little more sane. :)

Ok...just to give a little history, there was a time where my 9800 pro was overheating due to bad placement (PC on carpet, dust, etc) and the VPU recovery kicked in a few times (2 IIRC) before I opened up the ol computer and figured out my stupidity.

Haven't had any problems in a while (good few months) and seeing as there is a minor-to-nonexistant hit to performance I think I'll leave it on just in case

What are you trying to tell us?

Just a different take on VPU recovery, I think. I kill it because it has given me and others trouble, plus I prefer to have as few variables as possible to consider should I run into a crash.

He/She has been served well by VPUR as have others and so leaving it on is beneficial. If you don't think it has caused you trouble before, you can leave it on and I'll doubt you'll ever have trouble.
