Obamacare repeal officially dead , Trump rage on twitter [POLITICO]

You guys remember John Boehner laughing and laughing saying Republicans would never repeal Obamacare because they wouldn't be able to agree with each other?

LOL

Even if "Repeal and Delay" is dead, it really isn't going to matter as I simply cannot imagine that any insurance company would want to remain in the exchanges in such a politically volatile environment.

The effect will be the same: the ACA will technically remain on the books, but the actual mechanisms of funding, etc. will be cut off by the administration.

It's so hard to watch Trump at all anymore....He just repeats the same points like 4 times and does not explain HOW it is failing, just that 'it's failed'. I want to know what the HOW is.

Except this time the GOP can't escape blame for that happening. No matter the result of this health care situation, it's goin. to hurt their races in 2018 and 2020/

Remember them voting to repeal obamacare over 50 times, including one that used some loopholes to get around the filibuster to force a veto?

I honestly have no idea what the effect will be politically on the GOP and anyone who claims otherwise is being patently ridiculous.

Trump himself doesn't know (and has no interest in knowing) how it's failing.

While I am glad this is happening, this is all sort of confusing. The Republicans literally own the senate, the house, and the presidency, so this sort of nothing happening is baffling.

because "republicans" is sort of a disingenuous distinction in US politics. In fact multiple political parties have risen up over the last couple of years.. Tea Party, Freedom Caucus, etc.. however the US is strictly bi-partisan. If you run independent, you're fucked. so essentially all of these right wing groups simply run under GOP, RNC approves because "hey more GOP in office!!!!!!" but then you get this shit. Where you essentially have multiple different parties in congress.. and the freedom caucus frankly doesn't want what the moderates want, and the traditional GOP is fine giving in to either the freedom caucus or the moderates, but can't give in to both, etc. as for our "president".. well obviously he is essentially yet another party.. the "I'll do anything to get something" party..

so yeah.. we are a bi-partisan nation, but we basically have quite a few different ACTUAL parties in our government.. and all of the factions in one party don't combine to have enough votes to get divisive legislation through.

They can and they will, and FoxNews will try to spin it as a good thing / Democrats fault. Now how that translates to election results, we will see, as logic and reason seems to have no place in US elections anymore.

What gets me is some of them oppose the bill because it doesn't go far enough. Which is crazy because you would think they would let this through to at least get something out of it, and wait next time for something even more extreme.

Because a lot of them have poor/sick constituents who they've brainwashed into thinking Obamacare is evil because it's named after a black man, despite the fact that most of them benefit from the ACA and would be pissed if it actually went away.

8 years and no Obamacare alternative. Not even a general framework. These people don't deserve their pay.

It's ironic seeing as how "running the government like a business" is a Republican slogan. If these no-account schlubs were actually in the private sector they would have been fired long ago for failing to accomplish anything they promise, even when given every advantage.

That's a real nice breakdown. Thanks.

Obamacare isn't even the ACA's name. It's a pejorative that conservative media attached to it to give it a negative connotation. The misconception is entirely of their own making.

Let me guess, Trump and Paul Ryan are going to go back to Paul's Voucher system plan for destroying medicare as a result of this

Good for now. Republicans are gonna bleed the ACA and hope it's problems make it unpopular with voters. Meanwhile thinga get worse for people who already have it bad but when have republicans ever cared about that?

Too bad they already said publically that they would sabotage it. You never reveal your evil plans in advance.

Republicans can't actually do anything other than win elections.

Republicans don't actually want to govern.

They just want power in order to arrange for kickbacks to their financiers, while entertaining their base with distractions and scapegoats.

I don't think he's ever made any cognitive leaps beyond "passed under Obama = failure".

What you've outlined there is not unique to the GOP, but the entire system of how political financing is done, which is a symptom of our broken system. A majority of a normal politician's day job is spent 'fundraising' for various large and powerful interest groups of different shapes and sizes, and yes, in most cases those groups are interested in their own profits over the actual citizenry.

The differentiation between the current GOP and just general revolving door corruption in Washington, is that they go out of their way to be as evil as possible in as many ways as possible.

I think a shorter way of putting it;

You have to balance the needs and wants of the population with the needs and wants of companies and interest groups.

Republicans just quit trying to balance anything.
That balance is the basis of our hybrid semi-socialist regulated capitalist economy. Without it, things won't go well.

It's funny to see the difference in efforts and sacrifice for those who actually believed in healthcare reform and those who do not. Democrats in between 2008 and 2010 passed the ACA knowing full well it would probably cost them their seat, all in order to secure better health care for many. Every single one of the 58 democrat senators voted for the ACA, and many lost their seats when they were up for election.

Here, at the very least four republicans bailed out and more wouldn't probably have had the four already not publicly rejected it. Fundamentally they didn't believe in their bill, nor in healthcare reform and thus weren't willing to risk their jobs to pass the bill. Got to keep fighting the good fight in the war on the ACA, but this battle is decisively won.

There's been talk before about a primary challenge to Trump and it's mostly been dismissed because his approval is sterling amongst Republican voters.

I wonder if that will still be true when he's been president for four years with nothing to show for it.

I mean maybe he cacks before then, or gets impeached, or resigns out of frustration or fear, or any other number of reasons why he may no longer be president in 2020. But if things keep up like this, I don't think he'll be able to glide his way to renomination.

Carter was similarly ineffectual and faced a serious primary challenge in 1980 so it's not without precedent.
