Any other NYC people have to deal with these smelly peasants mucking up their commute?

Apparently on 09/17 "20,000 people flood into lower Manhattan, set up tents, kitchens, peaceful barricades and occupy Wall Street for a few months." They're doing this to spread their "one message" (TBD, apparently) and get back at all those evil bankers (who are in midtown, btw) who took their jerbs.

I appreciate the sentiment - I do, we're all struggling out here - but I can't help but feel that all this does is hamper normal folk from going to work without ever actually doing anything to the people who actually are in charge of the banks (the "bad guys"). Also it's gonna take forever to get a sandwich made at the shop downstairs now.

Maybe they are the bankers. Those monsters.

(I know you're being facetious, but to head this off before someone seriously claims it's supposed to be 'The Man')

It doesn't matter if they represent the bankers, the cops, or the protesters... they ultimately represent the expectation of an armed confrontation.

Shame I'm in college until November.

If it lasts that long I'll go visit and bring donuts or something.

Noooo...

I work on Wall Street

I'm not a dirty banker, I'm a web producer, there's a lot of people that work down here. Assholes, shit... there's already enough tourists and people crowding the street as it is, especially around Federal Hall and the NYSE. I'll take pictures I guess :-/.

Wait "Anonymous" is pushing this ?!

A loose group of left-leaning groups such as Adbusters Magazine, the hacking group Anonymous, and We Are the 99% have announced that they will "occupy" Wall Street on September 17th for an indefinite period of time

How can this possibly succeed? What are they hoping to accomplish?
The same way all political demonstrations succeed - by putting pressure on elected officials to change policy.

Remember, the only thing politicians like more than money is getting re-elected.
Create enough visible outrage against Wall Street and you’ll start having populist bandwagonning trying to score points with the public by going after them.
And that’s a good thing.
Unless you work for Wall Street.

Yup, this will turn out well. It will either be disappointing, or turn into a bunch of idiots rioting, and make everyone who supported it look like idiots.

I swear, if I were in the position of the banks, I would pay the Black Bloc to riot.

LOLOLOLOL....ya an entire country called for financial reform and look what it got them. 20,000 ppl ( even if that much) congregating isn't going to change much. From the looks of it, most of the promoters are anarchist.

I think we assume that after London, the NYPD isn't going to be in making a timid response.

Surprised at how many people are against this.

Americans sure love the bourgeoisie

Because all its going to do is break a few windows, and make the people that show up there look like thugs after the Black Bloc comes in and starts stealing ipods and stuff.

Remember the debt?
Remember how no one cared about it? Remember how Ross Perot got laughed out of the room for even mentioning it?
Remember how a small group of people start freaking out about it?
And look at us now, politicians are falling over themselves to be “tough on debt”.

And remember the war in Iraq?
Remember how it had 70% public support?
Remember how a small group of people start freaking about it?
And look at the dems in ’08, politicians fell over themselves to be the most against the war.

But there’s no need to focus on those two example, throughout history, small groups were very successful pushing an agenda over the general public, from abolitionism through women’s suffrage to civil rights.

And it’s even easier now, as the vast majority of the public hate Wall Street and the banks.

I'm not saying it will work, but not trying because it's hard is a sure way to keep the status quo.

Huh?
Where did you get that?
It was most certainly not my intent.

If they could only put as much effort into bettering their own communities then staging a protest life wouldn't be so bad.
I feel that an overhaul of our financial system is going to significantly better my life and community.

Won't the publicity allow the NYPD to deploy additional officers ahead of time, who will break up any large gathering before it gains critical mass?
