MAJOR WWE CREATIVE SHAKE-UP
by Mike Johnson @ 8:11 PM on 10/8/2012

In what I am told was a "scary scene" backstage at Raw about an hour ago, Vince McMahon pretty much told the WWE Creative team that he wanted to see things change and that no one's job was safe if they didn't.
Perhaps to illustrate his point, Bryan Gewirtz, who has been the top writer for the company for a long time and especially oversaw the Raw side of things (Dave Kapoor wrote the show but everything went through Gewirtz, then Stephanie and Vince McMahon), has been dropped from the creative team and was sent home from Raw.

Gewirtz' official position was Senior Vice President of Creative Writing. Technically, he is still with the company as of this writing. Gewirtz being sent home was described as shocking to me and something that no one saw coming. One person told me they believed that he "fell on the sword" to show everyone else they can be replaced.

McMahon's declaration to the creative team comes just a week after the lowest rated Raw in 15 years last week. Since expanding to three hours, the flagship WWE series' ratings have slipped considerably, especially in the third hour.

As we noted in the Elite section of PWInsider.com last Monday, McMahon was visibly angry prior to Raw going on the air last week, although his mood lightened as the evening went on. The belief is that the pressure of getting ratings back up to where he and NBC Universal want them has been stressing.

Gewirtz has been working for WWE for over a decade.

How many nights a week does R-Truth cry himself to sleep at night? I bet it's a lot. This is just so hard to watch sometimes and not for the obvious reasons.

It's amazing how much he's been buried since his feud with Cena.

But then again, that's what happens to everyone who feuds with Cena. :/

And more collateral damage for WWE Creative via PWI

The official word on Bryan Gewirtz's position with the company is that he will remain a "consultant" for the company. One source believed that contractually, they cannot let him go without paying him a penalty so he will remain in a position where he provides feedback to the company on their product.
Replacing Gewirtz will be Eric Pankowski, who was hired by the company in February as Senior Vice President, Creative and Development. Pankowski was a senior executive at Reveille and Warner Bros and has been working directly with Stephanie McMahon in recent months.

In another move that had talent talking, Ed Koskey is going to be taken off the road and will be working more out of WWE Headquarters. That had quite a few pieces of talent we've heard from in the last hour upset as Koskey was well liked and considered someone they could relate to and deal with while pushing their own ideas. Koskey being taken off the road was described to me as "collateral damage" from Gewirtz being removed as the two worked closely together.

I have a feeling Vince's frail mind is going to be exposed for us all to see, and it's going to be sad.

I got a feelin',
that tonight's gonna be a good night,
that tonight's gonna be a good night,
that tonight's gonna be a good good night

I still have hope that he'll announce something to mitigate the current state of WWE TV. Shorter hours, end of the brand split, firing Brodus, anything.
