A few things:

• Switch 2 should have had an upgrade path. Switch 2 physical is a game key card, so I guess I'm just playing this on the Switch 1 instead.
• This is a rework of the mobile gacha game Champions of the Continent, most of the story from that game is intact. They've removed the gacha components and pay-to-win stuff.
• This is technically a prequel to the first game (hence the "Zero" moniker)
• There is a demo for each platform that lets you play the first two hours of the game, if you want to try it out. Save data from the demo carries over into the full game.
• Soundtrack is straight up fire and I will fight anyone that says otherwise
• Game is $40.99 on GreenManGaming if you're looking to save $10 on a PC copy

As someone who played Champions of the Continent for a while and have also played the demo - the majority of the game's balancing seems to come from there being characters you can find throughout the world that have various skills that you can learn if you challenge them in battle and win. These look to be mostly the same skills that were tied to characters in the gachapon pulls in the mobile version.

Obviously in the free-to-play model, you could buy enough summon tickets at the beginning of the game to unlock all the best characters / abilities, then steamroll the story content. That doesn't seem to be the case here, seems they've placed the best moves near the end of the story here. Presumably they created an actual "power curve" to the moves you can unlock - as well as the characters you can recruit in-game for this one.

Will be interesting to see how the balance actually goes though. The mobile game got ridiculously hard the farther you got, unless you had all the best 5* characters unlocked.

Extremely hyped for this game. I loved OT1 and OT2 and really excited to try this one with town building and 8 character party in battle with row switching. The demo was a lot of fun (though limited).

Game can't release soon enough on Steam.

Yes, this started development as a port of the mobile game to home consoles. They added in additional story elements, mostly to do with the game's town building aspect. But it's predominantly the same story, and has the same front row / back row / eight characters in battle mechanic from the mobile game. They just removed all the gacha stuff and guest characters, and re-balanced it.

Earlier this year, the rights to the mobile game got sold off to Netease, and it's been getting progressively worse since.

At the end of the prologue in the demo, you choose (Revenge Path Story) or (Town Building Path Story) - though you can swap between them whenever you'd like. Presumably at some point the town building becomes mandatory to get 100% clear, but I'm also assuming based on how the game is structured around the narrative of the mobile game (that didn't have the town building aspect) that it's largely optional or something that can just be completed in small parts here and there.

I'm personally looking forward to it as a huge occasional distraction from the main story.

Did you play original Bravely Default? That game also had light town building, the difference here is you have more option how you build your town.

The town is pretty integral to the game, with being able to add a Shop that will get various items, a Training Arena for learning skills, and more stuff we don't know yet. You don't have to get too much into the decoration of your town, so interaction can be kept to minimal as needed.

I've ordered a physical Switch copy already, so I'll be playing the standard version. The eShop has the upgrade for $15, but I don't think I'll bite.

The only tempting thing about the deluxe edition (for me personally) is the inclusion of the three skills that get unlocked from the beginning. The Extra JP Mastery, in particular, sounds like it'd shave several hours of grinding off of the experience if you keep it equipped. SP Saver means you'll use less SP for abilities, which can also mean shorter boss battles or longer dungeon delves before having to go back to town or restoring it with items. The Triple Strike move is also pretty dope, especially near the beginning of the game, because three-hit moves that only take one BP will make breaking defenses a lot easier.

But... all these can be unlocked through the normal course of the game, so it seems silly to pay real money for them. Same with the consumable items, they're all one time use. The only thing here that's actually exclusive to the deluxe edition is the decoration items - and they're just that, decorations. Cosmetics.

Also, as an early game tip, the Merchant job for the main character has a skill called "Arrow of Fortune" and this gives JP to the entire team based on the damage this skill deals. It's a great skill early on to earn JP (used to learn skills and unlock slots). Merchant also has a skill that deals damage to all enemies and restores SP (this game's MP) to all characters (front row).

So Merchant is a great starting job. You'll likely earn more JP this way rather than the Extra JP skill from Deluxe edition. But if you do get the Deluxe edition, the skill will be complementary.

If you talking about the visuals yes DQ 2D-HD games are gorgeous but also they are not really "2D-HD" since the environments in that game are full 3D with more realistic texture work while Octopath series are all about everthing looking like pixel work.

But I do agree that Octopath 0 doesn't look anywhere near as good as Octopath 2 when it coms to visuals.
