Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

No point really following Oculus Rift if you're not in on the dev kit scene. No info on the consumer version yet and it isn't like watching the video of a game coming out, it's a personal experience you can't really capture in net videos.

Any other GAFers lurking this thread with barely-contained excitement for the consumer model?

Yup.

Although the way things are going, I'll probably end up caving for the dev model at some point. I don't think I have the willpower to hold out until 2014 while people are talking about it all over GAF and Twitter.

$300 already set aside for it and am planning a dedicated VR station

Hopefully by the time it comes out Star Citizen will be in beta or released with rift support fully implemented and nothing else will matter

That's why I jumped on one at the end of the kickstarter period. I figured I'd get $300 worth out of it even with a few injector games or nice demos.

I think with doom 3, HL2 and minecraft (especially minecraft), I'll have my money's worth already. $300 for 12-18 months VR goodness before the consumer version? Yes please

i read that the last project cars update implemented OR Support.
When someone here has OR + pCars and maybe a Wheel i would love to here some impressions :)

I still shed a tear every single day that I'll never be able to experience this.

so ... what is holding you back ? no depth perception ? 3D isn't absolutely necessary if I recall Carmack's quakecon speech correctly; the FOV and the headtracking themselves do the most work in convincing your brain that you're actually in the game

Stereo blindness and without the 3D effect It'd probably be quite an expensive investment when I'm already using a large desktop monitor and TrackIR. The 3D is the magical cherry to finish the cake.

lazy eye? check out this link: http://www.thehealthage.com/2013/04/playing-tetris-video-game-may-treat-lazy-eye/

turns out using something exactly like the Oculus used in conjunction with titles designed to treat the condition could cure stereo blindness in people with amblyopia with a simple game like the one described in that link above. unlike eye patching, this new treatment appears to work for adults.

maybe there is very real reason for you to still be hopeful.

Haha, no, not lazy eye. No eye problems outside of a slight myopia but I just can't see 3D. My eyes start to water badly, hurt and I see very little of the 3D effect.

3DTV or 3D movies? Ever tried a HMD? Whole different level of 3D and much more natural to view

Perhaps not enough to jump on one blind, but you should definitely try and get to try one out.

I wonder if games should support 2D modes? If you cannot see 3D or have other issues, that might allow you to still enjoy the rift. Plus it'd be less strain on your computer,

3D-blind people using the rift would just see a big screen with headtracking.

But let's not downplay one of the Rift's biggest feature: 1:1 scale and 110° FOV.

That's the real gamechanger. Headtracking with a fixed, small screen with narrow FOV simply can't compare.

Any news about emulation ?
Even without headtracking, just looking at 3D version of N64 or NGC games with that would be insane.

So I got to play around with an OR a few days ago, with both the Tuscany and roller coaster demo. Absolutely mind blowing.

The resolution didn't bother me one bit, but the field of view wasn't as great as I had hoped. Might be because the unit wasn't properly calibrated to my face (or maybe someone with glasses had tried it on before me), but I found it somewhat disappointing to see the black edges so big.

Other than that - I'm even more hyped getting my own one.

I have a PCARS manager account and an oculus rift on preorder after kickstarter orders ship, but I will have to try to buy a supercomputer first to be able to run at 60 fps. :P

I really don't like Vireio injection. I was super hyped about Mirror's Edge, but man, it was off. Need dat native support.

Wait, there are black borders? I was under the impression that this filled your entire field of vision.

Man I really want this, but I wouldn't be able to get one until August if I preorder now :( Quick question for those of you who already purchased the oculus rift. Do they charge you when the rift ships or the moment you preorder it?

I used my credit card and it charged me the moment I submitted all of my info.

@ Every one regarding the FOV: I'm confused, honestly. I thought the amazing thing was the horizontal FOV? Rather, it is the verticality? Interesting. I have one preordered due to all of the comments, but I find it interesting as I thought it completely filled your vision.

I was expecting some black borders (as your total field of view is something like 180 degrees vs the 110 the Rift provides), but I was still somewhat disappointed with how "little" you see. Again - it might be that the Rift I tried wasn't calibrated for me so that the screen was a bit too far away from my eyes.

One of the comments said everyone was rubbing their eyes or their eyes were watering -- what is bothering them so much? The resolution or distance?

I thought it had been mentioned by many people for quite a while that the horizontal FOV, while better than some/most solutions, is kind of like holding your hands on either side of your face? So like ski goggles or something maybe.

How do you move forward? I don't get it. This is far from a game.

You walk forward. This was a demo, the full version is designed to be used in large open arenas - think laser tag without any walls. Your position is tracked wherever you walk.

Not sure how they stop people bumping into each other though

There are special 360 treadmill-like floors for that.

Heard a rumour last night, no idea how true, the guy is trustworthy but prone to misunderstanding.

My friend knows someone who is apparently working with OR to create "3D sound" for version 2 which is a custom system supposedly far better than just headphones.

Like I say may be rubbish, but did get me wondering how much impact on immersion the current sound setup people are using has. Are most people using speakers or headphones or a surround setup? Anyone noticed a difference in experience?

So is there any place I can visit where they've gathered all playable software? This has probably been answered but I can't seem to find it.

I'd think a good Dolby Headphone mix should be sufficient for amazing audio immersion. For example, I love the way Skyrim and Battlefield 3 sound through my stereo headphones and my Dolby Headphone sound card.

I'd rather no audio on the consumer model, so I could use my own headphones and hardware.

So how do you guys control mouselook in first person with that thing? Isn't it really confusing turning your head via the mouse/second stick at the same time as, well, turning your actual head? It sounds so jarring to me.

I just played Half-Life 2 from the start until the end of Ravenholm in VR.

OH MY FLIPPIN GOD

I'm not quite at Ravenholme yet (not far from Black Mesa East). What is your favourite part so far though? Manhacks and the airboat/helecopter chase have been highlights for me. The whole experience has been amazing so far.

to be honest I haven't really had to think about it. it feels good.

I somehow have a feeling that all three console manfuactures somewhat missed the ship. IN the future we will see a new company bigger than all of those - the one that establishs VR on the market. Maybe it's the occouls guys, but here is definitly something new which is growing pretty fast and has a much bigger impact than PS4 and XBOX720 will have.

Oculus Forums at mtbs3d.com, someone has a torrent of all the demos, or riftenabled.com

Nothing stopping the consoles supporting something like the rift during their lifecycle, but realistically it'll be the next-next gen before its really mainstream IMO

Hmm, now I'm a little confused. Is it simply the 3d and head tracking that is immersive then? I'm sorry if it is a redundant question, but I've been under the impression that it was the horizontal FOV fooling your brain.
