Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

As much as I hope Occulus Rift succeeds... I hope there, very quickly, becomes a standard that hardware has to adhere to so multiple devices from different companies can come out and compete against each other. A Direct X or OpenGL of headsets... otherwise competing devices will have different standards and then you have to worry if game X will compatible with headset Y, or that you might have to do a lot of manual tweaking to get things working.

Kind of like how 3D monitor support is currently handled <_<

Alone the free demos will worth the money :D
Need Dev Kit V2, must order it day 1 :/

Zombies looks awesome. Holy crap. Did anyone else try out Spacewalk yet? I thought that was really cool.

We got ours a few days ago. A bit disappointed about how lowres/pixelated at parts it looks.
But I assume the actual Oculus will be different from the devKit in terms of clarity.

Tried out Spacewalk yesterday. Aside from some shadow-flickering issues it worked very well. I also loved the controlls as they seemed pretty "realistic". I think it's one of the best Demos out there.

It's certainly one that seemed to show how something could be educational, while simultaneously neat. Seeing the ISS up close was cool, as was getting to grips with what it might be like to spacewalk.

don't expect it to be MUCH better, but a 1080p screen is being targeted instead of the 1280 x 800 one we have currently. pixels should be noticeably smaller, but they won't be unnoticeable either.

Haven't ran it yet. How powerful a demo is it? My PC is kind of low end, and I am barely able to get 60FPS on some of these demos(and some of them I am not able to get it at all).

I have no way of gauging, i'm afraid. I get 60 fps on all these unity demos.

I appreciate the replies here. Quite a few people have practically labeled me a bad parent for letting my son try this out for a minute. I was cautious to even try it at first, as I am pretty protective, but I figured using the least motion-sickness inducing demo for just a minute would be harmless.

And he loved it.

I imagine he was pretty mind fucked too. "So today I ate cereal, played, went to a big bathtub in space with fire balls flying around, took a nap"

Huh, here?

No, not here at all. Youtube(of course). Most have deleted the comments though.

I plan to record a lot more reaction videos from people not at all familiar with gaming or VR.

Ah sorry, makes sense, typical youtube.

Oculus Rift works very similar to real life 3D, the lenses are set to infinity, so the eyes are relaxed, supposedly it's safer than looking at a monitor. A few minutes is 100% harmless IMO.

Looking forward to the reaction vids. :)

Thanks, and I agree with you. My 2 year old was seriously loving the shit out of it. I can't imagine what he was thinking.

I doubt I will ever get a better reaction video than my friend big mike. He didn't hold back or try to act hard. He just took it all in and was honestly amazed by everything.

I had a bunch of our friends try it out on Sunday, and they wouldn't let me film them, but it was really cool putting someone on a rollercoaster who has never been on a real rollercoaster, and someone else who has been on one, but is deathly afraid of them.

Hydra is a great start controller that's on the market now, but its not build for VR.
This means that while its accurate, its not accurate enough plus you still use buttons and sticks to move around and make your fingers move.

The ideal VR input device would be a sort of glove, or something like this:

vr-virtual-reality-controller-for-ps3.jpg

that gives you per finger control with haptic feedback, so you can feel the surface and really interact with the environment around you.

Something that I was thinking about before that might be more.. user friendly is a simple wristband, that reads the predictable muscle and tendon movements in your wrist and accurately predict the state of each finger.

something like http://www.edailypost.com/myo-wristband-control-gadgets-with-a-simple-hand-gesture. I am pretty sure you could also use electrodes to simulate touch feedback

Yes, something like this is exactly what I'm hoping for. Possibilities are absolutely limitless. My dream would be to help develop stuff like this. I guess thats why I'm goin back to grad school.

The Planet1 demo is really awesome, except for how it crashes if the first thing you do in the demo is press forward. If you press backwards first instead, all is well. (at least this is what I concluded).

Going all the way from the surface into space is really awesome... but whenever I try to go back down to the planet, it gets stuck in this weird hazy zone and the sound gets really warped and loud. Almost like reading some kind of creepypasta lol

Really cool demo, though.

So I've been very unimpressed with the unofficial support virieo perception adds to things, but after reading the following thread (nudged there by Road to VR) I've just spent about half an hour playing Doom 3 (not using Virieo, to be clear).

http://www.mtbs3d.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=142&t=16703&start=40

there are issues: your guns are higher up than you would want and you can see the edge of the arms. the laser sight could do with a laser dot. cut scenes have no head tracking. the hud is completely impossible to see.

over all though, Doom 3 sings in VR, just as you'd expect. TF2 is neat, but it's not a game that trades in atmosphere, and it's too fast faced for you to really soak in your environment. Doom 3 is improved many times over with VR imho.

as well as setting the recommended options in your cfg, I'd recommend setting m_pitch "0", which definately helps Doom 3 get a massive leg up on other unofficial support, and the scale of everything feels MUCH closer to 1:1 than anything I've achieved with Virieo.

Most importantly it works well and it makes the game better. well, my lasagna is almost done in the oven. next I shall try the Zombies in the Holodeck alpha.

to think this thing was *only* $300.

edit: played Doom 3 solid for about an hour and a half. yep. this rocks. head aiming against floating enemies is really cool, especially the cacodemons. Pinkies all of a sudden feel massive, more like bulls than big dogs. The atmosphere and lighting really shine here, and the relatively blank metal surfaces look good in low resolution without being too distracting. Chainsawing things is perhaps not recommended (as fun as it was) as clipping into enemies felt kind of weird.

accidentally ejecting when you are in space and falling through the planet and down a big cylinder of doom is surprisingly fun.

Yet another one of my coworkers tries the roller coaster demo. The first one is him doing the roller coaster demo, and the second one he foolishly attempts to do the roller coaster on one foot(he fails, and never really actually stands on one foot)... the reactions in these videos are fucking great. The guy is a good sport too, and didn't mind that I recorded him.

Has anyone tried the Proton Pulse OR demo? The gameplay is pretty boring, but the environment is kind of Tron-y and it's awesome.

I wish I were a 3-D modeler. I would make a Tron-themed nightclub so hard.

Protip on the OR Roller Coaster demo: Hit Tilde, then type "slomo 1.5" or "slomo 2.0". WOOOO

So if I want one now????? hmmm what is the process? is it too late...or the wait going to be too long.

edit- oops, just checked out the first page.... June huh? that is not that bad.

That is what they are saying, but if you order right now it could possibly take longer than June to get to you.

So from the last pages of that thread i guess.. first person oculus won already :p I hope someone try something with an other type of view.

Out of curiosity what do you have to do with Ibaraki Prefecture? Judging by the people in the video you definitely don't live there.

Impressive.

With this in mind, has a use now been found for the Tony Hawk Shiteboard controller?

Using something like the Balance Board for movement seems like a logical step towards the whole immersive VR type experience. There are definitely some kinks to work out with the way it is right now. Walking in Skyrim was kinda janky and re-connecting the Balance Board after disconnecting it caused me some issues. But potentially if more software for it is created or an actual dedicated peripheral is made, I think it could be great.

Don't worry, I'm sure people will get creative with that soon enough. Something like a birds eye view would be fun too. e.g Total War, The Sims.

I ordered in January and it's not here yet, but they're supposedly increasing output around now. So estimates of June-July could be accurate if you buy now. Nobody knows really.

So, I thought this was still limited to those who ordered one during the Kickstarter. Just found out that orders have been open on their website.

Has it always been like this?

I just ordered one a few minutes ago. Can I actually expect it to ship in June? Or do they say, start shipping the next 10,000 orders in June, and I can expect mine to actually ship in August or something?

Pretty much. I'm not sure if it went live immediately after the Kickstarter ended, but it wasn't long afterwards if they didn't. And they let people know it'd be happening. They even extended the free Doom 3 voucher to the first 1000 orders.

I wouldn't expect any delays. They seem to be ramping up. And the 1080p Nexus 7 is set to be unveiled fairly early into Q2. So if their ideal timeline of Dev kit 2 shipping in Q3 is met, they should be able to secure screens by then. If this all happens, they won't want to have a large backlog of older orders.

I just tried the museum of the microstar demo. Pretty awesome! I think the Fist is perfectly suited for something like this, it makes walking around and looking at the exhibits a far more involving experience. We really need positional tracking though, I often found myself leaning down to look at some detail (which sadly doesn't work).

Nothing is known about the second dev kit and if I remember correctly palmer (or someone from oculus) on reddit mentioned it was still up in the air or something.

Can someone fill me in on what's going on with the orders? My friend ordered the dev kit a while back and got the Tshirt in the mail a week and is supposed to get it soon but they haven't have him any real date. They just say his order has been processing for weeks now

The last update was they're waiting for another shipment from China and sorting through international orders then local. Apparently shipments are growing exponentially.

Is there actually a second dev kit about to come out? I was planning on ordering one of these within the next few weeks.

I'm prone to believing the above chart simply because the Digital Foundry break down showed they were using the exact same screen as the current Nexus 7. That slide for Dev 2 would coincide very nicely with the soon to be released 1080p Nexus 7.

Of course, that's all speculation. And it's possible it isn't released anytime soon. I'm personally waiting on it and am expecting a 1080p screen/updated tracking by the end of the year. You'll have to make your own judgement call.

Doom 3 is so good in VR. So so good. Honestly, everyone with the Oculus needs to give it a go. Make sure you set your height and ipd in order to make everything feel 1:1. I can play it for a couple of hours solid with no ill effects at all too.

Wait. How? I thought OR Doom 3 was delayed.
