Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

Something is supposed to be released this week, if I'm not mistaken.

Cool, I'll keep an eye out for that.

Man, playing Gamecube games or most emulated console stuff on the Rift seems like it would be pretty terrible. Is the Dolphin support just going to be warping with no headtracking or increasing of the FOV?

Dolphin has a mode that gives you free camera movement, and it allows custom aspect ratios, so head-tracking and wide FOV should certainly be possible. There is an issue with some games, though, where if you enable widescreen you get pop-in on either side of the screen, so that might be a problem.

So long as I can play F-Zero GX in first-person with head-tracking I'm happy. I feel, after using the Rift, that F-Zero would be almost the perfect game for it. The excellent depth perception you get with the Rift will give you an incredible sensation of speed, and as you're sitting in a chair and using a steering wheel you won't get that feeling of disembodiment you get when you're relying on a keyboard/mouse/controller to move around.

Hell, if I had the cash I'd buy one of the force-feedback F-Zero AX arcade units and spend the summer modding it to get it to work with Dolphin and Rift.

Fake edit: Project Cars should be pretty good as well, but that's still a fair way off.

I really want to see your vision become a reality.

Interesting, I didn't know that. I'll definitely give Dolphin a try once the Rift stuff is in there then.

Yeah, it's usually when games do object culling based on what they think the camera frustum is. I have the exact same problem in Dark Souls.

Late to the party, order number well over 50k. Couldn't wait with all the hype.

Hopefully it'll get here sometime before Christmas. :)

Didn't Project Cars get OR support a couple days ago?

Or like didn't they announce that it will have OR support?

I remember someone posting this.

Yep, uglies up the otherwise beautiful experience of playing Wind Waker on a HDTV as well.

I have a feeling you might be able to work around it in F-Zero, though, even if it's a matter of tricking the game into thinking it's in third-person mode to make sure it draws the track and racers all around the player, and not just in front of him.

Yeah, what I meant was the game's full release won't be until next year (by which point I might as well wait for the commercial Rift). I don't usually play in-development games*, both as I prefer to get the full experience in one go, and as I have an enormous backlog of unplayed games in any case.

*Except Kerbal Space Program. Another game, incidentally, which I'd love to play with a Rift.

more stuff about Google Maps + OR
http://www.roadtovr.com/2013/05/15/...le-maps-with-oculus-rift-and-leap-motion-5919

Maybe worth a new Thread? No idea :)

“For this demo they integrated Google Maps API for chrome and they are using the API from Rift and Leap to send the motion information to Chrome as well.
They put it together overnight but base on the interest that it has generated they will release it publicly.
Also the new version of Google Earth comes with leap motion support and they are planing to add Oculus Rift support,” Risso told me.

Would love to know where Google had get their OR? One at google are one of the early backers? Have they contacted Oculus? Contacted Oculus Google?

I've missed this thread.

Played around with my architectural design models in VR. What a trip. Now to design and renovate my home with VR as an aid.

After that I'll make a real time optimized penthouse apartment. Then a floating castle.

Played around with a VR drum kit demo last night. Takes a few minutes to get used to it, but totally amazing stuff once you get going. And it's only midi for now - but the dude plans on getting some distance and force stuff going to modulate volume. That'll be smashing when it happens.

What are you using to view your design models? That's something I'd like to try too but only from an amateur/home planning point of view

Are you trying to work Rift support into the DSfix?
I was -- sadly I had to pretty much give up on it due to the culling issue. All other problems were solveable or solved (head tracking, rendering the same frame twice, aspect ratio & FoV, and of course applying the distortion shader, which is the easiest part).

Oh no! Dark Souls would be a dream come true in VR...

Jesus mary mother of fuck, Half Life 2 on this bitch is amazing. I urge everyone with a Rift to try it. The dark hallways at the beginning actually make me realize how amazing a horror game will be on the Rift.

The rooftop scene near the beginning actually makes you feel uneasy.

The only issue I am having with the dev kit Rift is comfort during long use. It's still very light, but after an hour or so I do find myself wanting to take a break.

Either way, fucking try HL2 on this thing. I just cannot wait until it has official Hydra support. For those who are playing HL2 on the Rift right now, what kind of control setup are you using? Right now I am just using a wired 360 controller while standing up, but I want a better experience.

Some friends are coming by this weekend and I plan on letting them try it. Hopefully their reactions will be worthy enough to record. I will let the ones familiar with gaming try out HL2, because holy shit it is awesome.

And thank you plagiarize for PMing me your HL2 setup info.

I'm playing it with kb/m. I tried with the controller standing up, but dual analog just sucks too much to be enjoyable for me in this type of game.

Anyway, with the recent patch HL2 is even better on the Rift.

I agree with the dual analog sucking ass, but I think standing up is the way to go so it's a trade-off for me.

Really wanting some kind of positional tracking gun now for this game. Hydra official support needs to come on.

This was shocking to me, even after all the demos I've gone through. I was hugging that right edge like a bitch the entire time. Fuck.

Man, these comments hype me more than anything. I love it when games play with a sense of scale. It makes me sad that we probably won't see games like Shadow of the Colossus or Crackdown on the OR.

Indeed... comments like this make me want to not wait to get the OR... but I know in the long run I'll regret it when the retail version is out.

Am really enjoying playing with a 360 controller personally.

mouse and keys here. they work surprisingly well. also, being sat down lets me go longer. I've put in more than two hour sessions sat down, which I couldn't do standing up because you start getting more motion sick as it's hard not to sway slightly.

edit: also this just happened.

they just hit the Oculus kickstarter stretch goal. $225,007 dollars so far. very glad to see that.

Nah, just think of it like getting a GBA now, and a DS 18 months later. If you think you'll get $300 value out of it in that time (and you can probably sell it on later to get some of that back), then why not go for it?

Thanks, I'll take a look. If you have anything you can share, I'm sure people would be interested to see.

Yeah, will do once I optimize the scene.

I think it'd be bad form to release a demo that runs at 15 fps in some places. Even though I've built up my VR sea legs, I think that'd cause most people to mess themselves in short order.

Holy shit last night I got the confirmation email that my order status will be changed to shipping today.

Next week is going to be the longest week ever.

Not to get your hopes up, but I've noticed a trend that your status gets changed well after it has already left.

For example, the day mine changed to "Shipped" , I received the Rift.

Yay, changed to 'about to ship' !

UK, last of the kickstarters, order 98xx

Hurry up you lovely bastard

Damn, I'm 97xx in the US and still at 'Ready' with no email notifications, don't forget me Oculus!

Looks like the recent US shipping update got up to the 9600's and now they're working on EU orders. I should be in the next batch of US shipments, whenever that is.

Damn, they tried to deliver something yesterday and left a notice.

It could be it, since it's an international delivery.

Off to the post office tomorrow I go.

For those of you keeping track of the deliveries: I'm in the EU (Switzerland), order 98xx, last day of kickstarter.

I wish I could convey the amazing gaming experience I just had with the official Half Life 2 VR patch! I was seriously yelling out load while driving the sled, (all the while physically moving my head to track the incoming missles). Seeing those copters fly overhead has to be experienced in person to be believed!

Thank you Valve and Oculus team!

I can't believe this is just the beginning! This is the real deal folks! Watch this space!

I think I asked price before... but do we know an even approximate date on the possible retail release? This thread is killing me with hype, so much so that I'm very tempted to just put my order for the development unit even though I know the retail version will be better (... plus then it gives me an excuse to get a second one. One for the desktop, and whichever is smaller to take with my laptop to friends)
