Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

Do any Canadians happen to know if they've finally "fixed" the brokerage charges from UPS (either by dealing with them upfront, or switching carrier)?

The idea of ordering one and getting reamed by UPS unless I go an hour out of my way to clear the package myself isn't very enticing...

Mine came through UPS but I didn't get any brokerage charges.

I have to admit one slightly selfish reason for wanting the Rift to get excellent reception and sales. I've been talking about this damn thing to all my friends, some family and so on, and not one person knows what I'm talking about and don't usually comprehend the concept behind it. If it gets big, my friends are going to think I'm some gaming Nostradamus, because for them it will have just popped out of nowhere.

Just a random thought.

Really? Damn. I did! $98.18 to be exact, in Vancouver :/ Not only that, my screen is massively inferior to the Rift I'd borrowed for a month. Banding and multiple bright green stuck pixels right in the middle of the left eye. In talks with Oculus right now, but I'm not going to bother replacing it if it's going to hose me for any more cash. I know I'll be buying the next dev kit or consumer version anyway and I don't intend selling this on.

I got mine via UPS a couple weeks ago, complete with the missing address line 2 and no last name on the shipping label. Luckily the shipping label had my phone number so the driver could deliver. They billed me $75 brokerage/tax/etc on delivery. I live in Calgary.

Can anybody chime in on how feasible it would be to run the Rift off of an iMac? I have a 680MX, an i7 processor, 8GB of RAM, and Boot Camp installed.

I was planning on building a dedicated rig for the consumer version of the Rift, but seeing as that release is sooo long away I might just pre-order now so long as I can run games decently enough with my current set-up.

Ugh! I love you Europe, but seriously, I've seen that order numbers right before AND right after me have gone to processing. I may cry... it's becoming too much to take!

Does US and Europe have completely different order numbers? AI am 060xxx in the US and am wondering if I should be expecting something soon.

Order numbers are largely irrelevant, they do batch shippings in regions (with some respect to at what time you ordered) so numbered orders get sent 'out of order' so to speak.

This should be better than vireio

I believe you can get a 14day trial version, hope to read some impressions from oculus rift owners here :)

I have the full version already. I am very happy about this news. May have time to post some impressions tonight. Should be able to give Crysis, Fallout 3, and Bioshock 2 a whirl. I think I have them all installed.

Just tried it out with BL2. It has a really nice 3D effect and feels pretty natural (definitely better than Vireio). The tracking is passable but seems a tad bit sluggish to me. A main issue is your health and shield are virtually useless. They are way too far off the screen.

To be honest, the more games and demos I try with the Rift, the clearer it becomes that games really do need to be designed (or at the very least heavily modified) with the Rift in mind to give a truly satisfying experience.

Ah its crazy when I was reading the rift forum and people in the Netherlands were getting theirs and their order numbers were like 61000 but then the shipping numbers here are still around 57000ish i think.

Oh well.

did a few demos for friends on a similar setup. I turned the graphics to good or fast and most demos ran fine. Some, like DD, where you're flying around huge environments may have stuttered slightly. I think you should be ok for the most part.

Just heads up, Kairo on Steam has gotten Rift support! Haven't had the chance to test it out yet, but very much looking forward to giving it a playthrough tonight. It seems very much the kind of game I would love to play with in OR.

Hi folks,

I've just added what I'd probably call experimental level support of the Occulus Rift to my game Kairo. I've just released a patch so anyone with the Steam version of the game will be able to activate Rift support from the settings menus.

I've not yet recompiled the demo versions of the game with this support in, but I'll get that done in the next couple of days. So everyone will be able to try it out without having to buy the game.

I put a fair amount of time into getting this working, an especially large amount of time rebuilding how my GUI was done, but I don't really consider it complete yet. However a lot of people had been wanting to try it out so I figured I'd release it as it stands now and take feedback to make improvements.

Please try New Vegas as well, as some on reddit claimed it worked too. If it works, and the ui/menus etc... are legible, I will drop the money on Tridef the moment after you post. Fallout: NV in Rift, is my second killer app, right behind Minecraft.

Thanks for the info. I'm fine with running things at lower settings if I have to, so it sounds like I'll be just fine. I think I'll pre-order later this week :)

Iribe: "It [the consumer version] is better than what I thought it would be.
A lot of problems have been solved that we didn’t know we
would solve in this first consumer experience."

Luckey: "When you said, “So is that what we’re going to be consumerizing?”
The reason I said, “Not really” is because what we’re making into a consumer

What people have seen is nothing compared to what’s coming."

I suppose we already knew this, but nevertheless, it's reassuring to hear their enthusiasm towards the consumer version 1.0.

I told myself I need to ignore this thread until at least a few months down the line. But after seeing this... Ah hell! Hype level rising.

I'll poke about with it more later. Fallout 3 worked pretty well for about five minutes, before freezing. Not sure if that's TriDef related. VATS was quite legible, but you couldn't see the HUD elements in the bottom corners at all, like your health etc. This isn't an issue in Doom 3, but radiation levels could make it more so here.

I'd want to figure out a way to turn off aiming up and down with the mouse too, even if temporarily, as you can in Doom 3. Scale was pretty good. I'll try some more stuff after dinner and maybe poke about with Fallout 3 again too.

They havent as of last week. $98 UPS fees to BC.

Just bought and started playing Kairo and it is a STEAL at $5.00 if you're playing with the Rift. The atmosphere is creepy, but an engaging, not scary kind of creepy. I have to say, I've played quite a few games using my Rift, but there are only a couple that have actually made me giddy while playing them, and I'm not easily impressed by any means. If you have or have a Rift on order, get Keiro as one of your go to demos.

Here is a list of my go-to games so far that truly stand out (in order of when to try them for people who are still getting their VR legs or haven't gotten their Rift yet):

Proton Pulse - A great way to get started. Everything is stationary so you just have to look around, plus it's a really fun game to play and I look forward to the next update.

Blue Marble - Pick your favorite song and enjoy. Here is a good online ogg converter.

Kairo - Perfectly integrated for the rift. A simple exploration game with a lot of atmosphere. Works with a 360 controller.

Half Life 2 - No brainer. M+K controls feel natural. Mouse has an independent aim from the headtracking until you reach the edge of the screen. Best option possible IMO.

Lunar Flight - Make sure you watch this tutorial. It was hard for me at first. Don't even use the right control stick, but don't be afraid to turn left or right using the left stick (a mistake I made early on). I put this one last because it requires the most patience and I've found that growing impatient in the Rift while not yet accustomed to it can lead to disorientation and nausea in most cases.

PS - For those who are just starting. Make it a point to breath. I say this because I have shown it to a lot of people and with every single one, I've caught them forgetting to breath normally. It's funny how you have to remind someone to breath just because you strap a VR device to their face.

Edit:

I agree. I'm really glad an independent, passionate crew headed by Palmer is the driving force behind this kind of tech. It's been a while since technology has made this kind of forward progress, and the fact that they're keeping their software so open ended in terms of accessibility and functionality is awesome. I look as it like a leap from 2D to 3D (1993-94 with the first Playstation and release of Doom). That's almost 20 years ago...

Hahaha.. so true, so true :)

Man, Kairo is really cool to play around in the Rift. Runs smoothly, looks great, lots of atmosphere, and just the right pace for VR. Menus still need some tweaking but other than that this may be the must play officially supported Rift game for the time being if you're not into the hectic pace of FPS or simulation style games.

Definitely check this one out if you haven't.

Forgive me if this has already been asked/answered a bunch, but is there any sort of projected release of the consumer version?

I wouldn't imagine it would be any sooner than late next year, but I'm curious if there has been any official word on it yet.

I loved the game. Some people don't like it. Either way, with OR it's going to be a trippy experience.

I tried TriDef with Bioshock 2 also. It worked okay once I followed the FOV instructions on TriDef's forums. The lighting was kind of janky even with the disabled shadows.

I wouldn't recommend buying TriDef just for the Oculus support, just yet... but they've made promising first steps.

Thanks for experimenting man!

Also, and i'm sure he'll post here in time, Piratepwnsninja did a whole side-by-side last night using Skyrim Vireio and Skyrim Tridef. He only briefly told me about it, but he seemed to think Tridef just killed Vireio in over-all quality... at least in Skyrim.

The guys have been dropping hints here and there...

At this point, I'm expecting a platform launch with the Rift... motion controller, motion capturing camera, 1080p+ HMD, full rotation + translational tracking, body motion clip (i.e. detects your body relative to your head) ~ $500.

Essentially every bit they'll need to pull off full body immersion VR... as for movement - it'll be on the spot walking with camera capture.

The ideal here is that you get all this gear... go into a MMORPG, and start walking around the space.. and when you want to dance... *you* dance. No precanned animations.

I bought Kairo on Steam a while back. I feel like it's sort of a Myst-lite meets M.C.Escher game. The puzzles are mostly easy as far as I know, but I did get stuck on one, never went back, and haven't finished the game yet.

Hey guys, this is potentially a huge thing and I thought it would be good to share here.

There's currently an Indiegogo campaign that is funding the release of a DX11 wrapper that will allow fixes to be applied to DX11 games.

As it stands, unless the game has perfect 3D implementation by default, we don't really have any way to fix it. If the IndieGoGo reaches funding, then we will.

The campaign itself is for a release of the wrapper for perfect Bioshock Infinite 3D support but they've said it can be modified to work with theoretically any DX11 game so it can be fixed. As you all know, proper 3D support is essential for OR and this is the first step towards getting great Rift support in DX11 games.

It's got 10 days left and needs to raise $1400 more. I just did my part and threw some money in. I think this is a great project that could really help the Rift in the future and it needs more attention because as of now, it has next to zero.

The scale looks pretty realistic when viewed on the Rift, though the 3D is a bit screwed up in the video or something (a bit of double vision going on).

This is an interesting tech, though I don't know what the applications are beyond...I don't know, a site where you pay them $29.99 a month and get that months models or something else like that. I'm sure there's a market, but it's not for me :P

I've got a brand new one of these showing up tomorrow (to replace my defective one). If anyone's interested I'll sale it for $400 (includes shipping). I'll ship it off asap after payment via USPS priority.

Just curious, you selling a second one or tired of it?

Actually neither. I've had some unexpected stuff come up and honestly I need the money for some other things at the moment. Down the road I fully intend to either buy another dev kit (or maybe wait for the consumer version)

Good luck, I know what you mean, I've had some hard times also recently :( hope all works out and you can delve back into the Rift.
