Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

Do I have to sign for the package or will ups leave it at my door?
I think the UPS tracking page may tell you, but I am guessing it will be signature required since it is relatively expensive equipment. You can use the UPS website to schedule a pickup somewhere if you want.

I believe this model is originally from this guys work here:

Lots more scans of the same model. Some NSFW.

edit: yep, same guys work, and you can download the demo in the video here:

Alright, let's see how weird this is.

Edit: Yep...this is the future. There's something a'stirring in mah loins.

Se tempted. Must.. wait.. for 1080p...

Is the Rift still backordered? I gave up on selling mine because I thought I had missed the boat.

I should...I should totally sell this off to fund my PS4 :P before the 1080p version comes out and I'm all "What am I supposed to do with this old piece of junk now!?"

I just left a note on my doorstep that said "please leave package on doorstep" and signed it. worked like a charm!

on a side note: i am seriously effected by nausea, apparently -_- I'm gonna slowly try to train myself and hope that it works.

Minecraft with the rift is probably one of the coolest things I've ever seen :D

I suggest not playing more than 15-20 minutes a day to start with, if you're feeling nauseous. You should find it getting much better after a few days, as long as you have your IPD set correctly. Just don't try to power through it in one day since it won't work and you will be sucked (tm).

I think I heard Minecrift is the best/only way to use the Oculus with Minecraft...does it work with the latest version of Minecraft? It's almost funny that a mod works but Mojang didn't do it officially, even though they were some of the earlier people getting Rifts. :P

I only tried minecrift with the 1.4.2, but I think the 1.5.7 came out recently. Worked fantastic. Found myself staring at the sky in awe until a skeleton killed me. The experience makes it hard to concentrate on building a hideout.

One thing I'm somewhat confused about, what exactly do people mean when they say the picture is blurry? Does it not look like high definition at all or what? I mean, it can't be like holding a 3DS to your face.

And it's August now! Hopefully mine comes in this month as it is supposed to.

Not only does Minecrift work with the newest version of Minecraft, but they've actually idiot proofed it with a nice installer that installs the Rift mod, and all other required mods, with one download/click. :)

As for Notch not being there to do it first... At this point Mojang doesn't seem to care. They're enjoying their fortunes and are pulling a Blizzard/WoW where the insane income a game reaps isn't remotely funneled back into making that product the best thing it can be.

Where is this? Last one I saw still needed to be extracted into magic launcher (not complicated, but still)

These are the guys who made Razer Hydra.

Five wireless tracking modules, thats alot. You could do crazy stuff with it. And Kickstarter this month, what will be the price?

Well, technically they're the guys who made the tracking algorithms and such for the Hydra; I know there have been complaints about Razer's build quality, but hopefully that shouldn't be an issue here.

I was wondering when we would hear about this again! Hopefully it won't be too expensive.

I haven't used a 3ds, but you can see the lines between the pixel at the center of your view in the dev kit. It is noticable, but expected. Personally I find the blur when you move your head more destracting. The dev kit display spends about 20ms updating it's images, which provides a blurry effect on the final image.

All these things being said, trying out the rift leaves me convinced that this is the most innovating thing we will see in the next five years. I now know how big a head crab is. Watching a damn ceiling is fascinating to me nowdays. It is truly an entirely new interface not comparable to a screen.

It's blurry on multiple levels. First of all, there's not a whole lot of resolution, so things are just low-res and kind of blurry in general. Second, since there aren't a whole lot of pixels, objects in the distance don't take up very many pixels at all, making them incredibly blurry. The second is a bigger problem in a lot of the games I've tried (Enemy in the distance? You're lucky to see them as a slight blur). There's also motion blur, but it somewhat mimics the natural motion blur you'd see anyway. Lastly, if the IPD isn't adjusted per game, there is blurriness related to things not being quite perfect on that front (the same goes for if you've got the wrong eyecups on for your vision).

All of these problems should be improved (if not eliminated) for a retail release. The only thing I'd expect to still be there is the motion blur, but everything else is either fixed as a side effect of increased resolution or better game support (IPD auto-setting across multiple games for instance).

Thanks guys, hopefully it doesn't bother me too much. The one thing I am worried about is the lens adjustment, especially because I wear glasses and hate contacts.

Who has the latest order to ship out in terms of number? I'm like 60050ish. And one last question, can the Oculus Rift do 120 FPS?

It's 60 FPS, and people on /r/oculus with order numbers in the 56000s have been recieving them.

It is a 120hz panel though right? So technically, it could pull off 120hz in 2D mode yes?

It's a 60 hz panel. The way they create the 3D effect by rendering each eye's viewpoint on it's own part of the screen means that the 3D effect can work properly without requiring a 120 hz display.

Ah okay, that's cool - thanks for the info.

Oh fuck. I tried Half Life 2 with the Rift + Hydra today... Previously, I had only really messed around with the demos and stuff.

I'm tapped out. Ten minutes in HL2 and I'm sick as a dog. (It probably doesn't help that I'm still a bit nauseous from chemo a while back...)

But damn. I've never been motion sick before, not from cars or rides or anything... But this definitely did me in. I hope I can eventually get over it because, other than almost puking, the experience was incredible. Loving the Hydra+Rift combo.

I too thought I would be immune to motion sickness because I never experienced it in gaming nor real life. But the nausea and the pressing headache I got from messing around for hours at a time with the Oculus Rift was so bad that I was afraid it was going to stick (it did for almost 3 days..). I never use it for more than 10-15 minutes at a time now.

In most cases you don't have to use glasses or contacts to take in the experience, for short bursts of use it's enough to use the most fitting pair of lense-cups in the package.

Take your time with it and you'll get used to it. I had the same effect. Get used to demos first and then ease your way into HL2

To be fair... when my mother was going through chemo, she would get motion sick from standing up our of a chair. It obviously does incredible things to your equilibrium, etc...

Does anyone know how to free the mouse to aim vertically as well as horizontally in Minecrift? I'm not talking about vertical aim where moving the mouse vertically also affects your head movement, but more like it is set up in HL2, where moving the mouse to the far left/right will turn you, but vertical aim movement doesn't change your orientation, it just aims.

Any help would be much appreciated. The default setup seems to highly limit the amount of control I have.

Edit: Solved my problem. Options ---> VR Settings --> Move/Aim Controls --> Keyhole Height Option

Most people seem to get better if they play in bits at a time...I assume you're using a good IPD if you're playing games that let you change it? Nausea is normal, but headache is NOT a good sign.

Uh, so mine just came in the mail the other day.

I feel really dumb asking, but how do I install this SDK? Do I need Visual Studio to run these solutions? I'm missing files if I try to run anything, I know there's something I need to install, but uh, having some trouble figuring out what exactly :\

All I can find is: "The Visual Studio 2010 solution and project files are provided with the SDK: Samples/LibOVR_Samples_Msvc2010.sln is the main solution that allows you to build and run all of the samples." and then we go right to "Your developer kit is unpacked and plugged in, you’ve installed the SDK, and you are ready to go. Where is the best place to begin?"

Got my rift on friday and been playing around with it all day today. Totally awesome. The VR theater was the first thing to 'get me' in that after a few minutes I instinctively tried to put my arm on the arm rest that didn't exist, followed by the half second shock of oh right... its not there.

The roller coaster however did nothing for me, not sure why.

Now I've set up half life 2 fully calibrated to play through. But one question I have is that generally for all the games/demos I've tried, anything that is even a medium distance away looks 'shimmery' like the pixles are kind of moving around a little bit. Is that just a symptom of low res/screen door effect, or is it something I'm doing and need to calibrate/correct for?

It was especially noticeable in the chain link fences in the very beginning of half life 2.

Are you trying to just run the demos or compile the code yourself? .sln files are Visual Studio solution files. If you just want to run the pre-compiled samples then what you want is \OculusSDK\Samples\OculusWorldDemo\Release\OculusWorldDemo.exe

it's the low res screen + the screen door effect, yes. If you can super sample it helps somewhat, but nothing removes it completely. If you aren't already, crank up the AA, and run at 1920 x 1200 and see if that helps.

HL2 won't let me set the resolution higher than 1280x800 (which is the native resolution of the rift anyway right?).

I just get "The program can't start because D3DCOMPILER_43.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem." every time. I guess I'm supposed to get an older version of DirectX or something? EDIT: Currently running some DirectX Web Installer and seeing if I get it. EDIT2: Got it.

I have to push these bad boys as far from my face as possible, otherwise my eyelashes touch the lenses and oil them up real nice and make everything blurry :\

Have you tried any medication? I take Dramamine for flights and long car trips. I get nausea easily and it takes care of it. I anticipate that when I try the Rift, I'm going to feel sick, and that's what I plan on taking.

Very interesting. Nice resolution, and it has a wider field of view than the Rift from what I've read. Unfortunately they have no plans to take it to market, it's just for the DIY crowd, mostly as experimentation (I read that translation on reddit, not sure how accurate it is, or if they really do plan to take it to market).

I love Rift and greatly anticipating the consumer release, but I can't wait until competition really starts picking up in the VR space. Hopefully we can get a standard to have games conform to when supporting HMD's.

I had a dream last night that I've ordered the development kit and I've received it today. I was just about to try it out but then I woke up :(

Is this a sign? Should I order a development kit now? But I know I would regret it once a 1080p version is out... -.-
