Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 announced, up for preorder (based on Crystal Cove)

Does that include custom fees?
Can anyone please tell me if I'll have to pay additional custom fees if ordering in the UK or is it included in the cost as they use a European distributor?

I hope it doesn't, because I have ordered 2 packages from USA in the past and both times it was hold in custom offices, meaning a trip of 1 hour to the offices, 1 hour of waiting and then 31% of the price as taxes (19%) and custom office extra (12%). That would mean 110€ more to pay :(

Yes, but it's rough from what I've read. Hopefully there will be more polish by the time this is released.

So, is there a "spec" thread somewhere or is this kind of the unofficial DK2 thread? I know I'll have to upgrade my GPU and get some more RAM, but I'd rather not rebuild my whole system (and that probably isn't likely).

HD 6870
8 GB DDR3
i5 - 3570k
SSD

I'm hoping for a decent video card around $300-400 in a couple months (when DK2 comes) and I'll order some more RAM shortly. What is the most dependent piece of hardware, the video card I assume?

Heh, our setups are mostly identical except I have a 7850. I'm thinking of upgrading my gpu and am not typically that up-to-date on what's the best thing out there value wise, so I just googled and found this helpful guide that was published this month on Toms Hardware. Seems like they know their stuff. Sucks that the cryptocurrency craze has been hiking prices on gpus like crazy, but there's still good picks to be found in your price range it seems. Take a look, hopefully it's helpful. Seems like the GTX 770 would be a good fit for you: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107-4.html

I'm personally waiting for the 870.

I think (think not know) that they include the neccesary taxes in your order. You have to specify your country and the put about 70 $ on that for me. That would be the VAT here. I hope nothing else comes on top ;)

By the way guys, the oled could be a pentile screen. 2 subpixels instead of 3. So it's not really 2.25x sharper then.

Cool, thanks. I'll definitely keep an eye on that card. I may need to up my spending limit if the need REALLY needs to happen but I'll be happy with a "good" experience and not top of the line!

I was totally going for it by $350 (250€), but then with taxes it is $480 (350€)! Fuck it!

I preordered... I'm weak :(

Haha exactly the same.

Already closed the tab, "fucking 100 euro more..."

"fuck it, re-open tab, just do it and be done with it." ;)

Don't know how my Macbook Pro would handle this so I guess I'm going to have to upgrade my PC. I better get some great porn games with all this money I'm spending.

Same here... I'm really looking forward to putting on demos - watching peoples reactions to the original DK was possibly the best part of picking one up :D

Can anyone answer whether UK has to pay customs upon receiving the product?

Certainly shouldn't have to, Oculus now charge the taxes themselves (in the past they didn't and left it to customs in the respective country). It should be sent with the tax already paid and therefore no need for customs to do anything surely. Otherwise what are Oculus charging tax/duty's for?

Great! Just ordered, regretting not ordering hours ago when it first went up, I really want to get in on the first batch :(

Do we know a time/units approximation of how many preorders got into the first batch back for the DK1?

I would be surprised if by preordering 5 hours after the creation of this thread (which probably was close enough to when the preorder was opened), people get into second or even third batch.

Just had a look to make sure, the tax they're charging me ($77) matches exactly what I should pay in value added tax in my country for the total cost of the item + delivery. Other fees are normally only paid if customs have to determine the tax and collect it themselves (or collect it through a third party like Royal Mail).

That's great to hear, thanks a lot for telling me!

Yeah thats good to hear. I still haven't ordered yet due to these concerns. A few hours of procrastination has probably cost us a few months extra waiting for our order.

I really hope not. I'll be so angry with myself if waiting several hours out of customs fear got me delayed by several months lol.

Ordered!!!

Lets be realistic here the retail version probably wont be out until this time next year at the earliest and for £270 odd quid im happy to get DK2 now and enjoy the new experience

People who think that Sony's Morpheus will be the end of OR need to wake up, Morpheus will only compatible with the ps4, games will be no way near as technically advance as OR games on the PC due to the limit of the ps4's power. Also how willing will the majority of PS4 owners going to be to shell out $300-400 on a peripheral and because of this how likely are 3rd parties devs going to be to develop games for the Morpheus.....Sony will be in the same boat as MS are with the Kinect in trying to convince devs to develop games for the Morpheus if there isnt a massive user base!

Thats said with Sony entering the game only strengthens the growing VR market, and hopefully both devices are similar enough to allow for 3rd party games to be achievable across the PS4 and PC!

Man that's pretty cheap for something like this. How can someone complain about the pricing of a developer's kit. Usually developer kit models of anything have ridiculous pricing.

$520 aud shipped. My brain kept saying no, but my hands just kept clicking and typing.

I really can't afford it, but that's a problem for future me.

Oh god I hope this VR thing is as good as the hype suggests

Same here. I'm thinking I'll probably upgrade my GPU first, before jumping into VR. I doubt my 660Ti would handle this, lol.

Yep, thinking the same myself, was soo temped but don't run before you can walk springs to mind, need to beef my system up first, plus I know I won't be able to resist the CV model and the Sony headset, it all adds up.

I know for the real thing I'll definitely need to beef up my system
Currently rocking
gtx 670 2gb
i5 4670k
8gb dd3 ram

Hopefully I'll get in on the initial batch, I plan to sell it several months before the consumer version hits (hopefully my losses are minimal) and then get a new gpu and the consumer oculus together.

To those who are worried about the pc specs, you should see the reactions of people playing low poly demos with the vastly inferior first dk. I think lowering the graphic detail of current games won't stop them from making you insane at the level of immersion.

Wait what, did I miss something. Why would this thing require more horsepower than running 1080p on a monitor. Why the need to upgrade.

If you need something better than your pc to run the consumer version, Oculus will be doomed to fail. Those are ridiculous requirement imo.

I mean I'm going to upgrade for the consumer kit which will be higher res than 1080p. Even for dk2 which is 1080p I doubt I can maintain 75fps with high details for current games.

Unless you're trying to minimize latency, just get another 670 for SLI and you should be rocking most games in Oculus.

Amazing stuff announced, pretty psyched!

Think about it. Games will target 120 fps for hardware lower than yours.

You will be fine.

Okay so my specs are

i5 2500k
Gtx 750 Ti
8gigs of DDR3 RAM

should only need to upgrade my GPU when the time comes, heard the 800 series is set for around May?

All this HW speculation or posting of specs really isn't helpful, or rather it can't be done in a general way.

What you need for VR is highly dependent on what software you are using, and what settings and image quality you are prepared to accept. Just like PC gaming in general really, with the difference that you'll need "more hardware" for the same thing in VR as you would need on a screen.

Lol that's basically my current PC (i was about to get a 750ti to tie me over to the 8xx series)

$300, even $350, is nothing given the potential of VR done truly right.

It doesn't even have to be first person. Can you imagine a VR'd Shadow of the Colossus? You are a few feet away from the Wanderer's shoulder, but you can still feel the immense scale of the Colossi in a way that cannot be transmitted through a 2D screen.

Jesus.

Not before a couple of hours ago did I ever think I would buy a fucking OR devkit.
Just hope it's worth it GAF...

Used my PS4 money to buy this too:(

I'm gonna buy a PS4 anyway :lol
