Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 announced, up for preorder (based on Crystal Cove)

Pre-ordered! What a nice feeling! :)

I was hoping that my next VR experience would have something higher than 1080p resolution.. But all other specs are upped a lot more, so this will do until the consumer version comes along with something even better.

Awesome! I'm same as you just an enthusiast but the Rift was my first VR experience, and I couldn't resist either despite it being a dk :-)

Putting the DK1 on for the first time and trying to few early demos that day was on the level of me playing Mario 64 for the first time, or opening my NES on christmas. It was one of those experiences that I'll never forget.

I have played Sonic and Metro on my Rift using TriDef, and I found the experience very lacking, personally. Playing a 3D game on a virtual screen (ala Steam VR but in 3D) is a much better way to go, imho. Added support for something like Sonic that offers SBS 3D natively in game, should be pretty simple actually.

Interesting, so you've gotten games like Sonic and Metro working in 3D using Steam VR? How does the performance compare to TriDef? If there's a decent fps boost I'll def look into that as an option.

Does everyone else have this "error" on their order information page too?

So the total cost of ordering this to the UK is 462 dollars... is there an additional customs fee or did they include that in the order?
Part of the cost is Fees, Duties & Taxes: $ 77.00 so I'm not sure if that's customs included already.

But you do have to have the full amount on card right?
From what I read earlier in the thread, probably. It seems they charge the full amount to check, refund it, and then charge $50.

(I ordered via Paypal so I can't check)

Edit:
Or not, as per the post below.

Same here man. When I first put on the Tuscany demo and slipped the Rift on for the first time I was stunned how instantly my eyes adjusted and took everything in. I just kept repeating "omg" over and over again while my gf sat nearby lol. I really couldn't believe what I was seeing. It's that sense of scale that felt so accurate that really hooked me. I love that we're still seeing top shelf demos being released. Have you tried the Kite and Lightning Station demo or Technolust VR? Those are two I just discovered that totally reinvigorated my interest in the medium. Really hope we see a full fledged VR title release this year, hopefully either Star Citizen or The Gallery Six Elements. Such an exciting time!

I ordered with CC. I only have $50 charged to the account. The rest will be taken out when it actually ships.

If you pay with PayPal, all of the money is taken right away. So regardless, you'll pay the same amount in the end, but with CC you don't pay it all until it actually ships.

I hope my eye sight won't be a big problem. I war glasses (-1.75/1.50) and I will try it out without it, because they won't fit in.

I can't see why? I mean, it's not shipping until July, they can't freeze that kind of money for that long anyway.

Edit: I don't understand this kind of stuff anyway, so I shouldn't engage..

I wear glasses (astigmatism even) had no problem with not using glasses with devkit 1, should be even less of a problem with devkit 2. Of course everyone is different, but I think most people did just fine without glasses with DK1

The first dev kit came with magnifying lenses that you could attach so you don't really need to wear glasses while you play anyway.

Could someone who has experience with the first version answer these for me?

- I play PC games from my couch on a TV...does that pose a problem being about 10 or so feet away from the PC as far as connections go?

- Do these new oled displays have the same mura blotches when the screen gets dark, or did they use a different kind that has no issues?

- 2 pairs of vision lenses

That's included in the Devkit 2. I hope it will be the normal lenses and -1.5 for both eyes.

You'd need a long display and USB cable for DK1, since the cable from the box to the kit is rather short. DK2 includes a 10' cable.

The DK1 is LCD, so obviously not, but I think it's highly unlikely for DK2. It probably uses a high-end phone (or "phablet") display.

It's strange, but they only charged 50$ and didn't reserve anything on my Visa creditcard.

Good to hear, thanks for the info guys!

They didn't reserve the rest of the money right?

If you choose to pay with a credit card, we will immediately charge a $50 deposit and put an authorization hold on the remainder of the balance, including shipping and taxes. That balance will be automatically charged at the time of shipment

Not sure I'd feel comfortable ordering without the full amount on the card.

Yea I remember my first moments in the Tuscany demo too. Looking up at the ceiling was like "woah." Then I glanced to my side and looked out the window, and I just sat there in amazement for a moment at the feeling of tangible depth i had between me and the windowframe, and the trees in the scene outside the window. But the moment where it really clicked was when I stepped outside and followed a moving butterfly with my head as it floated around me. Tracking a virtual object like that in a virtual space was so different than any special effect or illusion I had ever seen before, I knew I had something special.

This is almost like saying there's a TV war because more than one company makes TVs.

Cause there is some common VR standard and you are free choose device which would connect to your PC or console, eh?

This very thread confirms OC guys realize, it's a war.

I think I'll hope the original kits will become super cheap second hand, and pick one of those up to hold me over until the consumer version. When the makers are telling me not to buy one, I feel I really should follow their advice.

Anyone still getting errors on the checkout page? And if so, any idea what is going wrong exactly?

I tried placing an order and got the following errors.

The first error said :

"Required information is missing or contains errors:"

I tried changing something and ordering again, and I received:

"Transaction has been declined [Error: A duplicate transaction has been submitted]."

I noticed my credit card was charged $372, but it was immediately refunded.

Could happen, but I personally really doubt it. There aren't that many out there, and people who got the DK1 are probably also predisposed to holding on to it. I know I am.

Q: I just ordered my Oculus Rift Development Kit 2. When is it going to ship out to me?

A: We are currently scheduled to start shipping the Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 in July of 2014. We will ship units in the order in which purchases were completed, with consideration of the number of development kits available in each region.
What does that mean? I live in Switzerland and if only 50 guys from Switzerland ordered this thing before me I will get mine 100% sure in July? ^^

This has been one of the hardest decisions. I've been tempted to pull the trigger since DK1, but I feel as though it won't be the optimal experience until CV1. I'm hovering over the purchase button now, but I just can't press it yet...

I'm a nut for any Rift demo that uses floating particles like dust motes, that's the kind of depth that really gets to me. The demo Colliding Galaxies is one of the coolest for this, just watching these miniature galaxies slowly drift towards and away from each other, while standing on this Tron-like neon blue grid. Seems like you can just reach out and grab all the tiny stars. Stuff like that just makes it seem like you're on the beginnings of the holodeck :-)

Any word on if the new kits have improved lenses geared towards people with myopia (near sightedness)?

Since myopic eyes naturally have a shorter focusing distance, it would be nice to have OR lenses designed for that in mind so that they can be used without the need for contacts or glasses.

What’s included:

- Headset
- 2 pairs of vision lenses
...
Only 2 pairs of lenses. So it will be normal lenses and for short-sighted.

will I have any troubles running current Rift demos with my rig?

i5-2500k (can't overclock it due to a bad case, already gets rather hot)
GTX670 DirectCU II
8 GB RAM

I'm waiting for the GTX 800 series to get a completely new rig, and wasn't planing on getting the Oculus before that but.... I'm really tempted to get the DK2 now

I thought this too, but it's $350 (unless you have those crazy taxes) and I will get at least a few months of enjoyment out of it. I have spent that much just on a couple dinners and a trip to the Zoo or if I take the family to a movie that's $30-40.

If the price was at $500+, it would be a lot easier to say no, but to be able to see this in action months before widespread release (I'll buy CIV1 too) is enough for me to go all-in.

I also have a Fanatec racing setup and Arsetto Corsa ... so that is also really pushing this purchase. I will need to get a new vid-card but that was inevitable this year sometime anyway.

Honestly, if you have the money and are an enthusiast, I don't see why not. Sony's and Oculus' VR isn't going to be out for AT LEAST 8 months, this gives you a 1/2 year to experiment and play with it ... and sell it if it really comes down to it. You won't be out much.

Oh yeah, tried both of those.

Really loved the K&N Station demo that transports you to the bat cave. Very, very cool Fifth Element vibe.

You really need to download and try Affected. Probably the absolute best horror experience yet on the Rift.
