Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 announced, up for preorder (based on Crystal Cove)

Well, that at least means that they're still really aiming for 2015, which is good.

They said something about 2016, but I don't think that they're planning to release it in 2016. I am guess that they're planning at late 2015, currently?

couldn't timewarp be used as a general mechanism to allow a faster perceived framerate in any game, not just VR related?

Yes it could, but I'm not sure it's worth it.
There are alternative uses of the principle done for different reasons, like Killzone Shadowfall's multiplayer does the same kind of warping on every alternate vertical line of the screen and renders a fresh image for the remaining lines.

I remember something from a few years ago where the motion vectors for each pixel were drawn for the next frame before drawing anything else, and while the next frame was being finished they generated an intermediate frame by combining the last frame and more up to date motion data somehow, I'm not sure if that made it into a game.

I don't know if I'm crazy or just insane ... but I did do some preliminary Google searches regarding a fan that could be controlled by my Fanatec Pedals, specifically the throttle ... sooo ... a bird is a logical next step.

Wonder if there is some USB fan I could control through an application linked to the controller or speed in the game ...

MY CREATION WILL BE GLORIOUS!

This is seriously stupid.
EDIT: I see, it's an art project by a group of students. Well, then it's okay I guess.

As a commercial product, yeah it would be. But I think it actually looks fun, I'd love to try a VR flying machine like that or similar in something like an arcade or Dave & Buster's.

That is seriously cool. Just a student project sure, but imagine wearing a full force-feedback armature. Your wingtips controlled by individual fingers, which get ruffled and buffeted by the wind. A scent atomiser giving off the smell of salt and warm grass. Soaring over the cliffs, finding thermals and updrafts which make a perceptible lurch in your motion as you edge into them with one wing. Glorious. I can't wait :)

3d video capture using three Kinects:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ghgbycqb92c

It's pretty incredible. The movement that you see is not generated from object tracked data; i.e., there's no skeletal model, only the raw stream from the cameras. Gives it a rather nice feel of "presence", more real than high-quality mocap in a way.

It looks pretty bad at first, compared to similar "here are my arms" demos from before, but then you start picking up on the details, and it looks better and better, especially when he switches to a 3rd person view. It comes across as very natural, even with how glitchy it actually is.

PC Kinect 2 needs to get here soon!

I think the interesting news here is that they're saying that Crystal Cove is only 50%[as good] of this secret prototype they've got running.

Exciting.

I hope the CV will make the Virtual Cinema Experience really great.

I remember trying it on the CV1 and, while it wasnt suited at all to watch movies on the CV 1 (too low res), the feeling that you are in a cinema, looking at a 20m screen was there.

Cant wait anymore :D

I'm pretty sure Oculus is now moving to making their own custom panels rather than smartphone screens now. So I'm sure the statements saying the consumer Rift will be tons better than DK2 have some foundation in reality.

Fantastic tracking fidelity, but there's still quite a bit of lag.

What's displayed on the monitor isn't generally representative of the actual lag inside the Rift.

It's like that with every video. Even head movements show a bit of lag (which isn't there in the Tuscany demo).

Great video.

Where can I find more information about this method of control? I would have imagined VR fans to be more excited for some akin to what the Power Glove seemed to promise 25 years ago. I did back the STEM controller last year, but I can't really complain about more/better control methods coming out.
I'm excited about this stuff, but it still seems a ways off in terms of seeing widespread and full fledged application. We're still very much in an experimental phase with the potential control schemes and its gonna take a while before anything really starts to stand out as a clear standard setter.

Is there an official OculusGAF or VRGAF-Thread btw?
So excited to finally get my first VR experience soon(ish).

Getting a DK2? If you're going in fresh with a DK2 it will surely be an awesome experience. I'm slightly jealous of those who will be using DK2 and eventually CV1 for their first taste of VR. As a DK1/Hydra owner I'm sure I'll still enjoy the vast improvements, but now I know what to expect in a way I didn't while waiting all those months for my first taste.

Yep, bud convinced me to get one (read: we skyped about 2h haha) and I'm really enjoying his VR streams in anticipation of DK2.
He's doing Among The Sleep right now btw if you're / somebody is intersted (German tho http://www.hitbox.tv/VortexLive).

I'm in the same boat. I posted a topic about glove controllers a while back, but it was a bit messy and it flopped.

Found this post by the same person on MTBS.

Below is a video of the system working with an Oculus DK1. It features 19 IMU sensors working in a FK system to capture the upper body down to the fingers with 6DOF. One is on your chest, two on the upper arms, two on the forearms, two on the hands, four on the thumbs (2 on each), and eight on the remaining fingers. The sensors are accurate to a tenth of a degree and work great, we don't have to "smooth" the data at all resulting in a responsive and reliable track. Also, by rooting the system with the biped's pelvis and using the chest sensor to drive the upper body as well as using the Oculus' sensor to drive the head, we're able to give 6DOF to the DK1.

He claims a dev kit will be under a $1000 per this tweet.
