Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 announced, up for preorder (based on Crystal Cove)

Trying to prepare a bit for my DK2 and I'm not really sure how to go about this mirroring thing on another monitor so outsiders can see what's going on.
I had heard that they added some kind of special mode just for this, where it's not a direct mirror, but a more traditional single-screen view (sans distortion) rather than the current double-barrel display, for people viewing in the room, and for folks on YouTube to be able to record a more "normal" view for their Rift videos.

I haven't been able to find anything specific about it, though, so I guess you could consider it rumor unless someone has a link (I wasn't able to find anything, but I haven't looked very hard).

with the stem controller delayed until october, i can certainly live with an august delivery of the rift, hydra was way better than a 360 pad for the dk1

*Sniff* Decided to cancel my order for DK2...

Was a tough-ish choice, but I think I want to jump into VR when its perfect, and my hype for it has sorta died down and at this moment I think I can survive the wait for the consumer version (Hopefully!)

Hope everyone else can survive the wait and hope you all enjoy it! Will be looking at impressions and reviews!

Well, I suggest you stay away from this thread after they're shipped, then, because it will probably be full of people talking about how awesome it is and how they're so glad they ordered one.

<------ Ordered one.

Ha ha nah I don't mind that. Have no doubt it will be awesome and look forward to seeing how much so. It's more just justifying to me whether I'm really desperate for one soon and if it's worth waiting for something (more) perfect, and since I pre ordered, hype has fell for me and atm, I feel I can wait another year.
Also if Morpheus supports PC... (which isn't so likely), but if they do going for that.

oh thank god Couch Knights seems to run well enough on my machine at the moment (100fps in 1080p), at least I'll have something to immediately toy with when I get this thing

Ha ha, well Oculus seem to be cracking down on that, so wouldnt be so easy, that and I did order April 2nd, so wasnt even sure when I was to get it.

They're cracking down on people selling pre-orders. But I can't see them trying to stop people selling it after its their property, doubt they could even if they wanted to.

Guess that is the best decision for any non-devs.
Though I know a lot of people just order the DK2 to try it out and then sell it after a couple of weeks.

I tried the DK1 before and while I would love to try out the newest version, it would just be as I said "Trying it out".
I rather wait for the real experience with the CV1.

And more fresh news today...

Unreal Engine 4.3 release update details:

  • Upgraded to new Oculus SDK (0.3.3-pre.1 SDK), with latest goodies!
  • Oculus Rift DK2 supported out of the box, with full motion tracking
  • New direct rendering path and time-warping, which significantly reduces latency on the device.
  • Check out our new “Couch Knights” sample, created to show off the new Oculus Rift DK2’s capabilities
Oh shit that's awesome! I'm glued to the dev forums and it *really* seemed like Time-warping would slip to 4.4 in the last two weeks.

Kind of glad I don't have a preorder. Dk1 was painful enough. This doesn't seem to be too bad, but we already have the spreadsheets out and trying to second guess oculus' methods, so not too dissimilar :)

Really fancy one, but at this point I think I can wait until they've caught up with preorders so I can just grab one with immediate shipping. So maybe for Christmas. Assuming the consumer version will be Q4 2015, that's still plenty of time to get value from it.

Just put in an order for the second dev kit, will have to make do with the first for now. So excited for the second dev kit and even the first one all over again because I'm getting lasik later today so being able to use the standard lenses should make it a lot more comfortable.

Don't really mind the wait because I'll be going out of state for a month for work anyway in a few weeks.

So guys, in your opinion, how more long should i wait for that thing shipped in France ? Could it add several weeks of delay ?

I guess it mostly depend of where their distribution center are, if they are only in the US ( I sadly guess they are ) it most likely mean 1-4 more weeks ( given how much we paid for the delivery I hope it's the lower end ) for us poor european.

Which is mostly why I find their 1 week delay pretty stupid.

well ok then, i'll enjoy the real world a little more!

So I ordered after 1pm and will almost definitely receive it in August, I live in the UK btw. The thing is, I'm on holiday from the 5th august to 15th august, does anyone know what delivery service they use for the UK, UPS? What I can do to prevent it being sent back to the sender? I won't be able to rearrange delivery while abroad since I won't have that missed delivery slip they would give after the first delivery, plus i don't know if I will have internet while away.

Might be more than a little, what I spoke of is only the delivery itself, we also know that command order won't be perfectly respected for international shipping, probably meaning that international shipment will probably be more spaced out than US ones ( depending on region if not per country I guess ).

Currently 1,194 people in front of me on the Reddit spreadsheet. I'm located in Ohio (USA). Does that bode well for me, or no? I wish there was a master list that had every order on it.

I am getting impatient, but only due to how excited I am. I never tried the DK1, because I had to cancel due to lack of funds at the time, so I am thrilled to be able to try this soon!

According to the list I'm in the top 100, but since "only the first batch is affected" I guess I'll just ship with the rest of the plebes =P

Seriously, I wish they were a bit more transparent but it is what it is. Oculus is a major corporation now so setting my expectations there.

All in all, if it really came down to it, I'd rather have the kit and wait for the SDK. I still need to setup cords, make sure my glasses work with it, make a case for it, etc ... and hug it. Just the little things that could have been accomplished during the 1-4 day wait for the updated SDK.

I understand holding it off for a majority of reasons, if the community (including me) is asking for updates just for shipping estimates, I couldn't imagine the "need for updates" with a borked SDK and all the "MY RIFT DOESN'T PLAY SKYRIM" posts.

And I also think the SDK is probably not going to be ready next week. I think this is the beginning (or cover) to a bigger delay and they'll probably just give us an update in a week about another issue. Not holding my breath, that's for sure!

2nd day Canadians should their's next month :

That means 2nd day anywhere should mean not expect a DK2, considering Canada's proximity to the good ol' USA.

:(

Well, we'll let time for devs to update their demos :p

I ordered at 8:34 first day and in Japan which was supposedly getting some of the first units. That said I wouldn't be mad if it didn't show up till August. I never really expected to get it in July anyway.

Palmer said that this delay will only affect the first shipping (5k devkits). The second batch (also 5k) should ship at end of July.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AsakiLZiXDfLdEFhNXRzMU44VkNZNzlZVEI2NXFTY2c#gid=3

I'm not that early. There are around 400 ahead of me. And the list contains only 1600 people of 45.000 that ordered it.

Edit: Wait, there is an updated list. So there are around 500 ahead of me in the list with 2600 people. There is also a Data & Calculation tab. According to the extrapolated data there were around 5500 orders in the first 2 hours (8-10AM).

Oh, I got mine at 11:20 EST... so I'm actually 8:20am PST. Sweet!

I have a presentation to give later today on some of the more recent Oculus Rift projects out there including my own DIY buttkicker setup. The way I normally write just about anything is that I prefer to post on a forum and kind of have a conversation like a rough draft before I combine it into an article or presentation or whatever. So throughout the day, you might see me writing some random impressions of stuff that has been recently released.

On that note, my transducer came today. The thing is huge! I thought it was going to be puck sized, like a hockey puck. Instead it's more like the size of a stack of 25 CDRs. I have the amp and the stand and everything, all that's left is for the seat to come, which according to its shipping ticket, should arrive tomorrow.

Are you ready for a butt pounding?

*snicker*

Realistically, am I going to get a decent level of performance on the DK2 with a 660 Ti in my rig? I'm guessing not? Just pondering whether it's worth cancelling and getting one later down the line.

Which are unfortunately few and far between nowadays without dropping settings. Bah.

I'll probably regret it if I get it, and regret it if I don't :)

Well there are not too many "real" games yet. Most of the demos are technically less demanding then modern games and I think you should get some decent results. Hal-Life 2 should run fast enough-... ;)

I forgot to ask at the meeting last night and I apologize, but did anybody from this thread show up? We had a great turn out last night with people from Virtuix unexpectedly dropping by, which I really appreciated. Also, Houston Free Press showed up and did an article on our club.

The new meeting place is amazing! That place is an engineers dream. A wall of free 3D printers to use, steel cutters, welders, free wood working tools, tons of ICs. Right when you walk in, a group was building a Mame arcade machine. Open 24 hours, no restrictions, no membership required to attend (but membership required to use the machines). What an awesome venue!

EDIT: Also just backed Kor-FX :D

Just got this email also. Went into panicked mode thinking my order was having some sort of payment issue, but looks like it's all good.

I got one too, but I assumed it was simply an update. I may have to move some money around to make sure I don't run out of cash in my account from the transaction whenever it happens.

The update said this:
Date: Mar 20, 2014 03:56 AM PDT

Status: Pending:Your order is pending. Please see the reason(s) below.

Error(s): Your order is awaiting inventory before it can be fulfilled. We will notify you when it's about to be shipped.

That's not unusual, right? I'm assuming I got in line pretty late so they probably don't have enough right now for that far down.

That's what my order says as well.

To verify our address, I assume they mean actually check to see if things are in order, and if they are, just leave it be? Seemed that way.

Got excited by the e-mail as well.

The wording in the mail and on the site differs a bit which is a bit annoying.
In the mail it tells us to verify our payment instructions but the only way to check-in the 'I hereby authorize Oculus to charge me xxx...' on the site is to enter payment details and clicking submit.

I heard stories where people with DK1 orders who updated ended up back in the line again.
Anyways I re-entered my same CC now as I used to pre-order with. It got charged $1 and received a verification. The payment field (and 'I hereby authorize...') remains at the bottom of the page.

I agree that it is confusing. I think that bottom section is only there if you wish to update your payment info. I visually verified things looked fine and then did nothing. The "verify" step isn't made clear in the e-mail, unfortunately.
