Oculus Rift DK2 Thread

I think I remember reading that while curved displays are obviously the answer, it comes with a pretty massive problem of dealing with that from a rendering perspective. You cant just wrap an image and have it look normal still.

Couldn't someone just pre-distort the image opposite of the curvature of the screen, the same way it is done for the lenses?

Strange.

How do the samsung tv's work?

Another update, the problem is definitely software. I tried VR player and I manged to get it working with a movie. When zoomed in i was able to push out the borders to the point where they weren't distracting. So i'm assuming the included Tuscany demo has some strange setting for some reason.

The people who've gotten Elite to work have also not said anything about the FOV so yeah, it might really be a software issue.

They were all using DK2's the past few months. Before that, Crystal Cove was used.

On reddit Oculus has said they are working on a software fix for it, though. I just think it's really odd how a dark game like EVE didn't cause the hundreds of people who tried it to comment on the smearing.

In this Road to VR Elite Dangerous video, he touches on the smearing briefly starting at 3:00: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxyfWtFoHkE

From his description of the issue, it sounds as though it should be less of a problem in darker games.

I think optics are the other field where this could potentially be improved, but also comes with headaches.
This is also a (lesser) problem with a flat displays. as you rotate your eyes, the position of our pupils and retina changes.
The only real way to solve this to adapt the distortion shaders with eye-tracking, but there is a solutions to at least make the image look correct for the point you're looking at.

Hmm might be a glitch and yours already shipped. There's a fair few who have received their DK2s and it still says on their order page that its processing.

Mine is stuck on processing too. I'm hoping it shipped already and will be here Monday.

Something similar happened to me with the DK1 as well. Before the website had updated the status unexpectedly there suddenly was a guy outside my door with a package..

Mine is Thursday. :( Chicagoan here and apparently, UPS Ground takes forever. Last location was Ontario, CA.

Thursday here as well. Mississippi.

From the looks of it, I'm not even that impatient anymore. By Thursday a lot of the kinks will have been worked out and there will be more playable builds to try.

Yeah, I'm perfectly OK with getting mine on Thursday--there'll be a lot more content to check out, hopefully less headaches, and I'll have time off work.

All those throwbacks but nobody seems really amaze to try a VR device more avdanced than anything before, and the DK1 made people crazy with less rez, features, slower response..

Is it weird ? Or are just people trying it already used to all that :p

I think pretty much everyone who's gotten their DK2 so far has been following for a long time and either owns or has extensively used DK1. The laymen will absolutely be blown away even more than the DK1. But to those that have used it, DK1 set a standard that pretty much didn't exist before it. DK2 is definitely above that standard, but it's not shocking to the seasoned users. They know pretty much what to expect, it isn't the wonderous mystery that DK1 was for a lot of us. When newbies start getting their DK2s and/or trying them places, they will still rave about it.

Just be prepared to do a little bit of tinkering and try not get bothered if things aren't working perfectly when you first boot a demo up. You want your first VR experience to be this seemless, perfect thing. I know because I've been there. But chances are you're not going to be able to just plug it in and put it on and BAM you're having a perfect VR experience. But once it works, it WORKS.

It's like having sex the first time. It was awesome, but the 2nd and 3rd time was much better. The experience still felt new.

As a shortsighted person (-1.5 on both eyes), should I instantly try the C cups first?

C cups are gone, you only get A and B with the DK2. Also, fwiw RoadtoVR just posted a review and mentioned this:

The device feels slightly more comfortable in place and I found it easier to wear glasses whilst in VR than with the DK1 – although you still need to be careful as you put it on.

This might be a stupid question, but can you technically put screen protectors on the lenses. Like the ones you put on an iPhone. Or will the quality degrade too much?

Just finished reading the review,
it seems honest and thorough. Most of the things discussed have already been mentioned in this thread, though:

Yeah I mean the B cups.

My glasses are big. I don't think that they are gonna fit.
I guess you'll find out soon. I hope they do.

I'm not sure, but that may be tricky if the DK2 also has lens curved on both sides, like the DK1 does.

Well I would only put it on the side that faces the user. I'm afraid of scratching the lenses if I wear my glasses with the first set of lenses.

The thing is, do you know of any convex screen protectors?
-edit-

You do bring up a good point on scratching the lens/glasses, I wonder if someone has or will do some testing on that.

I think the best solution is to wait for the CV, which will undoubtedly have anti-scratch coatings on them. This is a dev kit, one that people will only be using for a short time to be replaced later on by DK3 or CV1, why waste the time and money?

I think you can buy protective lenses for the oculus. They are made of gel of some sort.

Contact lenses. lol sorry.

I'm talking about Oculus's R&D money, not our purchasing money. There's more for Oculus than just Elite.

I don't understand your post then. Surely we can agree that DK1 is inadequate for developers since it lacks positional tracking, not to mention that the resolution is too low for designing legible UIs. Would you have developers hold off on their games until the hardware design is complete? I can't see how DK2 is a bad idea.

Checked my mail for the first time in a couple of days.

You're receiving this email because your Oculus Pre-order is about to ship, and we've charged the remaining balance to the credit card on file.

Cymatic Bruce (God bless him) has already compiled a linked list of everything compatible with DK2 so far:

Thanks for the link!

Having an anti-scratch coating on the lenses does not in any way affect development. You do realize that's what I was referring to, yes? The complaints about the lenses, not the existence of the DK2.

Will I need SDK v0.4 to run the Rift?

If so, how do I get it if i'm not really a developer? I don't feel good about registering at Oculus and faking to be a developer.

lol You need the SDK and the drivers. Every enthusiast faked being a developer and registered a fake project.

It's just a product that you have an idea for. So you can come up with a random title, for a game that you COULD, theoretically, in a few years, start developing. :P If all goes well.

It is kind of odd that you can't add more projects or even really do anything with them..

Also, I'm not sure which of you guys here actually active in the Oculus forums, but there's basically a narrative that most of the Oculus employees are more active on the Oculus subreddit than the official forums. lol

I think this is the main line of thinking most need to come in with. We are getting unprecedented early access for a pretty revolutionary new device. The kinks are being ironed out.

I will say this, the point of all this is to have a seamless experience minus tweaking some settings to cater to each persons taste. I don't want to be talking about issues like this post release.
