Oculus Rift DK2 Thread

GAF, I need your help.

Here is my current rig :
i5 760 OC @ 3.8Ghz
8 Go DDR-3
GTX 660 Ti Power Edition OC (almost same performances as the stock 670).
Etc...

I always thought the Oculus DK 2 looked amazing, but I am having some hestiations. Should I consider upgrading my rig and wait for CV 1 or buy the DK 2... It seems like there are not so many games compatible right now, but experiences like DK 2 and Elite : Dangerous look frankly amazing.

What would you instead of me ? THe point is I don't plan to spend lots and lots of money right now as I might move in another appartment, if it wasn't for that I would buy a new rig and DK 2 immidiately.

Seriously considering getting a G27 this weekend lol. My brothers are visiting soon and I'd love to blow them away with Live For Speed.

The DK2 has only been around for a couple of weeks, and most devs haven't even recieved theirs. The next weeks and months will see a ton of demos and full game support it. I say wait a month or two, and then buy it.

I picked one up a week or two ago and I really like it. It is a fairly good and relatively inexpensive option as there are obviously better setups. It is really nice having the clutch. I've been using it a lot for Euro Truck Simulator 2, Assetto Corsa, and just got the 3 free month trial to iracing which I hope to get going today. (Free trial is here).

I also just picked up a Saitek X52 Pro for Elite Dangerous, Warthunder, and DCS World. It should arrive on Tuesday - the same day as my DK2. I loved Elite Dangerous with the DK1 even though I was playing with a game pad.

Haha nice I think I'll be right behind you on both of those purchases.

A few Unity demos allow you to toggle low-persistence with F1, so that should help you understand what to look for. It should be enabled by default - hitting F1 should make the display quite a bit brighter, as it is no longer switching off the pixels rapidly. When you look around it'll smear like a DK1. Hit F1 again and you should notice a dramatic improvement of clarity in motion. Also hitting space often brings up a menu showing framerate, so you can see if you're locked to 75 (probably v-sync) or unlocked if you're above that. If you're getting 60, which can sometimes happen for me as it reads my monitor's max refresh instead of the Rift's, this can usually be solved by making the Rift the primary display. Unfortunately a lot of Unity demos judder for me even when they are indicating a v-synced 75 fps with low-persistence. However, it's pretty easy to tell the difference between judder and motion smearing. There is barely any motion smearing in low-persistence mode if you can maintain 75fps, aside from the black smear.

Let me try that! I didn't know the F1 trick, BUT i know the space bar trick and i could see many directtorift demo were 75fps and above, while i was having massive motion smearing. I hope my rift is not broken lol.

So i tried, and i actually tink the only demo that runs with low latency is the kokiri one, after i added the -d3d11 line. I could hit F1 there and saw the div. Any other demo and the F1 button doesn't do anything and i have smearing.

Wouldn't those third-person cutaways induce nausea? Otherwise, this looks sweet.
Yeah, but I think the driver's controlling that, it's not something the game just up and does in the middle of a race. No idea why you'd want to do that, though. That's one of the first Rules of Oculus, don't move away from first-person.

What's up with the chromatic aberration?
It's supposed to be there. The lenses are so strong that they introduce chromatic aberration. Inverting the aberration in-game causes the lenses to effectively remove it, resulting in a clean image when viewed from inside the Rift.

If you guys like rollercoasters, Lava Inc. is incredibly smooth in extended mode. Very well optimized, much like Radial-G is. No judder. Perfect head tracking. Also, no messing around with wonky 2D menus. Just boot it up, put on the Rift and you're good to go. Going down a large drop and then jumping over a lava pit is insane. Felt presence the entire time.

So is there ANY okay demos I can run on my laptop? (HD5850 2GB, 16GB ram and i7-740QM)

I can get >100fps on Riftcoaster and LfS, but I'm sure I can't get something like Elite running without buying a new desktop computer, right?

I cant seem to get Live for speed to display correctly on my OR. I know i have to put the OR in extended mode, but do i also need to make the OR display my main display as well?

So without violating the NDA, and speaking in generalities, how's the sense of presence and is there any nausea?

Didn't someone post a Live for Speed video here saying that pCars' implementation wasn't good enough yet and that several testers had asked the developer to make it more like the Live for Speed.. I can't remember which video it was.

I've also heard that Project Cars received an update that was supposed to improve things. Not sure I've heard any impressions since then.

Live for speed on oculus DK2 is surprisingly legit. I'm playing the free version right now and it's good enough for me to only want to play it on oculus. The UI is one of the best on oculus as well.

Man I can't wait for the consumer version Rift.

Doesn't seem like it would be that demanding a game even on dk2 based on the videos I've watched.

What is it about the rift that makes games harder to run when they are played on it? This question isn't necessarily targeted at you. It's just that I've read this many times, people saying games are harder to run on the rift. It's not like the game is being rendered at full resolution twice right? The DK2 is 1080p, but each eye isn't receiving a 1080p rendered image of the game world right?

I believe each eye gets a separate 500p image.

It takes a performance hit because instead of rendering a single 3d image, you're rendering two every frame.

As I understand it you're rendering half the resolution of 1080p twice for each eye to create the total once the stereo image converges. Don't know the exact dimensions of what that is for 1080 though.

Each eye gets 960x1080, so you're rendering pretty much the same overall resolution as normal. However, 2 seperate instances of the camera have to be calculated for each frame, because the difference in them creates the 3D effect between your eyes. Think of it kind of like splitscreen multiplayer. Plus you must have rock solid max framerate, 75Hz for DK2 and probably 90+ for the consumer version.

Some screenshots of my WIP Rift game Volume. I hope to have a short demo out in a week or two. I've built about half of the world / puzzles that I want to include in the demo, and I've got about a sixth of the voice acting done.
Looks interesting. Are you using either Unity or UE4?

Speaking of UE4- it wont display to my dk2 even though it recognizes that its there. Tbh-i havent looked toomuch into the matter but thought id see if anyone else had this issue. And just to clarify, the UE4 editor nor UE4 demos will display to my rift.

Didn't I hear something about games running with like 150% resolution scaling or something?

Cuz I cant understand why VR experiences are so hard to run otherwise.

Yeah, I played the demo for the first time today and it had an amazing interface. I loved how the options menu hovered in front of you while you are sitting in your car and you can lean forward to read everything easier. I was also impressed with the frame rate it ran on my older machine.

The coolest moment I had was when I was racing and I flipped my car over and completely rolled. The depth is insanely cool, I even flinched when an AI car sideswiped me. This definitely showcases the rift as being more than a gimmick.

I want to try Elite Dangerous next, but damn, that price might cause my wife to yell at me. Has any of you bought it and had buyers remorse? All the praise I keep hearing is tempting me to jump in head first.

Out it curiosity what are your specs?

I checked out Brendan Coyle's 4th Floor Studio earlier this evening. One of the cooler, more useful real-world applications of virtual reality is how it impacts architectural visualization. Brendan, for example, takes the dimensions of prospective apartments and models them in 3D to ensure it is a viable space for him and his furniture. He modeled his 4th floor studio apartment using a combination of 3D scanning and hand modeling and made it compatible with the DK2. Without having to leave my house, I was able to better determine that I would feel comfortable living in a place of that size (but only if I am by myself) than I would have just looking at pictures.

I can already envision a fancy real-estate site that offers VR demos of its various listings.

Anyone try warthunder with dk2? The lack of distance clarity on dk1 made it impossible to play. I was hoping dk2 would be better...

Out it curiosity what are your specs?

AMD Athlon II X4 640 3 GHz (doesn't support SSE 4.1, had to emulate it)
8 GB RAM
Win 7 64-bit
AMD R7 260x 2GB

Eventually I want to build a better system, but this one should hold me over until the consumer version releases. So far I haven't encountered anything yet that was way too choppy for my machine to handle, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I can run Elite Dangerous.

Favorites so far have been Quake 2, The Chair, Live for Speed, and probably Elite Dangerous when I cave in and buy it.

Buyer's remorse?? Hail no!! With a HOTAS, its downright amazing. With a HOTAS and a Rift, it's out of this world! Literally!

Get it! :P

I have yet to encounter anyone with a DK2 that regrets spending the $75 on ED.

This is a really cool demo. I love the attention to detail, both in the objects, and the lighting. I felt transported to a different place.
