Oculus Rift DK2 Thread

I played a demo earlier called Ninja Discount Warehouse that was just released yesterday. It was made as part of the Valve VR jam a few months ago by William Manning and Eli Gorman. Using only the Oculus Rift, you jerk your head down to pick up barrels, and then jerk your head either left or right to throw those barrels at incoming ninjas. It's an interesting demo that uses only the motion sensors in the headset itself, though I don't think I would want to play something like that for too long as there is a small gap between my nose and the headset, so whenever I jerk my head quickly the headset will hit my nose and it'll hurt a little. It worked a lot better than I would expect, however. It's more fun when you start picking up as many objects as you can before flinging them all in one, massive push. I recommend checking it out briefly for the novelty of doing these actions with just your head.

Based on my rigs with the specs:
i7 3930k @4.6Ghz
GTX680 @1228/7000
16GB RAM

In traditional 2d mode, to sustain a pretty fluid 60fps vsync'd experience, i had everything on to its max except:

Detailed grass = OFF
AA = DS2X
Vignette = OFF (personal preference rather than performance impact)
Shadows = HIGH
Reflections = HIGH
Motion blur = LOW (personal preference)
Render frames = 1 (lowest input lag for the wheel)

In OR mode, keep in mind i mostly do TT with the occasional quick race, i have lowered a couple things:

AA = OFF
Shadows = OFF (old recommendation from DK1 days, but may not be necessary now?)
Env MAP = HIGH

Also, ive seen the impact of -skipcrowds to improve framerate, which is worth considering for some more fps. However i like seeing the crowd, fills out the stadiums and looks nice.

Got my DK2 today and set it up. I've only tried Tuscany and Elite but it was relatively easy to get both working. Elite is incredible in the Rift. Hands down the best gaming experience I've ever had. My only issue is that I'll get this juddering issue occasionally when I turn my head. Unsure if its a frame rate issue or not.
 
If I am somewhat nearsighted, but dont really need glasses to get along fine in life, will I have trouble seeing things clearing in the Rift? I ask because, while aspects of Elite are really cool, the overall fuzziness and inability to see things far away really hurts the experience. The stars also look like blurring rainbow like things.

I gotta play with this more.
 
Also, I cannot get motion tracking of any kind to work for anything that is not from oculus or Elite. Not having motion tracking hurts the head bad.
 
So what's the latest order dates that have been getting shipped so far?
Wondering if my March 24th order has any chance of being shipped before September.

75$ for an early access game, somebody really needs to twist my arm on this one. Like Ronda Rousey arm lock style.
 
Man, I still get a little motion sick. It takes a while to adjust. Just got done playing the Battle of Endor demo and it was tough going upside down and spinning and such. Had a bit of an issue with Live for Speed too.

I can still play, but any prolonged gaming probably isn't going to happen until my brain adjusts to what it will be seeing.

I might get Elite: Dangerous not even 'for' the DK2, but because the more I watch of videos, the more the game looks really fun.

As someone who tried everything to get used to the dk1 without getting sick, the DK2 is a massive improvement.

It took me about 2 days to stop feeling queasy in it. Stick with it, it gets better.

Yea I haven't been willing to take the plunge at that price yet, either. When I get a gtx880 in the next couple months I might do it. But then I'll feel obligated to buy a flight stick too and I already just spent over $200 on a G27 racing wheel.
 
Mine's out for delivery since 5am. It can arrive any minute now hnggh
I'm so excited. Hopefully I can get it working without too much hassle.
 
Got my DK2 last night and what a nightmare it is to try and run things at 75 fps. I think my system is overheating

Just curious: What is the technical reason behind the dimming of the screen during low persistence mode?

I accidentally turned it off during LFS and it was like taking off a pair of sunglasses (but with blurry motion of course)..
 
Minecrift developer said that he expects to release DK2-compatibility this weekend. Says it will likely be buggy to begin with. Also says that an update to 1.8 Minecraft is unlikely due to all the new code.

The more I read about the Oculus the more I want to get one. Reading peoples experiences with it, it sounds more than awesome. It' s a paradigm shift. But knowing my technical aptitude, I'll wait for the production version. Which will be plug n' play more or less I hope.

Trying to imagine Doom 4/other next-gen shooter experienced through a Rift... Hurry up Palmer Luckey!
 
Does Oculus verify registrations on their site by hand or something? I'm sitting here with the headset, unable to download the SDK.

Edit: Finally figured out I was doing something stupid. Rift is pretty insane. The rollercoaster one is vomit inducing.

Yeah, it has taken a day or two. I've only probably been "in" the Rift for about 2 hours total since receiving it. Had a lot of issues getting things running and such. Now that LFS is going (and the weather isn't making my TV/PC room a sauna) I'll have more time.

Couldn't get the wheel settings down right (ah shit, forgot I could set wheel rotation on the wheel ... ) and the clutch wasn't noticeable. Had to drive in automatic which was really tough for me for some reason, I gauge my speed by the shifter and sounds.

I think my favorite experience so far is Ocean Rift. I don't get nauseous in that and have spent a chunk of that 2-3 hours total in that demo.

Hopefully I adjust, tried the "Law" space one and if that's anything like E:D not sure I'll be able to spend a ton of time in there ... either way I'll be getting E:D and an X52Pro because it will look amazing on my 60" HDTV even if I don't play in the Rift the whole time.

Oh, and for those that haven't tried it, play the Battle for Endor. I had to stay somewhat still with a horizon line but holy shit, flying around IN Star Wars is pretty surreal.
 
Elite is the easiest of all the different games I have tried to setup. I wanna check out other stuff but tracking never seems to work. The whole secondary screen thing is a huge pain in the ass too. Hopefully developers can get their games working in direct mode pretty quickly.
 
So I just had my first hour in the Rift. Tried the following:

Demo Scene:
When I put the Rift on and saw the display I thought something was off.
Is this what everybody was so excited about in all these reaction videos?
A flat screen in front of your face that just moves with your head?
Until I clicked on Start. Suddenly the desk and everything popped up and I was totally blown away, it felt like I was sitting right there, positional tracking is also pretty awesome in this demo!

Tuscany:
Very beautiful. I was really amazed how the perception of size feels in VR.
The house and everything felt a little too large but that's probably up to my IPD settings which I'm fiddling around with currently. 69,5 according to the utility is a quite large it seems.
Anyway, those particles and butterflies! So good! Looking out of the windows and over the balcony was also an awesome feeling.
First time I moved around felt like I was hovering, but it wasn't a bad feeling at all.
I slowly began to ran faster and didn't get motion sick after about 20mins of goofing around in the demo, so I guess this is something?

Sightline The Chair:
It's funny how much better this felt after I put my hands on my legs like the body in the demo.
I got bored out by the consistent looking back and forth pretty quickly but the locations were very well done and when the room got smaller I really started to panic for a bit :D
Getting ported in space was so sick!
I have slight fear of heights and immediately grabbed my chair when there was nothing but my magic virtual chair was there, haha :D Sooo amazing. Can't wait to try more space demos.
What struck me the most was the scene at the skyscraper scaffold, I was like "nope nope nope nope", then the scaffold began to move and finally collapsed... I think my buddy on Skype had a great time listening to me while this happened... xD

Miku Miku Dance Beach thingy:
Not particularly impressed by this one.
Despite having 200fps+ the headtracking was stuttering and moving the view with the mouse/controller was stuttering.
Looking at the characters was a bit uncanny but the most impressive aspect of this one.
I quit only after 5mins tho.

Setup was easy, but I'm still not sure about IPD and everything. Also my lenses are already quite dirty after only 1h of use... I will resist the urge to clean them, doesn't feel good with all the posts about scratched lenses going around :/

E: Another hour in and I guess I'll stop for today. Headache. Still not sure about IPD but I did the measuring multiple times now (one eye closed, both open etc.) and always came up with ~69mm.
 
So, my list of things that you NEED to try if you can:

1) Ocean Rift - still my favorite
2) Battle of Endor - this is definitely a WIP but it's Star Wars!
3) (Tie) Euro Truck 2 - Menus suck, you have to switch back and forth but once it's going, it's pretty awesome
3) (Tie) Live For Speed - easy to get going, was really crazy but I just couldn't get my wheel going
4) Totoro/Spirited Away - must see, I like Spirited Away better but just great depth and presence in both
5) Chilling Space - exactly what it says, just chill ... in space.

Stuff that I own but haven't tried (been too hot here) is

A) World of Diving
B) Vanguard V

Hopefully will update with some more. I've tried a bunch of demos but these are what I'd show people, unless I hate them, then I'll throw them on CyberSpace or Helix.

How do you switch between screens in ETS2? Is there a way I can get the menu to display on my main monitor to set up my company and take jobs, then switch to rift when driving?

Not that I know of. By "switching" I mean completely get the game setup, drive someplace where I can actually kind of 'continue' driving and then save, shut down, set options for the Rift and then go from there hoping it launches correctly!

I have spent hours more time trying to get things work instead of actually playing them. But, it's early development stuff so it's expected ... plus I enjoy it!

Just wish AC would get its act together, I'm losing interest in that game as more racers are becoming Rift supported like LFS and pCARS.

I love AC and I know LFS And AC aren't directly comparable, but it's something when the 3 man team of LFS can put in support of the Rift relatively quickly.

Yeah, I can't fault them .. unless their excuses are bullshit but they are doing a pretty bang-up job so far so I give them the benefit of the doubt.

DK2 is rough around the edges and they have a lot on their plate working up to a retail release but just ignoring or not even retrofitting to correct what they broke with DK1 for those people is kind of annoying.

I love AC but the main reason I bought it was for VR support.

There is absolutely no obligation for any of these devs to support DK1 or DK2. It is in their best interest to support VR when a consumer model launches, and there would be considerable expectation that all cockpit-based sims have a VR mode at that stage. Anything before that should be seen as a bonus. While it would be useful for them to gain feedback and experience on the devkits before that time, you have to accept that they are going to be on different schedules and other things may take priority, and the support may take months to arrive if at all. There is only a very small number of headsets in the wild, and while there is a lot of hype, this is currently a niche of a niche (a non-consumer device on an unfinished sim). It may seem like they are missing a trick by not making it their number 1 priority, but in the grand scheme of things, the speed at which DK2 support arrives is not going to have a significant impact on sales of their software.

(Putting it into perspective like this is my way of dealing with the wait. We can get through this!)
