Because it is not practical until you get extremely wide FOV bordering on the limits of eye rotation. Stereo rendering is costly at any resolution, adding an additional two camera views on top would destroy performance even at very low fidelity. It is less costly to do two full-detail renders than four renders of varying quality.
This is especially true within the limits of current HMD hardware - the high quality area would need to fill most of the FOV to avoid being able to look directly at low quality areas. It would make sense if the total FOV was over 180 degrees, but that is a long way off.
We did not reduce FOV for performance reasons. It is a side effect, not a cause.
The FOV of the RiftUP mod is much lower than DK2.
You are right that the space at the top and bottom was not used, but it did completely fill the lenses vertically, even with a theoretical eye relief of zero. The same was not the case horizontally - the black center divider is easy to see in DK1, DK2 has greater stereo overlap and nearly equal HFOV/VFOV.
Got mine, yay!
So there's a bunch of tech demos, but are there any full length game experiences that the DK2 works with? Does it work with the games that DK1 worked with like Half-life 2?
Nope, not yet. Everything has to be recompiled for the new SDK to work with DK2. Eliteangerous is probably the most fully fleshed out experience you can currently get.
Has anyone tried watching a movie/video in the Theater? If the videos look great on this than this will be my killer app. It got by far the most ooh's and ahh's on my DK1 when demoing.
There's one other game.![]()
Reposting for new page.
More responses from Palmer lol.
Nice to see the founder responding.
Crazy, as I finally got the old DK2 version working today (0.4 compiled version never launched) along with a bunch of other 0.3 sdk demos.
So why cant you render at normal resolution and FOV then render again at the higher FOV at say something like 800x480, Upscale that and blur it and use the lower res FOV for the edges of the screen then the high res for the center where your eyes look 99.9% of the time? Would that work if there is enough time to render a wide FOV at a lower resolution? We dont need 4k resolution for most of our FOV anyway.

How was the demo on the DK2?
The camera sensor and dk2 really hates win 8.1, the DK2 only works now and the for the sdk demo and the positional tracker camera works never, I can't even get the blue light on.

Does your tracking page show a scheduled delivery date yet? Mine says August 8, so I don't think it will arrive before the weekend.I suppose so
My friend in Basel got his shipping confirmation too. My problem is that I work on Thursday. They will probably leave me a note and I will tell them to deliver on Monday :/
I would love to play the whole Friday with it...
Just got my headset a little earlier. I put it up on ebay due to the fact they seem to go for so much. I have it set at a high price because I do want to play it but if someone wants to pay a ridiculous amount then let them. I doubt I will sell it but I know I will kick myself if I don't at least try. SO if it doesn't sell by the end of the day then I'll happily take down the auction and play it tomorrow without a guilty conscience.
Does anyone here have a DK2 who got extremely sick in the DK1?
Any comments on the nausea going away?
I could only use my DK1 for about 10 minutes before I just couldn't take it any more, and would feel sick for about one to two hours afterwords.

Man, this is disappointing. I ordered at 5 pm on the 19th because I was at work, and it's still pending. I figured they would have at least processed all of the first day orders by now.
Feel like I'm having a ton of trouble hitting 75fps in direct mode, or at least there seems to be a lot of judder...
Could be a vsync issue as well? I have a (now-measly) GTX 580 and it can't hit 75fps on the Digital Rain demo...
My UPS tracker just updated, should be here tomorrow![]()

Where you from?
Scotland, ordered at 12:39 PM PDT.
has asseto corsa been updated for DK2?
Response to that FOV image from Reddit:
"This is quite damning evidence! Or at least it would be if that was the DK1 in the comparison there. It's not. It's what you get with no HMD.
I reconnected my DK1 and got some pictures using the same configuration as my DK2. The exact figures will vary from person to person, so if your field of view doesn't exactly match mine it's because you're a mutant."
This shows a much better comparison
http://www.theriftarcade.com/dk2/Ok. What's the easiest way to see what games have been update for DK2 at any given time?
I wonder if the the vertical fov was reduced in lieu of the horizontal resolution would it be as noticeable? We're so used to widescreens at this point that maybe viewing a narrow image increases the sense of claustrophobia or of using goggles.
That's a possibility. My only experience with the DK1 is at tradeshows, so I'm sure the DK2 will not disappoint. As you said before, it does change based on application so maybe it's somewhat solvable at a software level.
Did you say your DK1 was modded slightly to get closer to the screen? Having the DK2, do you think it could be modded in the same way?
There is a little VR Drive-In Theater demo thing that has been updated for DK2. Only costs $1.50 so I said what the hell why not? Watching videos is definitely clearer, but still, you're losing quite a bit of resolution and looking through a bit of a screen door. It's one step closer, though. With the DK1 I was never able to just sit through an entire movie that way, but with this I at least am considering it lol.
I never owned the DK1, I tried it a few times when it first launch. Maybe you mean someone else?
When I get home I'll try the Titan of space demo again. Can't wait for it to be updated to dk2, my favorite of all the demos I've tried.
