Oculus Rift DK2 Thread

I never thought VR would actually make me shit a brick.. until I tried Cyberspace ride.

http://youtu.be/gXPYIr-6Mb4

holy shit.. the part after 1:20 where you nose dive to the floor had my heart rate up to about 180bpm.

Amazing

Oh wow, this is the first thing that really impressed me. I couldn't believe I felt motion without the seat moving. Was really awesome.

Now can't wait for a rollercoaster simulator for DK2.

Just watching the video made me quesy,I can't imagine what it will be like in the rift.

Quit out of that about 3 seconds after starting the ride on the DK2.

-------

So, I just got done playing Elite Dangerous for about 2-3 hours straight. I have to say, the DK2 is a great improvement. I feel it's at a point where you really could play games with it for lengthy periods of time without nausea. I do have a DK1 so maybe I've just built up my VR legs enough, but there were few times I got nauseous tonight.

It seems Elite has some sort of issue with their time warping implementation or something because I get noticeable judder when my fps falls below 75fps. I'm hoping there are more optimizations to come in Elite. It runs really quite well right now, but it seems my machine wasn't able to keep 75fps+ at 1080p in many areas (asteroid belts and stations).

My specs are:
i7- 4770k @ 4.2 GHz
Nvidia 780 Ti OC'ed
16 GB RAM

I think I may upgrade my GPU at the same time I get the consumer version, especially since Star Citizen is on the horizon. :)

Other things to note:
- Be prepared for a lot of fiddling to try to get things right as everyone transitions to 0.4 and Oculus fixes things in their service. In general, if you're having issues kill the OVRservice and config utility. They cause a lot of issues right now that I'm sure everyone's read about.

- In terms of comfort it feels overall improved from DK1, though I know it is slightly heavier. After an extended session I did have pressure on my nose, but it wasn't nearly as bad as DK1. As I said, I played for about 2-3 hours straight, so I don't think it's terrible.

- Text is way more readable now. It's not perfect, however what's great in E:D at least is that you just have to lean in closer to read the smaller text. It's pretty cool to do, but of course I'm excited to hear about what the res of CV1 will be as well.

- Position tracking simply rocks. Everything is more natural. I do wish they had a way to better extrapolate position when you go off camera because it's really jarring when you snap back into place when the camera sees you again. On that note, the way the Oculus demo's handle losing you in the camera is just annoying. It's fairly large yellow text in the center of the screens that says "Lost Camera View" or something like that. Elite handles this way more gracefully where everything greys out and then color comes back in when tracking picks up again.

- This thing is super, duper smooth in updating the screen now. Get those framerates up people and you'll be having a great time!

- Hardware is very high quality all around. I was happily surprised at the camera having mounting options. It is now clipped to the top of my monitor. :)

- Black smearing wasn't really noticeable in E:D (or at least I just learned to ignore it?). However, it's very noticeable in the Totoro demo and Technolost (which looks so great!)

- I swear the lenses reflect some of what's being displayed on screen but upside down and flipped. Don't know how that's happening, but it was extremely noticeable in the E:D loading screen when loading into MP. In that, it's mostly black but a yellow blueprint of a ship rotating, and if you move your head around, you can see the same ship moving around the lens.

- Don't forget to update the firmware on your Rift's! Mine came with v2.10. The version that comes bundled with the Rift Config Utility is v2.11. There's a firmware folder within the rift config folder that contains the new firmware. No idea what it changes (anyone know?) but I didn't notice anything before/after updating.

Good impressions.

So the million dollar question is; Would you go back to monitor play with Elite Dangerous?

All these negative reviews make me wanna sell my DK2 before I try it out :/
I haven't seen a single negative review.

I have seen people(mainly with experience with DK1) being constructively critical of certain elements, though. Naming a couple things that still aren't perfect doesn't mean its a 'negative review'. Pretty much everybody is saying its still a big step up.

If you were expecting a polished, consumer-ready product though, then yea, sell and wait for CV1.

Question regarding DK2 FOV: How many of you guys use glasses with DK1 - how does that compare to using glasses with DK2 (i.e. maximum eye relief).

That chart posted a couple pages back seem to indicate that FOV is actually better for this type of usage - but I haven't actually seen impressions to indicate as much.

Actually yes, some people claim the immersion was better with the DK1..
Anyway my DK2 is in my town now, i can feel it coming my way. But with my HD6670 i'm not going to have fun right now i guess lol.

Not sure if anyone's interested in the impressions (DK1) of a newcomer, but I was fortunate enough to buy another GAFfer's DK1 Rift (since he was upgrading to a DK2 like most of you) which means that I finally got to experience this shit for myself and man... it is the real deal!

Sure, it has a couple of shortcomings, but other than that, walking around in City 17 last night, like, pretty literally walking around in City 17, was one of the most amazing experiences I've had with videogames in a long time.

In fact, I think in terms of impact, there are three key moments during the 25 years I've spent with this hobby.

1. First time seeing Doom running on a buddy's 386 in '93
2. Getting a 3DFX card in '98 (and using it to play Unreal and Half-Life)
3. Using an Oculus Rift in '14 (playing a game that is already 10 years old mind you!)

Pretty big gap between those last two. So yeah, you could say I've been waiting for this to happen for quite a while now and I was always convinced this had to be that next step. Apologies, it's difficult to express this without hyperbole. But I really think it's that amazing. Thank you Lucky, thank you Carmack.

Where are these comments?

I see people being disappointed with the FoV but generally still thinking its a step forward in other respects. It sounds like some of you are focusing a bit too much on any negatives.

Itching to get home and play around with the oculus. Does anyone know of a list of games supported for the dk2? Ive been using the one on reddit so far, but ive worked through most of them (the ones that I could get to work, anyway).

I can tell you this thread has been pretty negative :p
I can't even remember a post of someone saying something like "oh my, trying the demos i already knew with the DK2 changed a lot with the better latency, rez and tracking!"

My Rift is out for delivery. Hopefully I have a decent chunk of time to try it out tonight between packing for vacation and cleaning and everything. We leave at 3:30 AM tomorrow.

My god that CyberSpace thing is nuts. The most extreme falling sensation I've experienced so far (this my first 'coaster' on DK2) - my ears feel funny!

I'm jealous of you guys. I'm waiting till consumer version comes out myself as my current hardware just won't cut it. I want a full mind blow when I throw this thing on for the first time.

I imagine you can turn off AA and reduce shadows and whatnot to get better framerate in Elite, right? I'm assuming given the lower resolution of the display, reducing textures and shadows will not be as big of a deal?

Like I said - you're focusing specifically on the negatives. That's why you cant remember somebody saying something positive.

Many of the people here have experience with the DK1 and are past the 'holy bejesus' stage of trying good VR for the first time and are now into the particulars of the experience, which involves being critical of things.

Well, let me try that with a fresh eye, as i just received it :p

Thanks for the impressions, do the lenses have any kind of Anti Reflective coating on them?

I have some observations about the fit of both the DK1 and DK2. The 'ski goggles' part of the design appears to be very similar if not identical, down to the tension of the straps, and the smell of the foam - more on that later.

As they are so similar, I am having equal trouble getting comfortable with the DK2 as I was with the DK1. The headset is front-heavy - the DK2 even more so - the weight is pulling down, but the strap holds it back, meaning it wants to rotate, with more pressure on the lower part of the foam than the top:

dk2auujv.jpg

This means I find it quite uncomfortable on my cheeks, but more importantly, the pivot point causes the weight to pull the top of lenses away from my face, and the bottom of the lenses towards it, meaning I am not viewing the image exactly the straight-on, as the unit starts to droop. This seems to cause blurriness, particularly in the lower half of the image.

The top strap is supposed to counter this, but it's not effective. One solution is to have the straps extra tight, but that is even more uncomfortable and has its own problems. What I find myself doing instead is squinting a lot, not with my eyes but with my face, essentially doing a massive grin. This causes my cheek muscles to push the lower part of the foam away, straightening the device. If I hold the device in both hands and pull it away from my cheeks to same degree, it has the same effect.

As it stands, a massive grin is basically what I'm doing most the time in VR anyway, so this is quite an effective solution, but it's not ideal!

I have tried moving the eye relief dials as far away as possible, but this is not the same - it isn't the distance of the lens that is the problem, it's the fact the whole thing droops, and therefore the lenses are always at a bit of an angle, whether they are close or far away.

Does anyone else get this? I have a feeling it could just be my face being not ideal for the shape of the enclosure - if the top of my cheeks were bigger, it would probably sit at a better angle all the time.

Hrm. You could try adding some foam to the bottom part of it -- you can find some at Walmart, and use some glue to put it on. That might help.

Mine arrived today, but I'm feeling totally out of my element. Can't get a video signal. Light remains orange, no clue how to fix it. GPU's an AMD 7970 if that helps.

Quick first feeling, just with the config demo thing.

_About the fov, i can notice the side borders, but as i didn't see the Dk1, it's not shocking.
_Screen Door, it's visible, but yeah, i knew about it, and it's not really immersion killing to me. It's like if you had a filter in front of your eyes.. Doesn't mean what you see behind it is not real..

_It's more heavy than what i would have thought, but i'll try to adjust it. It's not the HMZ at least but still..

_Didn't they brag about the Dk2 having a great latency ? Cause when i move my head pixels turn blurry.. I thought this was a Dk1 problem..

_It's real hot in paris and after 2 minutes, the lenses are all sweaty lol..

But the "presence" is here anyway. I mean i wanted to touch those plants.. Also i hit my head in the (real) desk wanting to see the fake one closer lol. Their desk is too low :p

Did you download SDK 0.4.0, install the Oculus service/driver stuff, run the config utility, use the advanced menu to upgrade the firmware, and try running the IPD measurement from there?

Hmmm I followed the instructions from the guide but am encountering some problems.

I installed the runtime first and rebooted directly afterwards..

Plugged in Rift in USB + HDMI
Plugged in Sync cable into mini box
Plugged in Camera in USB
Plugged in power to mini box

But it goes from (waiting for camera) to (not connected to service)

When I disconnect the Camera USB I am able to run the SDK demo....

Any ideas?

Yes, maybe (not if it's separate from step one, yes, yes, tried (but I have no video when doing this).

Anyone know if any Canadians have got their DK2s yet?

Wondering this myself, especially for western Canada. I was in the first batch but my tracking info hasn't updated for like half a week now. For all I know my DK2 has just been sitting in L.A.

Yeah, brought the HMD to 2.11.

The stupid thing is the camera is properly recognized by Windows 8. If I look at devices and printers there is a 'Camera DK2'.

The DK2 camera is known to conflict with some other USB devices, such as Logitech keyboards and who knows what else. If you have any other devices hooked up to your PC via USB, you might wanna try unplugging those and seeing if anything changes.

I heard there could be interference with webcams.

Maybe try unplugging any webcam you have?

Don't have any webcams.

Unplugged everything, even my mouse keyboard combo (MS Wireless 1000 combo or something like that), and it didn't take. (So nothing was connected but the DK2 and the Camera...)

Didn't help :(

God damnit. I got the DK2 but it's not working. Device Manager doesn't recognize either Rift or the Camera, Oculus Configuration Tool recognizes Rift but not the Camera and the Configuration Tool's demo doesn't work.

I suggest a full shutdown - Win8 restarts are sometimes a bit weird.

Mine arrived here in Japan today.

Got the shipping email yesterday even though it had actually shipped from Hong Kong last Friday.

Unlike DK1 I didn't have to pay any extra taxes/fines which was nice.

Won't get a chance to play with it till Saturday if I'm not too tired.

Tried the Kokiri demo.

I still have no way to see what's the fresh rate. But i'm using a HD 6670 so maybe it's a problem.

Anyway it felt goood, nice. Honestly, i forget completly about the fov. I'm not seeing the black bars on the side if i'm not thinking about them.

Now, wow the screen door is pretty obvious and the iq horrible. Red borders everywhere cause of the oled i guess.

It's weird cause it works and feels real and yet i'm totalyl not impressed. I'm like "yeah that's kokiri forest yeah i'm walking into it". I'm not sure if it's that the original level design in the game doesn't really feel natural (i mean the way the town is done, the forest around it.. it doesn't really feel super real in term of scale), or the screen door or the fps maybe (but it felt smooth).

Now, the big tree. Oh my, that was a fucking huge tree. I was walking under its nose and looking above and it felt like this thing was huuuuuge. Pretty cool.

Something else that is cool. I heard a lot about the weirdness of moving with a controller back in the time, when people tried the first dk. It's insane how much it is totally natural to move, even orientate the head with the second screen and look everywhere with the rift. It's just like it was always like that, you don't even think about it.
