Oculus Rift DK2 Thread

I've been wondering about this, but literally nothing runs in Direct to Rift mode for my DK2. Not even the demo scene that you click on in the Oculus Config Utility. It just shows up in my main monitor.

Everything I've been running have been in extended. You guys know why the direct mode doesn't work?

It's broken. We have to wait.

I hate the extended mode! I want ALL games to be playable in direct mode :(

That's what's odd though. A few pages back Durante stated that Suwapyon works perfect in direct mode.
Getting direct mode to work was extremely difficult for me.

Here's the only maneuver (that's really the only way to call it) that works reliably to enable direct mode on my home PC:
  1. Set extended mode in the utils
  2. Completely kill the service and the utils program
  3. Disable the Rift screen in the nvidia control panel
  4. Restart the service and the utils tool
  5. Switch to Direct mode in the tool
  6. Turn the DK2 on and off with its power button

From that point, direct mode will work in everything that supports it (the built-in demo and about 8 or so more demos/games. Yes, I know it looks like voodoo, but that is reproducible for me.

(On the other hand, on my work PC it simply worked out of the box after a restart)

Just got my DK2 today!

Quick question: when I try the demo room the orientation tracking works but the depth is inverted. When I move inwards the camera moves back instead. Has anyone else had this problem?

I think that's what you get if your camera isn't working at all and it's relying on motion sensors. Is it picking up lateral movements?

I played Suwapyon after a clean reboot with the Rift in Direct mode.

It's the only demo/game out of about 15 I have tried that actually supports direct mode. Everything else (other than the test room in the Oculus config tool) required Extended.

Not working at all. I will keep using the extended mode.

WTF? I keep hearing this, but 95% of my demos have worked in Direct Mode from Day 1. Am I an anomaly or something? Don't remember doing anything special during setup.

Thanks! I realized I didn't have a cable plugged in which was causing issues with the camera. Works now.

WTF indeed. What demos and games have you played that worked in Direct Mode?

As per my post above, it seems to be highly setup dependent currently. I needed to really go out of my way to make it work on my PC at home, but on my work PC it was almost plug and play.

Here's a list of stuff I've run in "Direct HMD access" mode:
- BLASTBUSTER
- MESS
- Proton Pulse
- Skyroads VR (I wanted to make that dammit! ;))
- Suwapyon

Are you talking about demos with 'directtorift' EXEs? Because those usually work for me, but I'm in 'Extend Desktop' mode. I believe people are talking about the 'Direct HMD access' mode.

No, I've actually been using Direct HMD mode for almost everything.

I have 39 VR demos/applications, and 36 of them work perfectly. The only ones that require me to use Extended Mode are Elite Dangerous beta, Couch Knights, and Caffeine.

Same for me, if there is a directtorift executable, it works.

And you have set the Rift display mode from Extended to Direct mode?

All the "directtorift" executables I've come across do not work when the Rift is set to Direct mode. I need to set it to Extended for them to run properly.

EDIT: Interesting. What are your specs?

July 27? If I order today whats the waiting period?

I think he meant March. Their site says new orders expect to start shipping in September. People have been skeptical of this but it looks like they're processing a boatload of orders internationally now and are into the 22nd, and most of the orders are from the first two days so who knows that estimate may actually be accurate.

It's weird it should be the contrary. The direct HMD acess is the one you need to run directtorift launchers. It works everytime for me. I use the other one when there are no such things and i have to put the desktop in extended to, and put the app window on the secondary screen manually.

I'm generally curious about how Direct to HMD mode works.

How often are display devices not treated as traditional monitors in Windows? How does Aero/Desktop Composition come into play? Are there notable differences between Windows 7 and Windows 8 due to software being allowed to disable composition on Windows 7 and not 8? Or is that not really a factor?

And is some software-level vsync generally in use when you do Direct to HMD? If so, why don't more PC games take that approach even when played traditionally? I suspect UE games do, but I don't know of many others.

Yeah, same here, as in Direct Mode works most of the time for me.

Hopefully a lot of this will be sorted in the next SDK update.

Also, has anyone used Virtual Desktop? Everytime i try to use it, nothing comes up.

What OS do you use?

As desktop replication will only work on Windows 8. You can still use Virtual Desktop on Windows 7 and launch 0.4 SDK enabled demos from the launcher, but that's it.

Alright yeah so the cool thing is, the reason some people are stereo blind is essentially because their brain doesn't "get it". I actually had a pretty similar experience myself with the 3DS -- the 3DS looked SO AMAZING, and I wasn't even entirely sure why. Even being stereoblind you still get some depth cues, but everything on the 3DS just looked so... round. Well, lo and behold, some time after that, at a Walmart, I'm just looking at this balloon and it's like my brain flipped a switch -- suddenly that balloon was just... there, floating in the air and I could actually tell exactly where it was at!

So, I'm not sure if it's because of there being visible pixels (The low fidelity forcing the brain to compare the two images perhaps?), or what, but it does seem that these sorts of 3D screens can actually help our brain figure this shit out.

It's pretty crazy, I always thought (well I never really thought about it) that I was seeing everything in 3D, so when I found out I wasn't, I was pretty amazed. Dominance in my eyes seems to switch a bit but I think I am more left dominant than right, either way, although I can see perfectly fine out of both eyes my brain is just not processing them both at the same time. I am now hopeful I can potentially correct (at least somewhat) and I look forward to the "switch" happening one day, thanks for your experience it gives me confidence :)

That is pretty amazing. The first time you've ever experienced actual stereo was using the Rift? Wow.

Also, World of Diving supports DK2? Holy crap, going to buy it right now.

I can only say yes, but remember this is an uneducated yes. I have tried asking someone who's stereopsis is fine what they see, and they find it really hard to explain. What I do know, is I feel things at times with the OR that feels realer than real life, in that things in front of me (albeit sometimes) take on a whole new level of presence. For example the plant in the demo room, I see it as a whole object with different depth cues over the leaves, as I said it's really hard to explain. When I bring up the wireframe thing in the demo room, at times looking at the red line in the centre I see two of them (again at times) where as when trying the Brock String I have only been able to see one (depending on which eye is dominating).

And yes World of Diving supports DK2 (such a tranquil expereience), although you have to close the OVR service and run the OR in extended mode (just like Elite).

This should be of interest to you. I believe it is scheduled to release late 2014 / early 2015:

Diplopia - A VR Game to Help Strabismus and Amblyopia

Thanks, I have donated to this and am currently talking with the creator to get access to the alpha DK2 version soon.

Glad to hear world of diving is good to go with dk2, I backed awhile ago and haven't used it since the ship wreck level was released. The feeling of lowering down into the deep ocean is kinda creepy, especially as the light dims around you :o

Tried that Quake 2 DK2 version, pretty cool with tons of options, but the judder is horrible for me, and no directtorift mode.

Did you plug in the sync cable? I had the same issue, was because I forgot to plug it in.

Quake 2 is smooth as butter for me. No discomfort, either, and while I'm not quite as good as I am with traditional controls (feel like I can't aim a cursor around a screen as fast as I can a screen around a cursor), the game is overall extremely playable. Awesome.

Some people have found success in eliminating judder by setting the rift to primary display.. Have yet to try myself.

I'm hanging for the judder fix they said they sorted out in the latest (to be released) SDK

Ran super smooth here, but I actually got motion sickness halfway through the second stage. The way aiming is implemented with the second stick is smart, but whenever you pan too far and it moves the camera my brain starts to lose it.

Edit: All I did was set Rift as the primary display and I ran the included exe with no issues. Popped right up in full screen on the Rift, which I was grateful for as it is a pain to get windowed apps displaying on the Rift in extended mode sometimes.

Im using Win 7 64bit.

Ill keep messing with it and see what happens.

Quake 2 is working now? Hmmmm....

I've been getting an issue where most of the demos I've tried running are opening in a 1920 x 1080 window instead of fullscreen. Has anyone else dealt with this? The only demo I've been able to get working perfectly is the demo scene in the configuration.

Have you set the rift to extended mode? Most everything requires that.. Sometimes I get the issue you're describing and the only thing thats fixed it for me has been a system reboot. Then they work fine.

Yeah I've been using extended mode. Some stuff works but a lot doesn't. For example right now I'm trying to run the Tuscany demo and I can only get it to open in a window instead of fullscreen which makes it kind of unusable.

Quake 2 is giving me some judder too know matter what settings I tweak. It's definitely running at 75Hz low persistence. Tried both Rift and monitor as primaries, Forced vsync and no vsync, forcing d3d11 and d3d9, and all combinations of the above, but no matter what I still get judder. It seems less severe when I uncap my framerate where it runs at ~150fps vs 75. Will just wait for an updated version before I put in a long session. Was still pretty cool, the little bit I played. I really like how there is straight up menu options for toggling and fps counter, low persistence, timewarp, and all that stuff. Wish all Rift software had these robust options.

Does ALT+ENTER force it fullscreen for you?

I feel ya, getting that on my end too.. I dont spend too much time troubleshooting atm as I figure the SDK will be fixed soon enough. I'm just sticking to Elite at the moment and what demos I can get to run. Looking forward to Live for Speed tonight!

I've preordered and tried World of Diving yesterday. Second best experience so far after Elite, though I got motion sick after about 30minutes...

I've been fortunate with Quake 2. I got like 15 seconds of tearing throughout a long session.

It's blowing my mind, too. I'm amazed my body is okay with a game this fast, lol. The only things that get me are some jumps. I'm really adjusting to the deadzone aim, it's plenty fast enough for Quake 2's campaign. I want to play every FPS like this good god.

I logged into MyUPS and noticed that a UPS label had been created and that delivery was scheduled for Tuesday. I guess that means they're planning on shipping the next US batch out today or tomorrow?

It's going to be a long weekend and a longer Monday/Tuesday.

Edit: Just got updated to origin scanned with a Tuesday delivery. It's happening.

This is so confusing to me because the only things that run for me are in Direct to Rift mode. If it's not Direct to Rift, it doesn't work on mine.

I wonder if it has to do with videocards.

Or operating systems. I'm using it on Win 7 64-bit.

I think direct to HMD involves a custom display driver. As such, I don't see how normal PC games could use anything like it.

I got an email from Oculus VR saying my order was shipped. UPS says it's been scanned and waiting to be shipped, with a delivery date of Monday. Awesome that it's so soon, but it's a shame that I'll be busy attending Monday Night RAW live in Portland. I don't even know if I'll be able to mess with it until the following Monday, since I'm either working or spending (non-video game) time with my girlfriend for the rest of the week. Urrrgggghh!
