Oculus Rift DK2 Thread

Really? I only tried the VR once, but I thought some people felt sick because of having to move around while looking, and the movement not feeling as natural? I'm mostly talking about FPS games, rather than things like racers or (the one I'm looking forward the most because I love the game itself) Elite Dangerous, where you are in control, but still stay on your seat.
Basically rides would let you look around without having to worry about the movement.
Maybe there are different sorts of motion sickness. I played Team Fortress 2 even with the DK1 (though as pointed out mouse may be better than controller) and it didn't bother me much, yet the sort of amusement park rides that have a big 3D screen and just tilt your seat around a bunch are HORRIBLE. I went on the Despicable Me "ride" at Universal and I think it took me an hour or two to stop feeling like crap afterwards.

What kind of DRM is "mongo"? Never heard of it.

It's the best kind of security

I am quite concerned with how many people are talking about judder, I should
Have my rift in October and will be running it on a 780ti.

I notice it seems to be the head tracking that's causing the judder as people have mentioned no judder when using the mouse, do you feel software should be able to fix this or is it a hardware problem?

I haven't experienced any judder, outside of ordinary performance issues with a few demos (and Elite Dangerous). And I'm on a 680. I think judder is tied to certain hardware that doesn't want to cooperate, or individual computer settings. Nothing that can't be addressed in a future SDK.

SDK 0.4.2 is out, with some neat fixes and features (Chromatic Aberration, Riftsaver mode, fixed CPU usage of the config util, apparently some stutter fix for unity): https://developer.oculusvr.com/?action=hist&ver=21

Code:
Version 0.4.2 Beta9/4/2014
New Features
[B]Added OVRServiceLauncher Windows service, resolving the issue with the service not launching automatically on some systems.[/B]
Added a new chroma setting for minimum eye relief, improving chromatic aberration correction when configured through the Oculus Configuration Utility.
Added “Riftsaver” mode, which turns off Rift display in direct mode if the headset is not in use.

Bug Fixes
Oculus SDK
Fixed an issue where the built-in latency tester would randomly stop working and the DK2 would have to be reset. This fix requires an update to the provided 2.12 firmware in the latest runtime installer.
Removed ATL references from the LibOVR Win32 Display code.
Fixed full core utilization of Oculus Configuration Utility when in Desktop mode.
Fixed the lag in Oculus Configuration Utility when the service is stopped.
Miscellaneous improvements to the Oculus Runtime Service (now called OVRServer).

Unity
Fixed crashes and corruption when using 64-bit client with 32-bit service.
Fixed NullReferenceExceptions due to script initialization order.
Fixed race conditions in TimeWarp responsible for camera stutter.

Highlighted my favourite change.

Did you flash the new firmware? If so try rebooting like 2-3 more times. If that doesn't work replug hdmi and usb.

couldnt install the new firmware because the rift was not recognized.
restarting didnt help.

shut the computer off for 30 seconds and after that it worked again. just installed the new firmware.

Updated to the new runtime and I still get an Oculus Configuration Utility crash every time I reboot my computer. It's not a huge deal since it works after a manually restarting the service and utility but the patch notes had me hoping they corrected the issue.

This is soooo good! The chromatic aberations were killing me and now it looks much better. In the chair demo it is almost impossible to see any even when looking very far left and right.

Am I blind or why am I not seeing any chromatic aberrations? Not even in Elite Dangerous with no correction.

Only certain software made it real apparent. Elite never did for me but the first version of HL2 that supported DK2 was really bad in dark sections.

I see. I wasn't thinking of some fast ride with loops and shit, but more of a ride like the Back to the Future or what I assume the Despicable Me ride is. Maybe because in your case the seat moves but not the screen, that was the part that made you sick? If the "screen" moves with you in 3D, wouldn't it be better? Something ala SpiderMan perhaps, where you are on a ride moving around and everything is happening in different spots and you have to move your head around a bit?

Anyway, I haven't tried anything other than the Unreal Engine roller coaster and that was on the DK1. Can't wait for the DK2 to arrive so I can try more things!

I really hope the consumer version costs $200. I wouldn't mind paying $400 if it came with other goodies though.

I'd love $200 but it sounds a bit too low to me, especially if they integrate more hardware like a camera, eye tracking, input device/controller, etc. I'd rather they do the hardware right and sell it at a bit more of a premium than go for the low end. Who knows though.

What's the current shipping lead time for orders in the USA?

"New orders are expected to begin shipping in October 2014."

I tried the Urban Coaster demo, which is a roller-coaster that flies you around a city with tall skyscrapers. It's mostly up in the air, and even goes through some buildings. While it didn't strike me as a very good roller-coaster specifically, it was a passable Spider-Man web-swinging simulator. Every turn felt like the perfect time to throw my hand out like I was swinging around. I felt ridiculous, but even more awesome when I made my movements line up with where I was flying. Playing pretend has never been so fun.

Seriously, somebody needs to make a physics-based web-swinging simulator that uses the STEM. Just swinging through the city, aiming and shooting your own webs. I need it!

Interesting. I wonder if there were updates. I don't think Tuscany (download, not SDK version) and Ocean Rift were compatible with DirectToRift when I received my DK2, had to -force-d3d11 and -adapter N for both.

Either way, you are literally the only person I know that has had a flawless experience and I would be happy as shit to have that under my belt.

I have a similar system but with a lot of the more popular apps (World of Diving, Live For Speed, Half Life 2, Senzo Peso (sp?), Vanguard V, Totoro, Spirited Away, and some others) I have to do some tweaking and there is still some judder.

Maybe it's the AMD card, who knows?

How's World of Diving? I've been on the fence about it. I really don't like the idea that I can't even demo it without paying.

SDK is just for developers, right? If you're using the DK2 to play other people's demos and stuff the only thing that matters is the firmware and there haven't been any new firmware since launch, correct?

You still need the new runtime and new firmware (2.12, was 2.11 after launch).

Just download the updated runtime from oculusvr and update firmware from within the app.

I'm playing Metroid Prime on the dolphin VR emulator.

I tried that the other day. Tilting my head up to have the rain in Tallon fall onto my visor, that was a moment 12 years in the making. Too bad that area runs like shit... but then again I didn't tweak any settings. Which is kind of amazing in itself... a 12 year old console game in an emulator has been adapted for perfect VR gameplay, with headtracking and everything, and it's basically plug and play. Salivating at the prospect of more games getting this treatment.

On another note, some demos are launching as windows, they kind of spill over onto my monitor and I have to ALT+enter to get them on my Rift... what am I doing wrong?

Can you explain all the steps you've taken to get it to run? My image is upside down, only has black and white colors and zoomed in.

Didn't have to change much at all. Just followed the few steps in the Dolphin VR readme file. Pasted below:

Oculus Rift DK1 to DK2 are supported. You need the Oculus 0.4.1 or 0.4.0 runtime installed.
Set the Rift Display Mode to "Extend Desktop to the HMD", or it won't work!
Plug the Rift in, and make sure the service is running, before launching Dolphin.

Only the OpenGL renderer will work. In Graphics, turn off Render To Main Window.
In the Graphics options Enhancements tab set the internal resolution to a multiple
of the native. 1x Native is much too blurry, I use 2.5x Native for my DK1.
Lower resoultions are faster but blurrier.
I haven't tested Anti-Aliasing or Anisotropic filtering, so use at own risk!
Post-Processing has no effect and is not implemented.
eXternal Frame Buffer is always disabled regardless of what you choose.
Turning Free-Look on in the Advanced tab allows you to walk around with Shift+WASD.
The OnScreen Display or debug information doesn't work in VR mode, so don't bother.

Choose a game and click the Play button to start. Acknowledge the warning, then put
on the Rift. Keep the mouse over the Rift's window, and click to focus input.
Shift+R recenters the view.

had a little get-together at my place last night for some friends to try the Oculus out. if anything is wondering what works best for that scenario, the top 4 demos (in terms of people's reactions and play time) seemed to be:

1. Dreadhalls
2. Radial-G
3. Landscape Mountains (which is kind of a misnomer, it's a hang gliding simulator, almost everyone kind of got lost in this demo and played for a long time)
4. Vanguard V

Mmm, yeah, that is a worthwhile experience. It was really impressive seeing the game via DK2. When i get time, i give it another go and see if i can tweak my setting so it plays a bit better.

I tried a a few other titles in Dolphin. Mario sunshine is really buggy and the camera get really messed up. Star Fox Assault works except that the normal view area is black, essentially making the game unplayable. Might give Geist or REmake a go next.

REmake uses prerendered environments so I don't think that would really work at all in VR.

have you tried F-zeroGX?

Runs at a playable framerate, but not the F-Zero kind of playable... felt like 20-25, with slowdown. And the HUD was awkwardly floating in front of me. But it essentially works, you can play it in VR with headtracking, and it's cool to be there on a futuristic track. Some more optimization is needed (I have a 780 and a 4770 so I might be able to squeeze out some more frames even with this version). Also needs higher res, the crowd of cars ahead of you becomes a mass of pixels. F Zero VR could be great... eventually.

I also played RE4... I seemed to have two layers of HUD floating around in front of me, and it ran much worse than Metroid, but it's nice to walk around the wilderness and feel the foliage around you. Not comfortably playable but the appeal is obvious, this game will be great in VR (especially with that GAFfers's mindblowing texture pack).

The "codec" cutscenes with Hunnigan are hilarious. If you lean forward, you can put your head right through the window their heads are in and go "inside the machine" with them standing side by side. It's a 2D texture with their 3D models standing behind it. Such a goofy setup in VR.

I thought about that but was still curious what would happen. Im thinking best case scenario, you get a weird 3d separation of the poly characters against the static backgrounds.

it would look ridiculous and awful.

Basically, it would be 3d models hovering in front of a large flat wall.

Hey guys. Pretend I've been out of the VR game for about... six weeks. What have I missed? Last big thing I was tapped into was HL2's launch. I've got my updated UE4.4.1 with native rift support and a new build of my game compiled to test when I get home, but yeah... been way out of the loop, but I'm back now with a much quicker PC (still running an HD7970 as the GPU for now, at least until Nvidia launch their new cards).

I see I have a new version of the Oculus software to install... but yeah, what games/demos/etc should I jump on?

I've ripped Wind Waker, F-Zero and RE4 disc 1 so far. I have Mario, Resident Evil Code Veronica, Killer 7, and a couple of other games on my shelf still (like Ikaruga, which could be interesting). I don't still have the Primes though. Is the HUD attached to the camera, or characters like it is in WW and RE4? I haven't tried F-Zero yet because it ran like shit on my old CPU.
