Black Knight 2000 in Pinball Arcade VR

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYMQfNR3KAw&feature=youtu.be

This game benefits so much from VR. Whether it's being able to see things going on in the backglass in your peripheral vision in games like Cirqus Voltaire, or whether it's being able to more easily focus in on different parts of multi level tables like Black Knight 2000, positional tracking is *huge*.

I hope it gets updated so you can change where you want to be relative to your DK2 camera (it needs to be level with your head pointing right at it to get a good position, and that's not normally where I have my camera), but one of my absolute favorite games now has a new way to play and it's absolutely the best way to play.

Have you managed to get this to work, i click on the Launcher.exe and it give me the message...

Local PinballArcade.exe on you local system and drag it onto the Launcher

I have tried this but it doesnt work, any ideas?

I couldn't get the drag to work either, but I did get it to work from the command line, oddly. I copied the launcher into my game's directory, opened a command prompt, and did "launcher.exe pinballarcade.exe" or something like that.

How is GRID Autosport's wheel support? Does it work great with the Logitech G27?
It will work, Codemasters games support all the popular wheels.

Whether it's 'great' depends on your perspective. Like all their other titles, there is no true 900 degree steering implementation. You can mess with saturation and linearity all you like, but it doesn't really achieve anything. I'd recommend just setting it to 270 in the driver, as it seems to be designed around that.

Drag to launch works for me. I did it by making a shortcut to the launcher.exe in the pinball arcade folder, and I just drop the exe on the shortcut. This was using extended mode with the rift set as the secondary display, and using the regular pinball arcade configuration program to set the game to load on the rift screen.

I disabled SLI, if that's a thing you had, because 1: it was giving me problems, 2: you don't need SLI to run this game maxed out and 3: SLI isn't advised (yet) for VR.

Ah. Yeah, I wouldn't call that great. I'll probably wait for a deal or a price drop then.

Hey, is there any word on Assetta Corsa getting DK2 support? It was amazing as hell on the DK1.

Yeah that worked!

Alternatively, you can copy the 2 files form the VR PinballVRcade program to your PinballArcade folder and creat a shortcut for Launcher.exe and then edit the properties and change the target..

PinballArcade\Launcher.exe pinballarcade.exe

Enjoy! It's such a great way to play the game.

The lack of camera reset in Pinball Arcade is the only real killer for me. My camera is mounted above me, looking down.

Maybe I should grab the source and get my hands dirty.

That and not being able to see the table physically 'shake' when you tilt.

Also be awesome if they could hack in another environment that was an arcade with pinball machine beside you

Can't wait to try Alien: Isolation tonight. Any tips re: configuration? I remember reading I should disable reflections and maybe AO.

I have now been waiting 13 weeks for my shipment email. How much longer???

(Sent support ticket 1 week ago)

Yikes....

I've been waiting since the end of August, so that'd be around 7-8 weeks. I love the concept of the Oculus Rift, but seriously, what's the deal with the distribution? I sent a ticket asking and all they said was "We checked your order. It's all good, please wait." And I asked them how long it would take more or less to have the next batch ready.

I don't care about waiting, but without knowing whether it will take 2 weeks or 2 months kind of sucks, and they don't seem to be very supportive when you ask them anything regarding that.

After answering (took nearly 72 hours), they sent me another email asking me to review their support and saying they pride themselves on their helpful support. Seriously...?

Mine just changed to Processing after purchasing on the 23rd August from the UK.
I purchased it on the 24th of August. Let's see how long it takes! Fingers crossed :P

Yea knowing a date would definitely help. I don't mind waiting but right now I feel like it may never come.

Aww yiss, getting my hands on one of these bad boys today since the Computer Science school has it available to rent. The box is a lot smaller than I expected tbh.

I've just received mine (Ordered mid July). ! Too bad i must go to work though.

I'm so excited, but i'm not up to date with all the demos and things recently added. Once i've properly setuped it where do i start ? Keep in mind this is my very first VR experience.

In terms of gaming/oculus experience Elite seems amazing but i will buy it in november. So what are the demos that seem important to you in the beginning ?

I've just started with the Demo Scene recommended in the Quick Start Quide - go to Oculus Configuration Utility, make sure the Rift is connected and the blue light's on, then you'll be able to look around a desk with a lamp and a deck of cards etc on it.

Topic: How can I do this? (play console games on rift)

I want to plug my ps4/ps3/xbox one into my pc (some how), "view" the running console game through some sort of window/player application running on my pc, open that viewer application in some sort of virtual desktop application, run that virtual desktop application on the rift "monitor"

What would I need in order to achieve this? I don't care about the quality of the experience, just want to be able to do it.

The way you have described it is the way to do it. You'll need a PC video capture card which will show you a live feed.

W-what? I don't think that'd be possible at all.

Closes you can get to that is wait for emulators for PS4 in some... many years, if that even happens at all, which I hardly doubt. Unless I'm missing something about your post, anyway.

This will induce so much latency, though. And in the process, it won't have any headtracking what so ever. It just becomes a big TV screen.

Question - I just got my OR and I was wondering if it is an issue with 3 displays? I had to order an active mDP to HDMI adapter for my R290X but was wondering if anyone else has a 3 display setup.

I realize that. I guess the big question is if I could see the game feed in 1080p via some player application

You know, I've been wanting to do this with my 3DS capture board and I had no success. I don't think there's a VR player yet that supports this. While LiveView Rift apparently has support for webcam streams or sth, I never got it working.

grid autosport patch is out, anyone tried it?

Yeah, I just have.

.. The menus aren't in 3d. I just clicked until I started a race and it was in VR
.. No steering wheel or arm visuals, and the speedo moves with your head.
.. No CA fix
.. Didn't try it with the wheel, just the controller and it played really well and give a great sensation of speed (I actually beat a level I was stuck on playing with the wheel)
.. I deleted the two hardware settings file in the grid autosport folder in my documents, I also paused oculus services first (not sure if these needed to be done or not)

Great VR experience, nearly up there with LFS if it wasn't for the damn menus being messed up and unreadable in VR.

Video incoming.

Not sure why you're seeing different things to me wickfut - I get steering and arms, and there is definitely aberration correction...

I see. Because I deleted the two hardware settings files it probably done a re-calibration and put my two 970s as "low" in the game settings or something. The low setting probably removes all the arms and wheel.

I'll try it again running on ultra.

thanks

Great stuff. I'm actually fairly impressed with the amount of work they put into it. I'm not sure I was expecting that. The game has limitations, but we already knew that.

How's the static speedo UI? It's not elegant, but is it functional?

I too thought well why not just use F1 2014, but this probably makes for a better covert test bed. Come Spring, bust out a polished version on the new engine, and have it as a bonafide back-of-the-box feature on 2015.

It'll sell some games, and it will sell some Rifts as well.

It works fine, and being mostly made of thin white lines it's not that distracting, but it's definitely not a good solution. But it's essential at the moment for GRID, because the actual interiors are lifeless and have no working instruments - either blacked out entirely or made of a very low res texture. The Atom is one of the more detailed examples.

Check out this lovely 1M interior:

But the way LFS does it, with floating elements in 3D space that stay fixed to the car movement/orientation is much better, and I hope iRacing does it like this too. Their DK1 HUD implementation was weird, more annoying than GRID's.

The thing that struck me most was how VR really highlights the weird handling. I think with presence, there could be no place for this kind of semi-realistic game in VR, as it feels really odd, a different feeling to motion sickness caused by performance problems or poor implementation. GRID's VR is very solid, I get no motion sickness, but I feel really weird driving these cars which aren't behaving anything like they should.

I think games might need to handle at least at a Forza/GT level of realism to make sense in VR, otherwise they have to go very clearly in the other direction, like a Need For Speed (the more arcadey than Shift titles), or even further like F-Zero or Mario Kart. GRID is an uncomfortable halfway house for me, but then I felt that without VR too, so it might not bother a fan of the series.

Guys just a quick question. I think i've setup my rift well with B lenses cause i'm near sighted. But it is normal that when i move my eyes to check to the bottom or side all is blurry ?

Ok thanks.

So i did not manage to have a single demo work in direct mode, the sdk demo works but judder everywhere, it worls perfectly in extended mode though.

Titans of space is great experience but it is not very smooth for me (judder , and some hicups). Somebody managed to have some demo working flawlessly ? (direct or extended mode)

My 770 GTX has died two days ago and it will take at least one week to have a replacement so a firend lent me a 650 Ti boost. Maybe it's too weak, dunno.

You know, when I download something like Windlands, I expect the game to run smoothly at 60 FPS. I know my GTX 760 isn't top of the line, or anything, but Windlands does NOT appear to be a very demanding game.

But when I put on the DK2, I get extreme lag and judder. I'm not sure if it's the actual framerate or not (not sure how to check within the app). The Oculus World demo is fine.

I haven't messed around too much with the DK2, but I've heard reports of this being a problem. If this is a global thing, how are you guys even managing to play these demos? It's awful. If it isn't global, any ideas on how to fix it?

Edit: Neeeeeever mind. Apparently I had to switch Windows 7 Desktop Appearance to Basic Mode? What the hell...

Double-Edit: Windlands is awesome, but even with my super VR legs I had to take it off after thirty minutes. Some of those high ledges, man....hoo boy.

It's really surprising the amount of things that can cause judder issues. In my experience, simply having multiple monitors alongside the Rift or even having one monitor running at 120hz can be the culprit.

I wanted to say Windlands is one of the most amazing videogame experiences i've had in my life.

.

Windlands was revolutionary for me. Simply amazing.

I just tried Alien Isolation. Nope. I didn't even get to see the Alien. It was just too intense. It's late, and everyone is asleep in my dark house. I'll try again tomorrow during the day.

So I was lucky enough to (along with several other people) get a chance to talk with Michael Abrash and a few other Oculus people recently. I was blown away by how formidably intelligent they are. Like, I've encountered lots of people who are experts in one specific research area, but VR technology involves so many different fields (graphics, computer vision, robotics, software engineering, physics, biology, perceptual psychology, etc), and these guys are fluent in all of these different areas. There's something magnetic about people who are willing to think about all sorts of different hard problems, and have confidence that they'll be able to tackle them.

They also have a really strong belief in the potential of VR. That sounds like an obvious statement, but it's interesting hearing what kind of use cases they envision. During a question and answer session, Michael Abrash said he envisions people using VR whenever they would be looking at a screen--for instance, even when they're working on the computer. I can't personally see right now why I would benefit from using a VR headset instead of just looking at my monitor at work, but maybe virtual workspaces will take off once the technology is there.

It's certainly interesting that VR amplifies the longstanding weirdness of racing games with realistic cars and environments, but otherworldly physics. I'll be interested in seeing if, as you say, a fan of that sub-genre has the same sort of reaction, or if they just carry on business as usual.

Hmmm, have you tried GRID 2? How's it feel with the Rift?
