Oculus Rift DK2 Thread

Somebody managed to have some demo working flawlessly ? (direct or extended mode)

If this is a global thing, how are you guys even managing to play these demos? It's awful. If it isn't global, any ideas on how to fix it?

My DK2 hasn't arrived yet, but my friend told me Bilago's VR Game Manager has been essential for him. It lets you tweak all the things that can effect performance til you find a solution that works perfectly, and saves those working settings for each individual game.

Hmmm, have you tried GRID 2? How's it feel with the Rift?
I don't have GRID 2 on PC, although I've played some on PS3. I believe GRID 2 only has unofficial Rift support via VorpX or Vireio, so I doubt it would be as good as Autosport's proper implementation. It also doesn't have a cockpit view (although I think that has been enabled in the PC version via a mod).

I think GRID 2 is more 'arcade' in presentation than Autosport, but the handling has very similar characteristics. But perhaps it goes far enough to make me think 'yeah, this is just a bit of fun', rather than 'what the hell am I doing'.

I'll try Autosport again with a gamepad from some other camera angles - I have a feeling it might be more awesome in VR this way.

The thing that struck me most was how VR really highlights the weird handling.

Autosport VR feels like this..

Ok it seems the judder was coming from aero...

Now i'm blown away by the experience, truly amazing. Just a question though, anyone noticed a vertical bar appearing when turning head (it seems like where the bar pass the graphics become less blurry). Is it a limitation of my graphic card ?

I imagine you're seeing a vertical screen tear - the Note 3 panel is portrait so tearing appears vertically... I'm not sure why it would be blurry on one side of it though.

try all this:

1. disable all traditional monitors but one
2. if in Extended mode make the Rift your primary monitor and make sure it's running at 75hz
3. make your desktop monitor run at 60hz

Make sure you can run the config tool's desktop demo under these conditions. It should be perfectly smooth.

One thing I figured out on my configuration (3 monitors on a Radeon Card) You have to have an active adapter for the extra displays. Do not plug in the Rift in one of the active adapters it will cause all sorts of strange anomalies. I had tearing and everything looked like it had crawling edges.

It helps, but maybe it's me. In Windlands for instance, i've managed to get rid of the tearing but i've got some juddering, when i had the tearing i was running at 74/75 fps and when i had the juddering and no tearing i was at 50. So I wonder if the rift is always considered primary and if the Vsync is forced onto it.

Edit : Ok i'm a moron. I was setting primary screen for the rift in window panel but you have to do it in nvidia/amd pannel, so no tearing because of vsync but less fps so please lord give me back my 770 or bring me a 980 thanks.
Edit 2 : I relaunched windlands with the same settings and tearing appeared again... hmmm but i still think it's a vsync issues starting some times and some times not. Do some of you managed to launch something in direct mode other than the desk demo ?

Nope, it was a modification of Papa Lazarou of League of Gentlemen fame... long story. I'd quite like to change it actually.

A mod will change your name if you ask nicely. I had mine changed several years ago. I quite like Betta Lines. You should go with that. Keep your avatar however so at least you'll be recognizable!

So I see that we've got a game launcher for VR games... But is there a game launcher IN vr yet? I'd love to have something where I can yoink out my other two monitor cables (to get around any and all extended monitor hiccups) and just hit Win+# to launch and it be usable to launch games from.

Virtual Desktop might be closer to what you're looking for. It mirrors a primary monitor, so you still need another monitor hooked up, but you can view your desktop and launch games directly from the Rift. I like it a lot.

I think I have that installed... Does it play well with launching Rift games? I think I remember there being some hiccups when I tried it... Though I probably didnt give it a fair shake. But thank you for the recommendation, I'll definitely try it out!

I do remember thinking how super sweet it would be, if you could have it as a virtual 3D monitor -- where you can have a game run in stereoscopic 3D in that virtual desktop. Is it to that point yet? Or does it not work with those/with full screen games/like that at all?

Argh... August 24th from Japan, nothing at all.

And seeing my comment above, it seriously makes me wonder what's the detail with this company. Their product seems to be amazing, but the way they are doing all the shipping and everything is just terrible.
The same sort of communication gaps happened with the first devkit if I recall correctly. My order was one one of the shipments that got held up in customs for like, months.

Hold up in customs sucks a lot indeed, but here the stuff isn't even being sent and other people that ordered later seems to be getting their stuff sent earlier. You'd think they would send it to you if you've paid (at least $50 beforehand) and waiting to pay the rest.

The justification is presumably different regions.

However, this is as before -- there may well be justifications, but it would be nice to have support / announcements / whatever so people have an idea what is going on behind the scenes. People thought that the shipping would be better with Facebook support, and initially it presumably was, but it sounds like there is some mysterious stuff happening again with 2-3 people asking in here about shipments.

I guess they do indeed have some reasons to send stuff earlier to certain regions. But still.. being in Japan, that sounds terrible for me then (seeing how this country is always 2nd-tier or even worse).

Hopefully everybody here gets it soon!

It's been updated pretty regularly - I'd say that there aren't too many glitches left. He recently added the ability to add arguments to the game launcher (for instance, -force-d3d11) so that helps to fix a lot of the Rift game problems I've been having.

You can run games in full-screen windowed mode, but I don't think they can run in stereoscopic 3D. That said, playing Diablo III on a curved screen that fills my entire field of vision is still pretty sweet!

Oh man if he added full screen and stereoscopic I dont think Id ever play games any other way. Can I hook up a capture card and play that way? Is there any input lag playing that way?

For a while EU was lagging about a month behind NA in shipments. The last week or two shipments have been focused entirely in EU, pushing them ahead on orders made up until around August 28th. I'm sure soon EU shipments will stop, and NA shipments will catch up and step ahead again. Everywhere else seems to be sporadic unfortunately.

Regardless of how efficient the system is, it would be nice if they were more vocal about it so people didn't have to gather data to figure out what's happening. This site will give you an idea of where shipments are currently focused, for example. My order (UK) was made about a week after currently processing EU orders, so logically I'd expect mine to process next week, but I'm prepared for perhaps another month as shipments are focused elsewhere soon.

I used DSR with my GTX980. I wasn't able to get it working that way when I had SLI enabled, for some reason, but with a single GPU I had no problems. It makes a huge difference on how readable the DMD is.

I now have a gtx 970 but the gfeforce experience doesn't recognize the game.Is there another way to enable DSRi?

EDIT:Figured it out:it's under general in 3D setting.WOW it does make a difference in pinball arcade!

I ordered a DK2 last week, couldn't wait any longer and interested in trying to get into development. Can do ok with the assets but am beyond helpless at coding so won't go anywhere but hey why not try.

So I shouldn't expect delivery before christmas realistically then?

Also, is there a recommended graphics card to run things to a good standard in the rift? Like a 780 or R9 280 as minimum/recommended?

Ordered mine early August and it arrives tomorrow, so with demand calming down after the initial spike you'll probably get it late November.

You'll likely get it before Christmas. 2 months seems to be the current waiting time, and I have to imagine there will be less strain on shipments now that most of the summer orders are dispatched.

I have an R9 280, and it runs most of the demo's (which are relatively undemanding unity demo's) fine at 75fps. For AAA games like Alien and Elite, you might want something a bit beefier if you want higher graphical settings (I haven't tried either yet so I can't say for sure) and for future proofing. Go for a 970 or 980 if you can afford it.

I ordered on July 28th. Never got it. Wouldn't count on it.

It's the luck of the draw depending on what the shipment schedule is when you order. If you were in Europe you'd have yours by now as nearly all European July and August orders were shipped in the last fortnight. I imagine soon all American July/August orders will be dealt with too.

I wonder what happens with Asia... :(

Probably after the US, so I might have to wait a couple weeks at the very least? When I preordered they said they'd be shipping during October. I hope they keep their word.

And only a few months until we get The Addam's Family in the game! It's been a good couple of weeks for Pinball Arcade.
