Oculus Rift unboxing and article

Doom 3 is open source. If Carmack doesn't make it happen, modders will. People are already working on it, infact. In the (eventual) meantime, we have TF2 and Tuscany Villa day one, and more and more stuff coming out afterwards.

I mean, I have a VR game installed on my PC right now. I can't launch TF2 in VR, but when I try, it tells me it can't find my VR device. That's cool.

"Very few head-mounted displays have adjustable focus... none in the consumer market," says Luckey, proudly.

Wat.

I'm fairly certain Sony's HMZ-T1 does this, with sliders even. Better than the interchangeable lens crap Oculus uses. Sad to see them spouting bullshit already

I was wrong, oops.

not at all. that's just an adjustment for different inter pupillary distances. that isn't adjustable focus at all. they aren't spouting bullshit. my HMZ has no such thing.

The HMZ has IPD sliders that slide the lenses left and right. Focus would be moving the screen (or the lenses?) in and out on the Z axis. The HMZ doesn't do that, but needed it badly. It's flat out impossible to get the HMZ truly in focus for a lot of facial types.

Not sure if anyone has commented on this, or put the obvious "two and two" together...

Unfortunately, as of this writing, there’s no easy way to simulate walking around and interacting with things that you see. You can control your head, but your body is another matter... and using a standard gamepad to navigate actually gave me motion sickness after a bit. “You want to look down and be Batman, with the spine rippers on your arms... rather than controlling Batman with an abstract interface,” Mitchell admits. That’s why Oculus is spending time researching haptics, body tracking, and controllers in addition to the headgear. "We don't know what's going to be the best solution at the end of the day," Luckey says, suggesting that Oculus might not sell controllers itself, but leaving the possibility open should no other company rise to the challenge.

Sounds like Microsoft's KINECT 2 could be a solution to the above problem. If Microsoft were smart, they would either buy Occulus, or damn well make sure their KINECT team is working closely with Occulus to merge these two technologies into a fully realized virtual experience.

Interestingly, they said they have around 7,500 dev kits to ship out. My order number, if I recall correctly, was like 41546 or something...so clearly that's not directly indicative.

I should get mine late April or so!

Waiting at least a month while other people enjoy their Rift's is going to suck.

It's really not. Hopefully I get in early because I preordered on the first day.

Day one? I think you'll probably be in the first batch.

The e-mail went out to kickstarter backers. 7500 is likely the number of kickstarter kits they need to ship, but there are still a few thousand more to ship after those.

I'm not a kickstarter backer and I still got an e-mail.

Aah. The e-mail I got was from kickstarter.

Still, they've confirmed that 10k Rift's have been ordered, haven't they?

My number is riiiiiight around yours, so we should get ours around the same time. Sucks that we gotta wait an extra month ;(

I think there were at least three order number types, and the third type was the most recent preorder people, starting at 40000 or thereabouts.

I would guess that I won't get mine (post-kickstarter order a few months back?) until mid or late May, if all goes well. April would be awesome but I'm not seeing it.

i can wait another month for the future of interactive entertainment personally. its only going to start getting hard when people here have them and if the early mods, games and demos are espescially strong.

This is one of the more cooler images I've seen of the device in action.

Comparison with the HMZ...

Sony-HMD-3D-glasses.jpg

$300 x $800 and the $300 device(rift) just sound way better in almost every way.

Last thing anyone needs is microsoft taking a shit on oculus.
No frigging thanks.

I want to believe that sony is goint to launch one HMZ focus on gaming for the ps4.

I mean, they already have shown a prototype to the public (Prototype-SR) that not only had motion tracking but also augmented reality using a mounted camera.

looked/felt goofy, but this worked pretty well for head tracking.....felt like 1:1 to me for Datura.

so maybe a new hmz build for gaming will have a section of it have the same tech that the DS4 has...to make up for the Move orb.

then this could maybe make it cheaper to add headtracking...and maybe make the device more affordable.

Anything that has you standing up moving around while blinded to your surroundings is a lawsuit waiting to happen...

Those people that mention the Sony HMZ, well it sucks. I literrally have used it less than 10 hours and it has sat ever since.

What I didn't like about it, and I should have known but I guess I expected something else, was that you felt like you were in front of a very large screen say at the movies. I wanted something more engrossing, like you were IN the game. I wanted the screen to wrap around my vision so that I didn't see a screen. Does this device do that or do you still look at a screen but with head tracking?

This device does what you want. Depending on how close the lenses are to your eyes you can apparently still see a tiny bit of the screen but for the most part it covers your entire field of vision.

Its supposed to not have black edges.. not sure if that is confirmed for the development version though. Months ago I think people still saw the edge, I do hope thats fixed though.

With the HMZ its meant more for movies if it was any closer it would cut off the edge of the films which would be strange..

The HMZ would also be really disorientating for movies if it filled your entire vision with all the cuts and unnatural movements that cameras do.

You know, I was playing Minecraft today using the red/blue 3d, and it struck me how amazing that game would be on the rift. /crosses fingers.

Ordered first day as well! Come on! :)

That case it comes in is so svelte. I'm glad to be getting what will be a true collector's item if we really have a VR future ahead of us.

Glad to be getting my Razer Hydra sometime this week. Hopefully by the time my Rift arrives, I'll have a better understanding of how it can work in tandem instead of fumbling around with two new pieces of hardware tech.

Starting shipping on the 29th (subject to customs) sounds like they haven't received the bulk yet. According to them, they should have arrived back around 10th march before the factory went on a break.

And 1000-1500 units a week? The factory is supposed to manage 500 per day, so the first batch shipped over should have been around 5-6000 units. If the shipping is slow because of oculus' end, then get some temps in to label them up and ship them out. If they need to flash new firmware, isn't that something we can do?

Very disappointing. Had hoped to get mine while my family were away at Easter so I could look like an idiot in private. Now it looks like maybe May (ship towards the end of April plus international shipping to the UK)

Anyone wondering how popular such a device would be in Japan? A lot of the LovePlus-Fans would directly order one for Love Plus Oculus Rift Edition I guess.
And some Illusion-Games...

Though I think most people in Japan do not even know about the OR.

Looks as comfortable as 3D glasses, so not comfortable at all for someone with actual glasses.

The interior is completely adjustable to allow glasses to fit inside it, and the consumer version should allow for prescription adjustment of some sort so that glass aren't needed. The dev kit ships with 3 different lenses for different levels of correction.

And it has straps like ski goggles as well, so it is infinitely more comfortable than my Nvidia 3D glasses :p

I was around backer #3500, so I'll have to wait a couple of weeks... but that's fine honestly, as I expect there will be more cool stuff to try out once the first backers & partners get their hands on this :)
