Oddworld: Soulstorm - Trailer

Epic only. Shame because I wanted to play this new one.

Why not download Epic then? I mean, you don't pay anything extra?

Anyway, got it from PS Plus. Will try it out mostly because it has deep nostalgia back to PS1 demo disc.

Got the actually game on PS4 though. And of course this is the sequel.

The game's seemingly low budget is felt often, unfortunately. Bad sound mixing. Cheap looking effects. Occasional bugs. I also think some of the mechanics like throwing water to extinguish fire are unsatisfying and get tiring quick.

All of this is keeping me from getting immersed which seems like, arguably, the most important aspect of the game. I really like the premise too and found one of the early cutscenes to be quite moving and it made Abe a compelling character for me in a way I had never realized before. I am going to push on for glimpses of that but I can't say I'm wholly enjoying playing this game much at all.

I found that there was a slight delay in pressing buttons on the PS5 and you have to be spot on when opening chests. Throwing the water also never felt great and many times I thought I was aiming correctly but would miss the fire and it would take 2-3 throws just to put out a tiny section. Just little things like that make it feel unpolished.

is there dpad support?

holy shit my patience for this game is low
why is this a ps5 game?

No Dpad support. Wait until you get to the landmines... You will meet a new meaning for "infuriating".

There is no d-pad support, as those are the calls just like in the previous remake I think. Game gets far better once you're at the

Sorrow Valley

Level design is good, with lots of smart secrets. And as far as the crafting goes, I hardly craft shit and I'm quite a few hours underway. Sometimes it seems to be required to craft a smoke bomb to go undetected but so far its been rare.

Sadly the game is simply not an Abe game imo. I tried the game for 10 minutes just now. Too bright, too much stuff going on, the controls are way to flimsy, and the tone is completely off.

I really dont wanna be a downer but I really struggle to see that anyone who enjoyed the original Abe's Oddysee and Exoddus will find this a good game.

Its so wierd because I could easily see a decent game based around the same mechanics as the original become a hit today as well. But they have stripped away the pace, tone and yeah pretty much everthing. Sad.

Played the first level. Seems to be some input delay. might play a few more levels but not feeling it so far. Glad it was free

Oddworld was never about platforming challenges, it was always more about knowing how to approach a situation than the execution. Like Another World or Flashback.
I know, but it kinda stands out compared to the overall difficulty of the rest.

I already told you before and I will tell you again, that is the problem of many fans, they want an exact copy of the original games, but if you want the original game go play the original game, this game is completely new, with a new formula, another design and structure.

Games must evolve in their concepts, do new things, take risks, etc., always creating the same game over and over again is useless.

What you say about the scenarios is not true, there are caves in which you cannot see anything because of the darkness and you must use flares to illuminate.

Had the same issue with the first one so I'm gonna avoid. I saw gameplay footage from the first ten minutes and it looked awful.

I completely believe him about the controls though. Do they still not give you an option for the dpad?

The game looks perfect for me. Maybe try things to fix the brightness issue:

Personally after a few hours and around 4 missions, the controls feel identical and the input lag has been there since the very first one. It's not that agile game so it doesn't bother me. Overall I give it around 6-7 out of 10.

Finally someone is pointing it out! Thanks!

Could be as well Unity. This engine doesn't seem that great with all the spotlights are directed to Unreal Engine. But yeah I played the previous one on PS4 and you should time your input slightly before the wanted moment like when defusing mines and so. Overall it's a nice game and that input lag shouldn't be anything major.

Performance and bugs aside the "delayed" movement was part of all the games. Even Oddysse and Exoddus on PSONE.
It really bothers me that some people need to put the game in a bad light while obviously they have never played the original games.

Faced some glitches here and there, especially in the train mission when trying to enter secret rooms, it's really, really bad at that particular platforming and not well designed. Other than that I'm having a fun with it, raising the bar to 7-8/10 now.

Its funny because I play this game much more than the previous one which felt more uneven, more obscure and more trial and error to me than this one. The pacing has to be good because I played for hours non stop today. And still the only things I craft are smoke screens basically. Its barely there or i'm not far enough yet. I never used water and alcohol since the prologue levels anymore.

The game absolutely has some glitches and issues with the AI. Sometimes enemies won't ever leave their place after you went into hiding, which you can remedy by throwing something in their face but I don't think its intentional. Survivors won't always get into a locker, standing there fucking up your run. You can get out and double tap in again but sometimes you don't have time for it. Luckily checkpoints are frequent. Also this game has a nasty bug but I don't know if it still persists as I got an update, the game crashes out of rest mode every time.

But its solid. I did the level before the train and it has some great level design though i'm not sold on the coin collecting (it forces you to open everything it seems, you need x amount of coins to open some doors idk if this was from the original). I could perfect that level, but 2 guys died at the very end and I just hit a checkpoint post at the same time. Did get platinum medal for 30 rescues though. There are some well done sections in there. though those last ladder climbs with grinders swiping around can suck a dick. But getting a big group to safety is tense.

Yeah if you're a completionist it's quite challenging to solve some puzzles or "plan" an attack with your followers and what weapons do you give them.

I'm just in second level where you meet the snipers. Gonna plow through some more today.

Really hungry for the game! It is childhood all over again. :messenger_grinning:

Yeah it's really so much fun! Raising the bar to 8/10 after fininshing around 8-10 levels? Lost count. Time to dive in!

Can you still fart? I have not been able to fart as of yet. IT IS IMPORTANT! :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Sadly the "conversation" for the Abe has be revised. Now up is follow me (hold for all) and down for stay put (hold for all) and left to order them to get aggressive (more risk to get them killed with live bullets) and right for passive (more likely they get restrained when caught). I'll see if it's possible but it's been changed from the previous game which was funny back in PS1.

Noooo!

I can live with that. New 'n' Tasty still had it.
There just not enough games with a dedicated fart button. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Damn, I can already feel the game's gonna be a pain in the ass for replaying levels. Some of them are huge. I've spent 2 and a half hours in level 6 trying to lead all Mudokons to safety... and even though I ultimately achieved that I've still missed one secret area along the way. Not to mention the end of that level is a series of increasingly annoying traps.

Only 10 minutes and you come to that whole conclusion? This game is closer to what Oddworld Inhabitants wanted for Abe after the original game. It was always supposed to grow in scale.

The game is not nonstop action. They just chose that for the opening moments presentation.

It really seems a bit unfinished and in need of polish. It's a fun game, but even simple things like deactivating a mine are a pain in the ass. I'm standing next to one right now and can't turn it off. The button doesn't even register, so I can't even blow myself up if I wanted to.

Game is great so far (level 7)... if anything... levels are quite long, some of them over 1h long.

It is a solid game.

It is nowhere near the level of Exodus of course but I'm having a great time esp after the first 3 levels.

It needs serious polishing though. One or two patches were released already and that's reassuring.

I may end up getting the physical edition actually if they have improved the game by then.

Bars platforming is totally broken and needs to be patched ASAP!

I take back everything I said about the platforming sections being too simple. The end of level 6 was really challenging. I've now finished the train level and using the monkey bars to reach some of the secret areas was even tougher.

And yeah, using the monkey bars still needs to be improved. Sometimes it connects, sometimes it doesn't even if the jump trajectory looks the same in both attempts.
