Historical characters aren't allowed, which rules out Samanosuke and Ieyasu.

Samanosuke is a fictional characters as far as I'm aware. I don't think his "historical" nature is what makes him off limits anyway so much as the fact that it's Takeshi Kaneshiro's likeness. Tokugawa Ieyasu is a real historical figure, so I don't see him being a problem so long as they didn't use an actor's likeness as the basis for his design.

Reasons:
For the Marvel side, I want Gambit because MvC3 lacks a staff fighter. Daredevil could also do this, but Gambit also has those exploding cards which fits the gameplay style better. Mystique is there because the game has no ditto-fighter. Yeah, it's a gimmick choice, but letting Mystique transform into the various characters and use their moves would be awesome. RAM becomes a concern, though. My reason for Nick Fury is simple: Samuel Motherfuckin' Jackson. What? You know they'd use the movie version of him with the Avengers movie coming up. Don't tell me he wouldn't be awesome to have in the game.

Capcom side, I want Roll back for two reasons. Firstly: her theme song. Secondly: This. Saki Omokane is a pure gameplay want. I liked her in TvC, and I want her back for DLC in UMvC3. Her ability to set up a wall of damage made her tricky to get close to, plus she could have an unblockable Hyper Shot stored for as long as she needed to. With Mega Man X I'll be honest, I don't really want to play him, I'm just rooting for him in the hopes of Capcom doing an X vs. Zero easter egg. As in when they fight, their boss music kicks in. Or just let it be X's music.

Nina could easily be swapped with Ryu (Breath of Fire), but I went with Nina because 1) Wings might add a few more gameplay options than just a generic swordsman, 2) Confusing Ryu (Street Fighter) with Ryu (Breath of Fire) in discussions and in-game voicing, and 3) Adds another female to the roster.

Really though, Ryu would be fine too.
