Official Iwata Keynote Thread

alright, i figure, we're gonna need one. so might as well.

besides, im expecting things to start trickling out way later tonight anyways.

In the Nintendo keynote, entitled "The Heart of a Gamer," Iwata will assess where the games business stands today, predict how it will develop over the next several years, and the manner in which it will help decide future Nintendo hardware and software development.

While interactive entertainment differs from other entertainment media by allowing players to help write the narrative and outcome of their adventures, it mimics other media by relying on emotional response, running the full range from comedy to fear, empathy to revenge. Mr. Iwata will explain how the ability to enhance those emotions was the strategic basis for the development of the wildly popular Nintendo DS, and how it will also play a major role in the nature of Nintendo's next console, code-named Revolution.

The Heart of a Gamer keynote is scheduled for Thursday, March 10, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Hell, he'll probably just dust off his "Mega-Game" Powerpoint presentation one more time. And talk about how sequels are killing the industry, and how innovation and bringing new players to gaming is the key. Blah, blah, blah. Then he'll follow that by firing up a video of some franchise in its sixth or seventh iteration.

I am so pumped up about this speech. I will be at work, and fortunately I have internet. Will be refreshing GAF non-stop (and clicking ads).

First he'll be talking about how the industry is suffering and how things aren't looking to great, in which you can replace every instance of "industry" with "nintendo" and you'll get a more accurate reality.

He'll talk a little about the Revolution and people will be dissappointed but at E3, when they show it off, it will make sense.

He'll show the DS online but I have a feeling that it will be cripple in some form.

He'll show off Zelda and people will clap and chear because Nintendo didn't decide at the last minute to go back to Celshading.

He will show off Animal Crossing DS (Online), Metroid Pinball and another new DS games that will actually look great.

This is gonna be torn apart, sentence by sentence.

The prophet has spoken.

EDIT: Oh, and a huge overuse of :lol with unfunny "jokes."

I think Iwata will talk about the Heart of the Gamer and then perform a metaphysical transformation into a giant glowing ball of energy and fly into the heavens...and then the credits will roll

Nintendo does have a point concerning games becoming overly complex and targeting young adult males. Back in my day you'd see your friend's 50 year-old mom playing Super Mario or Dr. Mario everyday.

Mario 128 Box. MAKE IT SO.

Maybe the Revolution will employ the actual beating heart of a gamer.

Stunned onlookers will run from the room as Iwata laughs maniacally.

People criticize Iwata like he's nuts for saying "the industry is doomed." He's not nuts, he's just focused on Japan, where, believe it or not, Halo and Madden don't mean shit.

So when criticizing, remember...he's right in some context, just not America's.

This thread is null and void till Link shows up in updated form. I'm tempted to ditch work now

If Advance Wars DS does indeed go online I will be beyond hyped up. It would practically be a lock-in contender for game of the year with that. Granted it has 4+ player matches and communication between players of course.

Hey, until he delivers another speech, I have to go with the numbers. He's said the same thing the last five times he's appeared in front of a large crowd of journalists. I don't think anyone would begrudge him if he switched it up a little. The Japanese market will always be important because it's the cradle of the industry, but it's becoming more irrelevant by the day.

Now THIS is what being sick is all about. It's funny how I always manage to be sick on big "Nintendo news" days. (But really... I am sick... going to get tested for mono tomorrow =()

Speaking of switching it up a little, I think it'd be great if blanket statements like this would come with a little more forward thinking than looking at monthly NPDs. The fact remains that two of the three major console manufacturers are based in Japan, and while the market there is slumping (which is by no means permanent), key franchises still have firm, Japanese roots.

Could you imagine sitting in Starbucks with your DS headset on exchanging military tactics with your partner. I can, and it brings a smile to my face.

I agree with this statement.

Yeah, it's like, that would be the pinnacle of you NEVER GETTING LAID.

Should be good coverage everywhere. I hear IGN, GameSpot, and GameCube Advanced (Advancedmn.com) will cover the Iwata speech thoroughly.

Aw.. now I'm going to have to sift through the whole keynote just to read DS online.

Just kidding, everyone knows there will be other threads started no matter what.

:)

It'll be interesting to see how much he spills on Revolution, perhaps tying in to point #2? Reggie suggests DS online and Rev online will be linked...
